Favre has fueled Pack-Vikes rivalry that runs deep

  • Print

MINNEAPOLIS (AP)—These Midwestern states of Wisconsin and Minnesota have much in common, including an intense dislike of each other’s football teams.

It’s more polite than the East Coast, but this is a true story: An angry Vikings fan was once arrested for trying to light a Packers backer on fire.

So when Brett Favre(notes) called off retirement for a second straight summer and did the unthinkable by signing with the Vikings, that loathing toward the NFL’s all-time leading passer formally shifted east to Wisconsin.

On Monday night, Minnesota will host Green Bay at the Metrodome in Favre’s first game against his old team.

The still-strange sight of the soon-to-be-40-year-old quarterback in purple will surely spur passion—and, perhaps, alcohol consumption—to new heights on both sides in a regular-season game for the ages.

“I want the Packers to kill him because they’re the Vikings,” said a smiling Mitch Mikkelson, a Beloit man who wore a Packers cap while eating at a sports bar in Eau Claire this week. “It’s just, he’s a Viking. Since I’ve been a kid, that’s the team that you hate. Minnesota. Yuck.”

Mikkelson had lunch at Milwaukee Burger Co., whose owners plan to burn a Favre jersey in a parking lot barrel during halftime of Monday’s game as part of a fire safety fundraiser encouraging Packers fans to get rid of their unwanted Favre memorabilia for a cause.

Julie Kolk, the bar’s manager, said she didn’t expect too many contributions due to the cost of the items. But the place is expected to be packed for the game, with fans of each team in attendance. Eau Claire is in western Wisconsin, less than two hours from the Metrodome.

Favre’s switch has been more than just hype. It’s an emotional event in an area where pro football is always a big deal.

Because they share a border, there are thousands of people in each state who either grew up on the other side or even commute to work across the Mississippi or St. Croix rivers. Minnesota was actually Packers-friendly territory before 1961, when the Vikings joined the NFL, and the rooting roots in each region run deep. Kids taunt each other at school, families feud each fall, and office break rooms are breeding grounds for those heated my-team-is-better-than-yours debates.

Greg LeVevre grew up not far from Lambeau Field. He said he still respects Favre, but can’t stand the sight of him wearing No. 4 for the enemy team.

What’s it like?

“Seeing your ex-girlfriend dating an ugly guy,” LeVevre said. “It is Packers first. It always is. The team won’t go away.”

Baby boomers remember plenty of dominant Packers teams, but for the under-40 crowd Favre is the face of the storied franchise’s mid-1990s resurrection. His risky style has been nerve-racking for fans, but his success, personality, loyalty and durability helped him become an icon in Green Bay. It’s a small, down-to-earth community, not all that different than Favre’s Mississippi home save for colder weather and the absence of southern accents.

That’s why, despite the traitorous view most Packers fans have of Favre right now, there probably won’t be all that many of his green-and-gold jerseys burned in effigy.

Steve Brudos, a native of La Crosse, Wis., now living in the Twin Cities, plans to wear his Favre jersey while he watches the game.

“The Packer one, that is,” Brudos said, in case there was any doubt.

With Aaron Rodgers(notes) emerging as a potential star quarterback, Packers fans don’t feel as badly that the team decided to move on last summer. There’s more sympathy toward general manager Ted Thompson now, and fewer Packers fans who feel he made a mistake.

Still, the loyalty to Favre runs deep. There are plenty of fans who will never forgive Thompson for refusing to let Favre come back once he changed his mind.

“I’m still a Favre fan. I always will be,” Brudos said. “It’s hard to understand for Packer fans why he would’ve gone to the Vikings. But I’m still hoping he gets 300 yards and three touchdowns.”

That would certainly help the fantasy team, wouldn’t it?

“I’ve got him as a backup, just for nostalgic purposes,” Brudos said.

The key to this game is arguably more about the Packers stopping Adrian Peterson and the Vikings applying pressure on Rodgers than how well Favre actually does throwing the ball. It’s easy to forget that with all the attention this flip-flop has received.

“I think a lot of people are going to be a little confused about what they’re rooting for,” Brudos said. “But the die-hards like myself are going to be with the Packers. He’s on the other side now.”

Welcoming Favre hasn’t been very hard for Vikings fans. They’ve been starved for a stable quarterback since Daunte Culpepper(notes) went to the Pro Bowl after the 2004 season, and even then a lot of fans didn’t trust his ability to come through in the clutch.

Favre’s addition was widely seen as the missing piece for a Super Bowl contender.

“I think they recognize that there’s something about the fella, historically, that he’s able to do this,” said Sam Howell, 53, after a lunch the other day at Hubert’s, the sports bar across the street from the Metrodome. “He’s a standout guy. He’s done a lot that other people have not been able to do.”

Including generate lots and lots of revenue.

Just ask Isaac Lenz, the sales manager at Sconnie Nation, a T-shirt company founded by University of Wisconsin students in their Madison dorm room. Lenz and his co-workers designed the popular “We’ll never forget you, Brent” shirt that many Packers fans have picked up to help soothe their anger after Favre’s arrival in Minnesota.

“Absolutely could not imagine that four or five years ago,” Lenz said. “We joke that Brett Favre going to the Vikings is the best thing that could have happened to us.”

Associated Press Writers Robert Imrie in Eau Claire, Wis., and Jeff Baenen in Minneapolis and AP Sports Writer Chris Jenkins in Green Bay, Wis., contributed to this report.

