Panthers LB Davis out for season with torn ACL

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP)—The Carolina Panthers lost perhaps their most productive defensive player Monday when tests showed weakside linebacker Thomas Davis(notes) has a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee.

Davis’ season-ending injury came without getting hit in Sunday’s loss to New Orleans. He was backpedaling when stopped to plant and his knee buckled. He crumpled to the turf as Drew Brees(notes) threw a 17-yard pass to Pierre Thomas(notes) in the fourth quarter.

A serious injury was immediately feared, and it derails the speedy Davis’ most successful season in another blow for injury-plagued Carolina (3-5).

“He’s played very well. I feel bad for the young man because he’s put a lot into it,” coach John Fox said before the team revealed the extent of the injury. “He was playing at a high level. It’s unfortunate, and I feel bad for him and his family.”

Davis, a 2005 first-round pick from Georgia in his fourth season with the Panthers, ranks second on the team behind fellow linebacker Jon Beason(notes) with 69 tackles. He also had two sacks and an interception and his teammates had begun talking about him as a Pro Bowl selection.

“This defense is pretty much made for the Will linebacker to be a playmaker,” safety Chris Harris(notes) said. “Thomas, with his physical skill and ability was making plays left and right. He was having an excellent year, possibly a Pro Bowl-type year.”

Davis is the second defensive starter to be lost for the season, joining Maake Kemoeatu(notes) (torn Achilles’ tendon), who went down on the first day of training camp.

Davis missed much of training camp with a sprained medial collateral ligament in the same knee, then sat out the Buffalo game last month with a strained hamstring. The latest injury comes at an inopportune time for Davis, who will be a restricted free agent after the season.

“I feel like that if the Panthers want to bring him back they’re not going to hold that against him,” defensive tackle Damione Lewis(notes) said. “He’s really done a great job this year. This has been his best season since he’s been in the league.”

Landon Johnson(notes), who led Cincinnati in tackles three times over four seasons but has been much less productive in two seasons with Carolina, will likely move into the starting lineup. Johnson had 10 tackles filling in for Davis against the Bills.

“If I end up going in to replace TD it’s obviously big shoes to fill,” Johnson said. “I just got to go out there and practice as hard as I can.”

The Panthers did not immediately place Davis on injured reserve, which would open a roster spot for another linebacker. Reserve James Anderson(notes) can also play that position, but linebacker Na’il Diggs(notes) said it’s impossible to replace Davis.

“I haven’t seen another one like him on any team I’ve played on,” Diggs said. “Just flat out crazy talent, crazy athleticism.”

There is no way we can win football games playing scared because of our QB. We either get rid of the quarterback (Delhomme ) and/or Coach (Fox). If this was another team, they would have replaced the quarterback 3 games ago so I can’t figure out why we are still playing this guy. Jake might be a nice guy but nice don’t win football games.

This year has been plaqued by injuries and a guy whosben taking up all the cap space so that we cant get anyone good. And seriously getting brown inthe second round liek 4 picks before we choose and giving up our first rounder again. It was different last year becasue otah and stewart started but with brown I have yet to hear of him playing or even doing any good.

I say we need to find another GM really or at least stop spendign our damn first round picks every year. Withthe next draft coming up we need to get a first rounder again becasue of the fact that there is going to be a huge draft day for QB's. I am sorry delhomme has had his chance and he really hasnt recovered as of yet from teh playoff game.

Whatever, the season is lost anyway (thanks Jake)...let him get healthy and hope they can figure it out next year. They seem to like to be good one year and suck the next...this is one of those years. If they had beaten the Bills maybe it'd be a different story, but it's just...yea...let's find a way to get a first round draft pick again.

A good team can fill in the blank and keep plugging along. Unfortunatley. we don't have a good team. Face it folks. John Fox has to go and so does Delhomme. If Fox couldn't see that you have to keep scoring on the Saints to win, you'll lose. Brees will get his in every game. It's like he doesn't trust Delhomme to throw anymore and just tries to sit on the ball. Granted we do have a hella good running game but come on!! Didn't fox learn from the Dolphins/Saints game. You can't sit on the ball on these guys.
