Packers, Redskins hardest hit by injuries

  • Print

The playoff chase has gotten much more difficult for the Packers after they lost two key defensive players to season-ending injuries.

Cornerback Al Harris(notes) and linebacker Aaron Kampman(notes) will have knee surgery after suffering major injuries Sunday. Both were hurt on separate plays in the second half of a victory over San Francisco, apparently damaging their left knees. Coach Mike McCarthy would not confirm specific details of either injury.

“They’re both professionals,” McCarthy said. “I think we have a lot of confidence they’ll both respond very well. They’re both in great shape, both take great care of their bodies.”

The Packers have a short turnaround before visiting Detroit on Thanksgiving Day. The Lions also have injury concerns, particularly quarterback Matthew Stafford(notes).

Lions coach Jim Schwartz said Monday that the top overall pick in the draft was “extremely sore” after sustaining a separated left shoulder on the next-to-last play of the win over Cleveland, and he won’t play against Green Bay unless the pain subsides.

Stafford said he is “in a good amount of pain.”

Schwartz was also unsure about receiver Calvin Johnson(notes), who hurt his knee on the same play that Stafford was injured.

The Redskins, already among the league’s most injury-ravaged teams, added running back Ladell Betts(notes) (torn left knee ligaments), tackle Chad Rinehart(notes) (broken leg) and fullback Eddie Williams(notes) (broken leg) to their long injured reserve list. Betts is the backup to Clinton Portis(notes), who likely won’t return from his concussion for at least one more game. Tight end Chris Cooley(notes) will be in a walking boot for another 10 days, and DeAngelo Hall(notes) has a sprained knee.

“Brutal. Brutal. It’s been brutal,” said Rock Cartwright(notes), now Washington’s starting running back. “We lost a lot of key guys we planned on having for the season.”

The Steelers not only dropped to 6-4 with a stunning loss at Kansas City, they saw their top two quarterbacks go down. After Ben Roethlisberger(notes) left with concussion-like symptoms, backup Charlie Batch(notes) injured his left wrist during overtime. Batch could undergo surgery later this week and miss about six weeks. Batch sat out last season with a broken collarbone.

Arizona’s Kurt Warner(notes), the other starting QB in last February’s Super Bowl, left in the second quarter against the Rams after banging his head against the turf. Cardinals coach Ken Whisenhunt said he spoke with Warner on the flight home, and the quarterback was “very upbeat and alert.”

Warner will undergo a mandatory “baseline test” of his cognitive functions Tuesday.

“We are obviously optimistic that there won’t be any issues with that whatsoever,” Whisenhunt said.

Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo(notes) took a knee to the back early in a victory over Washington. He didn’t miss a snap.

“We’ve already talked to Tony and he says he feels a lot better,” coach Wade Phillips said. “He had a little bit of stiffness. He had quite a bit during the ballgame, but says he feels a lot better.”

Phillips expects Romo to play Thursday against Oakland.

Rams QB Marc Bulger(notes) will be sidelined 3-6 weeks with a broken left leg sustained in Sunday’s loss to the Cardinals. The team said it would not place Bulger on injured reserve.

He also underwent an MRI exam on his groin and hamstring Monday and was due for a second MRI on a swollen knee. Plus he’s being tested for concussion-related symptoms.

Linebacker Chris Chamberlain(notes) and rookie offensive tackle Jason Smith(notes) also will be tested for concussions Tuesday.

Dolphins nose tackle Jason Ferguson(notes) will miss the rest of the season with a quadriceps injury. Coach Tony Sparano was unsure if Ferguson, who turns 35 on Saturday, will need surgery.

“We lost a heck of a player and another captain and those types of things,” Sparano said. “It is happening every place you look around the league right now. That is what happens. It is Week 12.”

Dolphins running back Ronnie Brown(notes) (foot) and quarterback Chad Pennington(notes) (shoulder) have also suffered season-ending injuries this year.

Bills rookie guard Eric Wood(notes) had surgery to repair a broken left leg. Bills interim coach Perry Fewell said the operation to repair two broken bones was performed in Jacksonville on Sunday night, hours after Wood was hurt in an 18-15 loss to the Jaguars.

“It was not a pretty sight to see,” Fewell said of the injury that CBS did not replay because it was too gruesome.

Baltimore cornerback Fabian Washington(notes) is expected to miss the remainder of the season after hurting his knee during a loss to the Colts.

“It looks like he has an ACL tear. As of right now, we’re proceeding as if he’s done for the season,” coach John Harbaugh said Monday.

