Kampman: Late concussion ID not team’s fault

  • Print

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP)—Linebacker Aaron Kampman(notes) does not blame the Green Bay Packers’ coaches and medical staff for him playing most of Sunday’s game with a head injury.

Kampman took a blow to his head on the fourth play of Green Bay’s loss at Tampa Bay, but played into the fourth quarter before he told coaches he wasn’t OK and was taken out of the game.

“They didn’t know what was going on,” Kampman said Wednesday. “They need to be completely absolved. And I didn’t really know what was going on. Sometimes you just play. You keep playing. And you don’t really know what’s going on. But it got to a point where I was having some symptoms where I knew I was probably going to jeopardize the team, so I knew to come out.”

Kampman said it’s a player’s responsibility to recognize when he has had a significant head injury, but doing so can be difficult because they aren’t thinking straight.

Kampman, who is in his eighth NFL season, said he had “a couple” concussions in his rookie year and possibly another one in his second season. Amid increasing awareness about the potential effects of football-related head injuries, Kampman acknowledged that a concussion is cause for concern.

“It can be,” Kampman said. “But I’ve been through this before, and as long as you’re smart, make sure you’re symptom-free, that’s the main thing.”

Kampman said he was feeling better Wednesday, but he has not yet received medical clearance to return to practice and it’s not certain that he’ll recover in time to face Dallas.

“(I) don’t know yet,” Kampman said. “It’s not like, ‘Oh, my finger’s sore.’ It’s not like that. It’s a little different. No way to really check all that stuff in there.”

Kampman’s primary replacement, Brady Poppinga(notes), sat out Wednesday’s practice with a quadriceps injury.

Offensive lineman Allen Barbre(notes) also has a concussion and was listed as limited in Wednesday’s practice, but Packers coach Mike McCarthy said Barbre was closer to getting back on the field than Kampman.

tom b @ 170, U definitly must not know football culture! It is the SUPERBOWL that defines standards, why do you think its called the LOMBARDI TROPHY? Cause of the Mans intence standards. How is excellence shown in field? By the TRACK RECORD, so you can say thats the past about the SUPERBOWL WINS by the PACKERS....OOOO then you got to say about the VIKEES PAST also which is far from glorious unless, its based on what VIKEE FANS consider glorious, a DIVISION win. Don't worry in time U will be eating CHEESE & saying please may I have some more?..................

tampa blows and the only way they can win is by taking out rodgers, he doesnt have too many sacks left in him and one of those times hes going down hard. Thats when the bucs can capitalize and take the game when the packers are confused and emotional about their non-legendary qb going down. GB should dominate yet another winless team lmao, gl both of you

pauline look at the teams tho that he has great ratings against, like the game today against the bucs? come on TB might as well just forfeit because they arent going to win, GB could knee every possession and still win so I wouldnt talk much about passer rating when you have played literally all the worst teams possible in the nfl. Same applies to anyone bragging anything for any team who played any of these debacle teams.

Hey all you Farve and Vikings fans. ESPN announcer said it best today. Farve is not God and what makes him successful at this time is the team he is on.. Vikings are a good team. But if you put throw Rodgers in as QB for the Vikings they would have the same 7-1 record. Rodgers has the best QB rating in the NFL at this time.... So there...... The Packers just need a permanent O-Line not the shuffling around that is happening, McCarthy and TT have to go!!

Tom b dont you know by now what a team does in the season doesnt matter unless they win the "big" game? If a team wins every game 60-0 and loses the superbowl they are losers.
I definetly will hold onto the 12 titles. And I was around for 4 of them. Maybe by time your great great great great great grandkids grow up the vikings will one. Have to go polish my Packers championship trophy case now. will take hours. ta ta

to post #153--- I don't care one way or the other about Farve; but he didn't suck in NY until he got hurt. Take a look at his stats! He was doing very well- and then --- not so well. He was and still is a talented qb.

Bluemns Keep holding on to thoses 12 titles you have. I'm sure you where around for all of them!! You want to call the Vikings nobody, well that's fine. A nobody beat your Pakers twice this year. Deal with it. Your pack isn't going anywhere this year!!

