Stafford seals status as franchise QB for Lions

ALLEN PARK, Mich. (AP)—Matthew Stafford(notes) sat at his locker, answering and dodging questions about his sore shoulder.

The Detroit Lions quarterback then took off his jersey and displayed a sense of humor.

“Look at that,” Stafford joked.

He will have to do more than raise his dislocated left shoulder and throwing arm to get clearance for the Thanksgiving Day game against the Green Bay Packers.

“It’s unlikely that he’s going to play, but we’ll see,” Detroit coach Jim Schwartz said. “It’s a deal if it gets better in a couple of days and it’s not as painful, he’ll be able to get out there.”

The No. 1 pick in the NFL draft, the guy who set an NFL record on Sunday in a thrilling 38-37 win over Cleveland, had to sit and watch his teammates go through their only full practice of the week on Tuesday. So did standout receiver Calvin Johnson(notes), who has hand and knee injuries.

Even if Stafford isn’t on the field, he has given long-suffering fans a reason to have hope the future will be better. Previous first-round picks Joey Harrington(notes), Andre Ware and Chuck Long failed to deliver for a franchise that has one Pro Bowl QB—and one playoff victory—since winning the 1957 NFL title.

The 21-year-old Stafford set an NFL rookie passing record with 422 yards passing against the Browns on Sunday and became the youngest player to throw five TDs in a game.

The fifth TD came with no time on the clock, after Stafford went to the sideline and was flat on his back getting his shoulder evaluated. He came back out for the game-winning throw with his right arm after his left shoulder was slammed to the turf on the previous play.

That Stafford went back on the field won praise from teammates and opponents while generating a positive buzz the Lions haven’t had since they were 6-2 in the 2007 season.

Stafford’s feats earned him NFC offensive player of the week honors.

“If this franchise is ever going to turn the corner, the list of quarterbacks it has gone through has to stop with him,” said center Dominic Raiola(notes), who has endured a 33-105 record since Detroit drafted him in 2001. “I think he took the big step last game, getting a signature win after being down by 21 and throwing an interception late in the game and running a 2-minute drill without any time-outs.”

Stafford led the Lions’ biggest comeback in a game since 1957 when Bobby Layne helped them rally from a 24-point deficit against the Colts. Stafford and Layne both attended Highland Park High School in Texas.

As much as Schwartz has been encouraged by Stafford’s talent and moxie, he is not ready to say his gutsy play at the end of Cleveland game put him on another level.

“Let’s let him play more than one year before we start talking about that,” Schwartz said.

It did, though, impress a peer.

“I think it showed a lot of heart, a lot of toughness,” Green Bay quarterback Aaron Rodgers(notes) said. “I think he played a very good game, and to be able to go back out there after he looked like he had a serious injury was very admirable.”

Stafford’s jersey from Sunday was sent to the Pro Football Hall of Fame. And the play might live on in league lore for years because Stafford was wired for sound by NFL Films during the game, making him one of 350-plus players who have done that since 1965. NFL Films president Steve Sabol called it the “most dramatic player wiring ever.”

As for Stafford, he’s just hoping to get over the soreness and back on the field.

“It’s getting better,” Stafford said of his shoulder. “It’s moving in the right direction.”

Maybe the Lions are, too.

The stage is set for Stafford. He did it against the Browns. Now can he and his team beat the Packers on Thanksgiving Day? Why not? If he and Johnson can play, it will make for an interesting game. Take the points and the Lions.

What is with the Lions and injuries ????...every week, it's key players !!...are they that out of shape ?...or does our strength and conditioning coach suck also ?..It always seems like it's always the offensive players,...whenever Stafford's out,...Calvin is out,...or maybe we just have had pure stinking bad luck for years. I sure hope Calvin doesn't turn out to be a Charles Rogers or Drew Stanton. It's too bad the rest of the Lions don't have the heart Stafford has,...if they had, maybe we would be 9-2 instad of 2-9 ( that was a joke ).....28 Lions with some sort of injuries !!...thats over HALF the team !!.....betcha all those bumps and bruises don't keep those players from clubbing !!

When 1-8 Cleveland played at 1-8 Detroit, the game was blacked out locally, for humanitarian reasons. It turned out to be quite an entertaining contest. You've got to love any game in which the Detroit Lions, entering on a 2-31 stretch, were three-point favorites...lol

I recall Peyton Manning spitting out blood early in his career cuz his o-line was awful. It hasn't really had any lasting impact on his career. Not saying that Stafford will be the next Peyton Manning, just saying that getting knocked around early in your career doesn't necessarily mean it will be short and unproductive.

I live in Georgia, watched Stafford play almost all college games. By starting Stafford his first year, the Detroit organization and the NFL's sorriest OL has shortened his NFL career. He's trying so hard, but his body can't take but so much. Let Culpepper get the crap beat out of him, then trade for and draft an OL, then start Stafford.

The Lions will play out of their a$$ on Thanksgiving (as they usually do against the Packers every time the two teams play on Turkey Day) and they will give the Packers what for before succumbing: but I wouldn't be surprised if the Lions win.(this is from a Packer fan)

As a long suffering Lions fan, it's really cool to see the coverage that Matt Stafford has gotten from national media this week. It hasn't happened to this team since Barry Sanders retired. He totally deserves the attention and I'm really hoping that he plays on Thursday. It's the only nationally televised game the Lions get every year. It would really suck not to have their best player on the field. Without him, this team is really tough to watch.

Looking forward to Thanksgiving Day's game, regardess of who is playing on the Lions team; they have depth now that so many receivers are catching what's thrown to them. With two defense out on the opposition team, it could be interesting. Let's wait and see who shows up.

I have said it "before" day one, that Stafford should not start this season, at least not like they are

starting him. My reasoning: the lions don't have enough quality personal to protect him. Look at his

condition right now, bad knee and dislocated shoulder??????? WTF Is the lions organization

STUPID??? Oh yea, that's right, they are stupid. They actually wrote the book: "How to Destroy a

Football Player's Career in One Simple Season".

Nostradamas knows, he can predict the future.

422 Yards of pass offense, 11 TD passes for the season, and 5 of them in week 11, Also `14 Picks for the season, afraid i have to see more than that. The media made him, now they are calling him the Franchise QB, its a long way to go before that title is earned. Lets see what they do against Green Bay and Chicago. I have suffered with them, so i want to see them do well.

I was actually at the only Lions playoff win in my lifetime. Go Lions, we just need to get Kramer and Willie Green the TD machine back in action. Sanders was not so bad either.

It's taken me a few days to deal with my Lions winning-again.No thanks to the freakin' Fords. They've shown very little interest in the team ,the league, the sport in general. It's about $$$, and they fritter it away every chance they get.One could say "it's their money", and that's true, but if they want to flush it down the toilet, they don't have to take so many of us down with their crap. How can the Fords be even remotely proud of a team that's sucked since they've owned it??I love my beleageured Lions.I despise the owners.Deeply.No, DEEPER THAN THAT!!Just keep digging...