On his Twitter account, Washington wrote: “Thanx for all of your support. Yes I do have a torn ACL. But I’ll get through this. Go Ravens.”

Washington has started all 10 games.

Browns coach Eric Mangini questioned whether the Lions faked injuries to slow down Cleveland’s no-huddle offense in Detroit’s 38-37 win. Mangini said the Lions had several players leave the field injured, only to return.

“I’m just saying there were a lot of them,” Mangini said Monday.

Schwartz disputed Mangini’s claims.

“He’s way out of bounds on that,” Detroit’s first-year coach replied. “That couldn’t be further from the truth. Both teams were running no huddle, and the officials did a very good job of standing over the ball, so there was no need to do that.”

    Mike,

Don't go blasting Thompson and McCarthy over the Packers letting Favre go. If you would take Rodgers and Favre and have them switch teams, the Packers would be where they are at now or worse. The Vikings would be just as good. Rodgers is playing extremely well, so it is not a Favre issue. I have given Thompson and McCarthy the benefit of the doubt long enough though on the rest of the team. They both need to go and get people in place that will go after quality free-agents. The offensive line is killing the Packers and the secondary needs an overhaul. There are questions at linebacker as well.

Blast away on Thompson and McCarthy over other decisions, but not the Favre/Rodgers one. I will take Rodgers on my team over Favre right now and in the future. Rodgers has MANY more years to go than Favre, unless the offensive line gets him killed first. Rodgers is playing as good if not better than Favre right now anyway.

Can they make a correction to this article? Derrick Johnson didn't sack ben roethlisberger on the play he was injured. Ben escaped pressure and tried to run for a first down and Andy Studebaker started to bring him down and then Johnson tried to come and help but Studebaker brought him down right when Johnson got there and Ben got kneed in the head. No sack or tackle by Johnson, why are there always mistakes in these articles

Watch out Broncos fan. I think I've seen this before when the Chicago Bears had a certain QB wearing #8. He was almost flawless for about half the season. Then he injured his ankle (or knee or something). Problem was when he came back from that injury, he was worse than awful. Let's hope history doesnt repeat itself.

    TO ALL REDSKIN FANS

Well lets see ...Dan.Snyder is after all a losing owner that has blamed everyone but himself. What did we expect when the control was ripped away from the Cooke family that had a time honored love affair with our team and us fans. Now how does Danny 'boy' love his fans? Under Snyder the Redskins have also sued season ticket holders who were unable to pay due to personal misfortune.Sad , very sad.

R.I.PJack Kent Cook R.I.P..Mr.Snyder has gotten exactly what he has deserved....Since Snyder bought the Redskins, the team has had a losing record (78 wins and 90 losses, as of today), and it would be even worse if it had not been for Joe Gibbs return to give us fans some glimmer of hope.

It is not a surprise to see the same result year after year and quite franky who cares about a Dallas Redskins game his year as well? Dan why not fire all involved and head down to the sidelines and point a finger at players during the game itself? Time to call this season a bust and start preparing this team for next year by giving the "hungry' players a chance to shine. Lets see some players that actually want to play on the field for the rest of the season. Blame Zorn NO!!! Blame Jason Campbell?NO!!! It's Every damn one of them at this point and the report card reads....Failure on all levels of the Redskin orginization! It does start at the top Mr. Snyder and don't be surprised if the fans in the stands start wearing bags over their heads. It will repesent the empty bag of lies you have promised us so far.

Now lets see when was the last time Mr Snyder you concentrated anything on our offence line? Us fas as well as the media has screamed it loud enough for you t hear !!!Ten years? I sure hope ten years isnt oing to turn into 11 or 12 years. At this point though i would ot surprise us..

What;s that other crashing sound we here ? Your badly mismanaged Six Flags is now bankrupt due to mis-management Dan? At least you are consistent........THAT IS THE HOUSE THAT JACK BUILT!!! NOT FEDEX!!! JACK KENT COOKE STADIUM!!! RIP JACK AND KEEP THE HAUNTING OF DAN ALIVE. He has yet to build a thing!

I think the Raiders should trade Jamarcus Russell But how would take a horrible QB So the Raiders should bench Jamrcus Russell and sign Jeff Garcia as a starter and the Raiders in spring training should have named Jeff Garcia the starting QB but No Since AL DAVIS IS SO STUPIED THEY ARE THE WORST TEAM EVER AND SO IS AL DAVIS
