Lions QB Stafford will rest shoulder vs. Ravens

ALLEN PARK, Mich. (AP)—The Detroit Lions plan to rest Matthew Stafford’s(notes) banged-up, non-throwing shoulder for at least one game.

They don’t expect to shut him down for the rest of the season.

Lions coach Jim Schwartz said Wednesday that Daunte Culpepper(notes) will start at Baltimore and Stafford likely will be the No. 3 quarterback.

Stafford aggravated his left shoulder Sunday at Cincinnati.

“If he hadn’t taken that hit in the fourth quarter of the Cincy game, we wouldn’t be having this discussion,” Schwartz said. “It was a very similar hit to the one that he took in the Cleveland game and we want to avoid the situation where it becomes something chronic.

“Structurally, everything is still on course. It’s sore and we just wanted to avoid a continuing cycle of come back, get hit, come back, get hit. We’ll give it time to rest and put it behind him.”

Schwartz acknowledged there’s a chance Stafford will miss more than one game.

The No. 1 pick in the 2009 NFL draft gained some fame when he hurt the shoulder Nov. 22 against Cleveland. He put himself back in the game after getting injured and threw his fifth touchdown pass on an untimed play.

Stafford was miked for sound during the game NFL Films president Steve Sabol called it “the most dramatic player wiring ever.”

He has thrown 13 TDs and 20 interceptions in 10 games.

Stafford missed two games with an injured right knee. Culpepper threw one TD and two interceptions in his two starts both of which were losses.

Schwartz said the team did not consider starting Drew Stanton(notes) against the Ravens.

“Daunte is our backup quarterback,” he said. “We’ve had no change in our depth chart. We have a lot of confidence in Daunte.”

Schwartz, a first-year head coach, went against his previous policy of announcing only the required about of information about injured players.

“It is kind of against the grain from the way we’ve done things in the past, but there are some benefits to doing it this way also,” he said.

Schwartz told Stafford and Culpepper about his plans and wanted both to avoid answering questions about the situation this week.

When Stafford got the start on Thanksgiving, Culpepper looked like he was upset because he expected to play.

Actually Peyton Manning started off his career with 28 ints and 26 td's. He's been money since! Stafford has the psychological makeup to be a great QB and Calvin Johnson (if healthy) will benefit from Stafford's development. Lions do have something to be hopeful about, Stafford and Johnson.

If anyone knows, Peyton Manning started off his career with 19 INTS. Just relax, Stafford is going to be good. Schwartz has the knowledge to take this team to the next level. Another good draft and some good FA pick ups in the off season and we could be looking at a decent team next year.

The shoulder thing is just an excuse. Schwartz sees "52" in his head knocking the stuffing out of his franchise QB. Sending Stafford out there would not only be stupid it's also the kind of thing that can get you fired. Remember, Eddie George was never the same after that hit by Ray Lewis.

Detroit will make the playoffs next year IF, and its a big IF, They can pick up some defense. They can't stop the run or the pass. Get that big boy from nebraska and a hard hittin saftey and maybe you might be able to scare some teams into losing.

Sabredog, great post, but instead of going ingram, why not get Reggie Bush in free agency then spend the rest of your time drafting defense. Or in a crazy fun world, get Julius Peppers in Free agency, trade down and draft Ndamukong Suh from Nebraska...those two with Sammie Hill on the defensive front would be a pretty scary start next year...

sabre dog--if they let nate mcmillan i see no reason why they shouldnt let you---sound opinion you have there---id stay away from ingram though---many miles on those legs already--not that he wouldnt be a good pick but i think you definetly need some o-line help---with no salary cap next year i try to find it in free agency and draft d-line high---i think they could find quality lb's in later rounds the position seems to be strong coming in this year--if you draft offense i think you have to go receiver if a good one is available more weapons the better---colts formula--take offense high find defense low unless a sleeper like freeney is out there---im die hard colts fan but id love to see detroit make some noise and i really dont think they are that far from it---we were 3-13 peyton's rookie year and 13-3 the next so you just cant ever tell.

Let's face it, the Lions have "zero chance" against the Ravens, with or without Stafford. We need to wake up. He's still a rookie and regardless of his injury, he showed god given talent at times and "what the f#@ck" next. The Lions need to consider some options for the 2010 Draft. The Lions need to either draft an awesome DT, DE, or a OT with their first pick, or trade down, and get both.

Another scenario could be them taking Mark Ingram/RB from Alabama with their first pick if he's available. This would give you two awesome, young RBs, but Ingram also nets you points on his feet, through the air, and he can block. They'd just have to be smart in the later rounds and get a great OT in the second rd. and hopefully a number 2 Receiver. After that make trades and try to get another 2nd Rd. pick or early 3 Rd. pick. They now need to fill defense from this point on and maybe a Guard. Hate to say it but they should consider a late rd. QB. You can never have enough depth.

Free Agents they should look at are DT, DE, RB, CB, or OT.

I would love to see this team on Offense come at you like the Colts. Establish "one" guy, think about a player like Dallas Clark, who can catch out of the Backfield, Sideline routes, and Slant routes but knows the hits coming and hits back. The difference I'd make would be too focus on the run with multiple style backs, like the Giants. In a perfect world one of the RBs is "that guy". Plus you add in a number 2 WR. Big. Add a couple free agent Defensive players if the cap room allows it. Woodson??I'd change to a 3-4 Defense. It took GB half the season to get adjusted to the 3-4 but it looks great now. Maybe even consider picking up a LB and DT in Free Agency.

I should be an Assistant GM for the Lions.
