Ravens’ Edwards plans appeal of fine for roughness

  • Print

OWINGS MILLS, Maryland (AP)—Baltimore Ravens defensive end Dwan Edwards(notes) plans to appeal the $5,000 fine he received for a hit delivered to Cleveland Browns wide receiver Joshua Cribbs(notes) on Monday.

Edwards struck Cribbs with a forearm to the facemask on the final play of Baltimore’s 16-0 win.

Edwards said on Friday he will appeal in an effort “to get some of it back.” He said the fine was levied because the hit came at a time when Cribbs “supposedly shouldn’t have reasonably expected it.”

Cribbs spoke to Edwards on Tuesday and was convinced he wasn’t trying to injure him.

Earlier in the game, Ravens linebacker Terrell Suggs(notes) was hurt on an illegal block by Browns quarterback Brady Quinn(notes), who was fined $10,000 for unnecessary roughness.

Pittsburgh linebacker James Harrison(notes) was fined $5,000 for unnecessary roughness when he struck Cincinnati tackle Andrew Whitworth(notes) late.

Jacksonville defensive back Reggie Nelson(notes) was fined $7,500 for roughing New York Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez(notes) with a hit to the head area.

Tennessee cornerback Cortland Finnegan(notes) was fined $10,000 for trying to tackle an opponent by grabbing the facemask and unnecessary roughness for hitting an opponent late. Linebacker Keith Bulluck(notes) was fined $7,500 for unnecessary roughness for using a horse collar in tackling a running back.

Hey Chas, what you should have written: Brady Quinn should never be allowed in Cleveland Browns Stadium again. A "B" grade talent cheap shot against a bona fide Pro Bowl super-star....who needs that for sports entertainment? Terrell will be back and next time I hope he rips Brady's head off...

What is wrong with the picture? All these fines and all these bad referee calls? I am truly concerned that Tagliabue Jr. is more screwed up than Paul Sr. was.... Let's fix all the broken rules, figure out better head protection for these great athletes, and let 'em play for God's sake... Ypu're not improving the game there Roger, you're messing it up more!

Hey Chas- Cribbs is a fkn Superstar? You homer. Cribbs is good, but he's no damn superstar. Edwards is a very good player on a good defense. Dwan should be fined, I guess, but your strictly homer-based opinion of his "B-Talent" level really reeks. (ban him from the stadium?!) I think you're just pissed that your team blows right now. Suck it up. My home team (Ravens) sucked for a while too. Oh yeah, we also got our original team stolen. Just like you. We lost our colors. You didn't. We had no team for 13 years. You lost yours for 3. grrrrrr..... Anyway, Mike Holmgren will come in next year (or sooner) and fix everything in 2-3 seasons. The future is bright (even though I hope you always lose to the Ravens). Relax - Have a beer.

The NFL really does need to get a grip on these fines and penalties. I know it is critical to protect the players, but it is FOOTBALL!!!!

More ridiculous fines by the commissioner and the NFL front office. I can understand handing down a fine for a blow to the head, but now players are getting fined if they tackle a quarterback high or low. Pretty soon they should put a dress on quarterbacks and make it flag football. So many of these fines are just unnecessary.

Are you kidding me how did Edwards hit warrant a fine? What was so wrong about that hit? I didn't like seeing Cribbs get hurt, glad he's okay, but someones gotta tell me why that warrants a fine.

Edwards hit on Cribbs was completely legal. Cribbs had lateraled the ball back, and was immediately hit. It was the last play of the game and, not only should he have not been in the game, but Edwards was doing what he needed to do to avoid the play continuing. The only reason he was fined is because Cribbs is the only player of value on the Browns' roster.

It's no surprise for these players to keep losing money while playing in the NFL, aka the National Fine League! And now, I'm sick of these dumb losers like John D, SEN T, and Geoff D hating on the Vikes. You guys wish your team is where the Vikings are now, so these three losers should go get in the bed with each other swallow as much sperm as possible.

smilie, lewis got fined big because he hit Ochocinco late and to the head...

I can't say why Quinn didn't get fined more for going low, or why the Ravens Edwards didn't get fined more for hitting Cribbs late and to the face...

okay just curious but how the heck does ray lewis get fined 20k for a hit on ochocinco that doesn't injury him at all, and that ochocinco said he shouldn't be fined for, but Quinn only gets fined 10k for a season ending injury???
