Lions want wins, not rest for Stafford and Johnson

  • Print

ALLEN PARK, Mich. (AP)—Calvin Johnson(notes) struggled to simply walk out of Ford Field.

The Detroit Lions receiver left the locker room and hobbled in a hallway, then could not bend his right knee as he went up stairs.

The good news, though, for Detroit is that its best player is not as hurt as he appeared to be after missing much of Sunday’s loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Detroit coach Jim Schwartz said Monday he would not label Johnson’s injury as significant, adding the team will know more Wednesday.

The Lions did lose a key player though, putting cornerback Eric King(notes) on injured reserve with an injured left shoulder.

Quarterback Matthew Stafford(notes) did not play against Pittsburgh after hurting his right knee the previous week and Schwartz would not speculate on his status for Sunday’s game at Green Bay. If Stafford is healthy, Schwartz said he is the clear-cut starter over Daunte Culpepper(notes).

Schwartz insisted he would not consider the upcoming bye when deciding whether Stafford would play the Packers.

“We’ll see where he is and see how he’s trending,” Schwartz said. “If he’s trending up and he’s improving and we can get him snaps, then we have a good chance to get him on the field. If not, then we won’t.

“That has nothing to do with an eye toward the bye week and we can get him an extra week of rest or anything else. Our objective is to win this game. We have to win this game.”

After traveling to face the Packers as two-touchdown underdogs, Detroit has a bye before likely being a favorite to beat the St. Louis Rams on Nov. 1 at home.

Detroit had a closely contested game with the defending champion Steelers and was competitive at times in two of its other three losses.

Schwartz sees progress, but results have made it relatively moot.

“You don’t need to play well; you don’t need to have a chance at the end; you don’t need to overcome adversity and all that other stuff,” he said. “You need to win games and we’re not there yet. We still have a lot of work to do.”

Center Dominic Raiola(notes) agrees and yet is encouraged about how much better the Lions are than they were last year as the NFL’s first 0-16 team.

“It’s totally different, I know that,” Raiola said. “If you can’t see that just by watching, I don’t know what you’re watching.”

#64 Bulldog: Totally correct. If more visitors buys tickets to make sure a Lions' game gets on TV, the Lions' are far more pathetic than we all think. Let's go Vikings

Kevin52, thanks for your comments. I also agree with your posts. I just wanted to add that it's so pathetic when a visiting teams fans have to buy the tickets so the Lions can be seen on television. Also, notice in their interviews after the games how disturbed they appear for losing...what a buch of crap. If they were so disappointed with their play, they would actually play and give their best, but has that ever happened ? Maybe, like I see it, they are playing their best and are incapable of playing anything else but flag football....but then again, even in flag football you have to block for the runner or Quarterback, something that they are still unable to do. If you have a line that can block, you don't have to be the best quarterback to look like a super star. If mankind existed for another trillion years, the Lions would still be telling us that thay are in the process of rebuilding and still be 0 and 16 or 1 and 15. Lord knows, if I had the money or investors, I would pettition the NFL for another team in Michigan...a real pro-football team, not a washed up want to be called pro football team like the Lions.
By the way Kevin52, I am 47 years old. Again, thanks for your comments and posts. Have a great day.

Bulldog is right on, regretfully. Either he is an older person who has heard these predictions for years as I have, or he is a younger person who has a head on his shoulders and can read through the crappola that the Lions media passes out yearly. I have lost track of the number of rebuliding programs in my 54 years of life. I have heard the "just wait until next year" or "we are building for the future" so many times from fans and the Lions that it makes you numb. I would love nothing better than to see a pro football team in Detroit but it will not happen under Wm. Clay Ford. He drafts a few high profile names to keep fools coming back with hopes for the "future". He has no intention of getting a bunch of good players because it would cost him money. I remember he got Barry Sanders in a response to a huge drop in attendance to games. If he were really interested in building a team, he would have gotten a GM with football experience (in the front office, not as a player/tv analyst). There were several available this year but he elected to keep Millen men instead -- and a great deal of the Lion fans bought it!!! Chris wrote that if Stafford had just 2 more seconds, he would be great. Well Chris, he will never get 1 more second with that awful bunch we call O-linemen. They are the worst collection of misfit linemen I have ever seen. One guy here blamed Culpepper for taking 3 sacks in a row instead of getting rid of it. Sometimes it is better to take a sack than to throw one up wildly. To just get rid of it, you still need a little time. I coached linemen for years and a good line will give their qb 4 seconds. When was the last time you saw that in Detroit? The Patriot maybe, but not in Detroit. We had the opportunity of a lifetime to get linemen this year and didn't. One fan here said just wait until the next draft and we will but I say to him, we brought this bunch in at about the same time as Harrington. Can you really blame every singe qb we had because they can't handle the pressure of a Backus "look-out block"? Backus is the master of that particular block, by the way. Sorry fans, I will probably die of old age before the Lions win a championship. I guess I shouldn't complain after all, they did win one when I was 2 years old. That's better than most here.