Are you Favre fans that ignorant, or just stupid? Just remember 2006. Without a good running threat or a decent O-line, Favre was - to quote Bill Walton - "Horrrrrible". Favre is at his best when he doesn't have to THINK he has to win it himself. If he was still with the Packers, he would be terrible, injured, and still can't decide if he wants to retire or not. Now look at Aaron Rodgers. He's #1 in pass efficiency, with a bad O-line(leads the league in giving up sacks), and not a good running threat. The Vikings has the single most-dangerous player in the backfield in AP.

Saw a comment that said the Packers felt they "beat themselves both games against the Vikings". Well, I think Mr. Favre might just have cause to disagree! Congrats Favre on proving what we all know--T.T. wanted his boy-toy and you had to go. Now he pays for his selfish choice.

As much as I like to see Tampa win, it isn't going to happen (I hope not, but it is). They got rid of all their top-of-line players, starting a rookie QB (their third this year, omg) and a rookie head coach who seems like he doesn't have an answer. WTFO!!!! I don't like Green Bay but they look a lot better than Tampa. Plus, to make matters worse for Tampa they're going to wear good ole Buco Bruce. OUCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

tom b. If the vikings dont win the big game (and they wont) they are a nobody, something they are used to. GB is titletown, it is fact that on one can take away and we are proud as you would be if your team had ever won even 1 championship! You are just plain jealous. Remember.... Packer fans always have the last laugh!!!! ha ha ha lol

Ha Ha haHa!!!! The Pack is banged up from getting their asses kicked by the Vikings!!! I don't care who was The QB was on Vikings. They would have won both games anyway. Face the facts. THE PACKER ARE NOT A GOOD TEAM!!!!!!! For all you packer fans who love to come on Vikings message boards and dump on them for being 0-4 in the superbowl, Well keep living in the past. If you'd living in the today right now moments, you'd probbly go jump off a bridge. The Pack is average at best, when the Vikings are one of the best!!! To all the good packer fans out there who don't like to trash talk, I'm sorry for this post. It is not aimed at you guys. To all the trash talking moron packer fans out there. Keep it up. I find it funny. Is it hard to type when your foot is in your mouth??? Keep talking about your title town, and watch the Vikings go 10-1 in the next weeks!!! GO VIKINGS

You people really take this game too seriously...WOW! I cheer for the Pack but I don't have this unbelievably toxic attitude toward any of this BF BS. The Vikes always choke at the end of the year. It'll happen, but GB isn't a complete team yet either. I'll tell you what though, Aaron Rogers is doing a hell of a lot better that Brett was his first couple of years. He just doesn't have the full supporting cast, while Brett just walked into a complete football club with the Vikings. You think they'd be doing so well if they didn't have AP and Farve didn't have to win every game with his arm? Get a grip will you people!

Ya know............If Aaron Rodgers is "out" with a "sprained toe" for the Bucs game......MY GOD......I'll just wear my Favre Viking's jersey from now on.............I've been a Green Bay fan since before the first Super Bowl.................Does any Green Bay fan think that a "sprained toe" would've kept Bart Starr away from starting a game, let alone, Favre....????? I think NOT!!! Now don't get me wrong......being a Green Bay fan, I'm behind Aaron Rodgers all the way.........but c'mon, suck it up Aaron, and play, (Starr played with busted ribs for Lombardi )..........What would Vince Lombardi say??? I thought so..............

hey david havent u heard many of the around the horn and pti guys? tampa would lose to a @#$%in collage to u retard. if aaron rodgers could be cloned into 22 ppl and play as every starter for tampa, they would STILL be better than tampa now. i mean sure they would have a beastly qb then with rodgers, but since that would be a first in tampa i dont think it would matter. btw i loved the, what was it, 26 straight loses u guys had. not to mention ur one of two teams to not win a game in a whole season. dam u guys are even the lions @#$% homo

Hey David, hope you enjoyed your little rant. I just want to remind you of the following numbers:
    0-7
now, WHO sucks the big one? And who is going to STILL be winless tomorrow night while the other team is 5-3? Maybe you should look at your lousy joke of a team, or is that too painful for you, much like looking down must be when you take a whiz, unless you gotta sit to do that.....after the operation and all....
Let's say a big hello to the 0-16 Tampa Bay Sucs I mean Bucs HAHAHA
Hey at least the good news is that you are so freaking pathetic you can only go up from here, instead of down on those sailors like you usually do....