Oh well.... The Diva Queen led his other queenies to victory. IF they get to the post season they will have one of the worst QB's in post season history attempting to lead them. Look it up on the cold hard football facts site. Bretty hasn't done anything in the past 12 years and the teams he was on made it to post-season on a regular basis. When the chips were down #4 knew where to throw the ball..... To the other team.

I have been a Favre fan since my college days at USM. I watched him in Bowl games and I lived in WI and went to Packer games for 20 years. He is the best thats ever been and I will cheer for him against the Pack tonight because he deserves to kick thier butt. Then I will continue to root for the pack for the rest of the season except maybe for a certain night upcoming at Lambeau Field. Go on Brett show them you still have some in the tank!

Years from now we all will be able to tell our grandchildren and their children where we were on the night of the first Favre-Packer game. They will stare wide-eyed with excitement. Then some in the group will ask: Who was Favre? And why did he play alone? The answer: "He was the team," or "I can't remember who else was there." Those will be good times. I look forward to it.

Typical Queen fan response.... If the Vikes win... it's because the Pack sucks!
If the Pack wins... it is because FAVRE let his ego get in the way?
90% of Viking fans know 10% about football.
    GO PACK GO.
Favre is the biggest LIAR in football history.

As a Wisconsinite, twice transplanted Minnesotan I am feeling different on the day of the big contest. I think Favre has been great for all these seasons entertaining me and other fans. I have always wished him the best, and support the continual growth of the packers. I had no wish for tonight other than a good game. But NOW with all this continued Favre hate, and the press just continuing to stir the pot. I hope the Vikings kick the Packers clean out of the Humphery dome. I hope Brett and The Vikings win hugh and shut these cheese for brians packer whatevers up for good. And then, in thier frustration they can hole up all winter and cry about the champion that got away. GO VIKINGS, GO BRETT, 4 everwherever.

    Go Vikes!!!
The only way they lose is if Favre lets his EGO take over & he throws multiple INT's!!!
Oh, and hang onto the rock AD (that the nickname for Peterson btw - not AP, it stands for All Day - as in give me the ball All Day)!!!

The Packers never had a team like the Vikings have! Never! I think the Niners game really helped the Vikings prepare for this game! 3-4 and very tough! The Game is at home in the dome! Even with AP and Favre getting hurt, Taylor,Harven and TJ can beat the Packers. The Packers line will not handle Minnesota's pass rush! If the Vikings O-Line has a good game its all over. No turn overs AP and Favre please! 24-10 Minn!

TC VIKINGS 51 DO you even watch FOOT BALL, you must be pissed a lot cuz Favre is not the first nor will he be the last packer on the vikings roster. I have been a Viking fan since 1983 when I moved here from Oklahoma. I am a True Viking Fanatic I love the vikings win or lose. I agree with you T-Jack should be the Man but at same time what he is learning and has learned from Favre is emense. So deal with it ps by the way I have been living in Wi for the last 5 years. the only thing that STINKS here are the Viking fans that bailed out on the vikings because of one MAN. let the GAME BEGIN. ROCK ON VIKINGS

does Wisconsin still field a team?
Remember Reggie White from Philly, yes I said the Eagles. Kind of a lack of consistancy wouldn't you say when it comes to Favre.

Matt #17 made a valid point. Favre's great years with the Pack has much to do with a great line. Good RBs and WRs. Not to mention some great Ds. The Pack owe him nothing and management was more than patient with him for three seasons. He knows he is getting too old to compete an entire season with good young QBs. He will have some great plays but as the season wears on, he will show that he is 40 years old. You watch, the Vikes will pick a good QB in the draft this year and Favre will fade away. Time does it to all the greats and Favre is no exception.

wow, j_will_28, you're such a huge fan you can't even spell his name right: it's Favre, not Farve.

And for the record, I hope the Packers destroy the Vikes tomorrow. With Aaron Rodgers, who needs this guy? I do feel sad for him, because his body isn't what it was 15-20 years ago, and he can't make the same great plays, even though he still has the same love for the game, but being an idiot about retiring like he did was pathetic. He should be on the Packer sidelines, as an assistant coach, not trying to recapture lost glory with his old team's arch-rival.

That said, I can't wait to start counting his interceptions. And Rodgers is a good quarterback, and a good guy. If the team can pull themselves together and get their ducks in a row, they have a shot at a pretty good season this year.

    Packers FTW.

Hey TC VIKINGS 51, I've lived in Wi and MN and MN is by far the armpit. Throw in the fair-weathered Queeie fans and I'd rather route for the Lions than the San Antonio,,,er, Los Angeles...no wait ... The Whatever Vikings. What a crappy franchise. Hell, even Fran Tarkneton even knows that Favre is making a mistake... and you'll just how big tomorrow night. Are you going to kiss Favre's rear when he throws 6 picks in a game? You can have our leftovers...enjoy! Go PACK!

I've been a viking fan for more than 40 years lived in mankato, and the idea of a packer on the viking roster pisses me off. The vikings would have been just fine with rosenfals and jackson, and i think they will prove it in the playoffs when farve is unable too play. I've been too wisconsin many times too git totally wasted otherwise you realize your in the nations armpit. I can't blame farve for wanting too escape that.

It looks like three writers contributed to this article, but it reads like a "let's let Packer fans rag on Minnesota" piece without showing the depths of the rivalry from both sides. Seems to me like they let an opportunity to do a real comprehensive piece slide right through their biased little fingers. Too bad. To an unbiased reader who wouldn't know about this rivalry or wouldn't care, it mostly reads like Packer fans are immature and unsportsmanlike. I don't disagree with that sentiment, but still...if you're going to write about the rivalry, do a little more work on both sides. Earn that paycheck.
