49ers to play Broncos in London in 2010

LONDON (AP)—The San Francisco 49ers will play the Denver Broncos next season at Wembley Stadium, the fourth straight year the NFL will stage a regular-season game in the British capital.

The 49ers will be listed as the home team for the Oct. 31 game.

“For the past three years we have seen the extraordinary passion that exists for NFL football in the U.K.,” NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said in a statement. “We want to continue to build on that passion by strengthening our ties to our existing U.K. fans and creating new ones.”

The game between the five-time Super Bowl champion 49ers and two-time winner Broncos may not be the only one in Britain next season.

“The NFL will continue to explore the possibility of playing a second game in the UK in 2010,” the NFL said.

The 49ers and Broncos struggled to 8-8 records this season and missed the playoffs.

The NFL has played games at Wembley for the last three seasons, with more than 80,000 fans at each game. The first game featured the eventual Super Bowl champion New York Giants beating the Miami Dolphins 13-10. In 2008, the New Orleans Saints beat the San Diego Chargers 37-32. And this season, the New England Patriots defeated the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 35-7 in October.

“The previous games in London have had a playoff-like atmosphere to them, so that’s always a good thing to play in that type of an environment,” Broncos coach Josh McDaniels said. “We’ll be ready for the challenge.”

The 49ers dominated the NFL in the 1980s, winning four Super Bowls with Joe Montana as the star quarterback. The team won another Super Bowl in 1994.

“London is a wonderful venue for two of the most storied franchises in NFL history to square off,” 49ers president Jed York said.

San Francisco coach Mike Singletary, who is giving up a home game to play in London, said his players won’t be bothered by the long flight to England.

“I have no doubt that our players will be ready to go,” he said. “What a great opportunity it is for us to play in such a setting.”

The Broncos have played seven international exhibition games in the past, and team president Pat Bowlen said they were “honored” to come to Britain again.

“It’s a wonderful, historic opportunity for our franchise and will be an unforgettable experience for our players, coaches and fans,” Bowlen said.

Aside from Wembley, Manchester and Glasgow, Scotland, are being looked at as potential venues to host NFL games.

In October, before the New England-Tampa Bay game, Goodell said the idea of eventually putting an expansion team in London was of “tremendous interest” to the NFL. He gave no timeline when such a decision might be taken.

More importantly, BRONCO fans have got to stand up and be heard. The Ortin vs. Cutler contest that McDaniels is so happy he won, is over. It doesn’t matter. We do not have a QB capable of winning more than 8 games a year. If the Broncos and McDaniels believe that their system is great enough that a mediocre like Ortin is what they need, and will suffice, then I hope I can flip the switch and give up 35 year of being a fan, because it ain’t happening. Regardless of what happened this year, Ortin is the QB that for 5 years + could not beat Rex Grossman out of a starting joh.
That should be all that’s necessary to understand. He didn’t get screwed out of the starting job, he wasn’t as good as Grossman. And Grossman may be the third or fourth worst starting QB that has started in the last many moons.

Can the kid from Fresno play?? Is he going to have the ability to be a play off qb. Of course we don’t know yet, but it’s all about the decision we are making at this position. Of course other spots need filling, but not anywhere near as bad as we need to get a QB. Simms and Ortin shouldn’t even be in training camp. What we did gain by playing Ortin?? McDaniels has a pretty good scheme, and it appears it’s good enough to be a middle of the road team without a less than middle of the road QB. My concern is, McDaniel had Cassel at New England playing for Brady and putting together a good year, looking like a stud. He wasn’t just a replacement QB that came in a worked a great system that got him there. He is a very good QB. It wasn’t some fricken magic from the Patriots or McDaniel, they were a stud team, and he is a very good QB. That sure as heck doesn’t mean, an Ortin, or Simms can win, just because you watched a substitute QB do it.; These two guys are horrible. Sorry fans. It’s the gospel. If we throw a young new QB to the wolfs, and he gets his butt kicked, is it worse than putting up with another year of what I just witnessed.

There are QB’s that are not afraid of any challenge, while Ortin is a weak QB with deer in the head lights, and has been 7 years in this league and is afraid of the job. SORRY. We have to draft a QB or trade for one, and I don’t see anyone out there I want. Lets get a future started, and just live with the present.

the question is, does it get the NFL anything when they schedule these games. They sell some more jerseys than they would have, but is it really gaining anything for the league. There will never be an NFL football team franchise on foreign soil, so what's the point?

i'm with you jeff. i'm a bronco fan living in northern california. i too planned on going to the 49er bronco game. i hate having to see my favourite team in the scuz bucket that is the oakland coliseum, surrounded by the scum of the earth in radier fans. i shouldn't worry though now that the nfl has a rotating schedule the broncos will be back in san fran in eight years. maybe we'll be better by then.

@KGB: The Broncos and 49ers were only average this year, but who knows what will happen next season? The 2008 Titans got the #1 AFC seed, but this time around were an 8-8 team with no playoff appearance. '08 Dolphins AFC East champion. '09 Dolphins only third in the division. '08 Steelers win the Super Bowl, '09 team doesn't make the playoffs, etc.

The Bills-Jets game in Toronto was within driving distance of Buffalo, so that didn't really cheat anyone out of a home game, but London is geographically as far from San Francisco as you can get.

It will be interesting to see how the travel effects these two west 'coast' teams. Check out this great article about what the London game did to the 2008 Chargers http://thesportsthought.com/

Why didn't they pick a pre-season game. No one wants to go to them anyway. I would rather get credit for a pre-season ticket ( the same cost) then a regular season game.

I'll bet the Niners are hoping the game is during the end of the season when the Broncos fall apart and blow it again.

Die-hard 49ers fan and season-ticket holder here. I won't be paying anything for that game and neither will any other ticket holder. A few things to note

    1. Why fly two teams across the USA? Wrong geographical regions, especially having SF as the home team...
    2. One less game at home means a lot of lost revenue (Parking - $25, Beers, etc. etc.)
    3. 49ers hosted both a Monday night and Thursday night football game in 09'.
    4. Why choose two mediocre teams to play this game? Both 09' records ... mediocre..

We bring them Amrican style football is not a problem but why in the hell don't they send their fair share to Iraq and Afghanistan.
We Americans have to hold up freedom for others while they sit back and enjoy American football? Hive me a break.
Meesage to Europe: We saved your butt once and sometimes twice. And will probably do it again because America is the greatest country on earth.

I can't believe all of the stupid racist statement that got posted after this report. Are all of you THAT small minded??? If you don't have anything positive to say about the progress of the NFL as a business and expanding it's fan base, then you need to retread to your little shacks in the Kentucky mountains and keep sucking down your moonshine.

    Stupid bigots.

Who cares if they have a game overseas??? It's not like the NFL as a whole is MOVING there!

    Morons...

Here they go again with this London stuff. Cheating teams out of a home game and precious home field advantage..

How about they just play the Probowl in London. Seems like the most practical solution to me.

I agree with 2 statements posted; 1) It's not at all fair to the fans of the teams sent over the pond here at home. Are season ticket holders reimbursed for the "home game" they'll not get to attend? 2) NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE, not international, NATIONAL. This is American football. If they eant to see our style of football in Europe, they can get Directv and NFL Sunday Ticket. OR!! Maybe they should have supported NFL Europe more.

What happens to all the season ticket holders in San Francisco? Do they only pay for 7 regular season games? Does this game come after a bye week for San Francisco and Denver? This does not make any sense to me. Somebody is making some money off this stunt. I am a lifelong 49ers fan living in Houston so it does not directly affect me (except for the fact they are loosing home field advantage for 1 game) but it makes me mad for all the season ticket holders in San Francisco.