It would be hilarious if the Rams beat the crap out of our Lionnesses...it would be a puuurrrrfect outcome. They can then say how much better they are doing again.....they're a joke. Why hasn't anyone petitioned the NFL for a real NFL team in Michigan.....besides the losing Lions ??

Hey Steven, # 44...are you kidding ? Patience, really ? The Lions have been rebuiling for 57 years. How much patience should we have ? It hasn't taken any team 57 years to rebuild. The sad part about it all, is that they aren't rebuilding, they say they are but they aren't. They pick a few good guys to please a few people and as they always do, keep the crap like backass backus and raoli and say that they are rebuiling. We have been hearing "WE ARE IN THE PROCESS OF REBUILDING", for 57 years. How ignorant are they to think that we believe them. What in the hell is smith doing as our running back ? He's a piece of sh*t too. We take everyones washed up players, because our organization is a retirement home for want to be players, that were never able to play. They come here, get their full retirement pay and don't have to play. They have done that for 57 years and they will continue to do so. To say the Ford's care, is ludicrise....they are a tax right off so why would they care ? Schwartz cost the game against pittsburg as well as raiola and backass backus, smith and a few others. When it was 4th and 5, and pitt had the penalty, why did his dumb ass take the 3 points and not get a measurement to see if they would have had a first down ?? He's just another ignorant ass we added to the all ready stew of sorry ass excuse for a player and personnel want to be's. The Lions will be losers way past our life time. People need to realize the truth and stop giving themselves false hope over this team....once a loser, always a loser. Stafford is not the answer..and remember, he has had stupid throws in every game he played and got intercepted as well. Let's not put it all on Culpepper.

stafford is the man. he was the man at georgia and he will be the man for the lions. they just got to give him about 2 more seconds every snap and he can make it happen. the team is growing and this year will not be there year but they are going to be a play off team within the next three anyone that knows football should see how everything is falling into place. each game the team improves over there last week game. well with the exception of the o line. they suck so next year draft we build that up. let stafford work with a bad oline this year and next year draft him a line and he will take you to the top. i am not a lions fan and necer will be but i have been impressed with what the head coach is doing and i will follow them from here on now because stafforrd is one of the most impressive qbs i have ever seen

@#34 - Drew Stanton should be the QB? Because you met two Lions O-linemen at the casino and they decided to tell that to you (and not the media or anyone else?)

It probably sounded something like (with a drunk slur), "As bad as our line is at pass protection, we should put that scrambling QB in. What's his name, Stanton? He always gets hurt anyway."

#55...Holly... come on now, get real. Culpepper stood there and took three sacks in a row, and didn't even try to get rid of the ball when he needed a score. He also threw one behind the line from the pocket. He is not that good of a quarterback. I see why they started Stafford this year. Any intelligent fan should see it too.

The Lions are so stupid. Culpepper came closer to beating Pittsburgh than Stafford could ever dream of. They obviously care more about establishing a franchise QB than winning games. They should at least admit it.

For those fans who think Stafford should be in there (with that pathetic line). We are doing the same thing to him we did to Joey Harrington. Putting him in there with no protection and 2 of those same linemen (Riola & Backus). Harrington looked ok at first, and then quickly had his confidence destroyed, both by getting hit every pass play and by his own line (2 afore mentioned players) throwing him under the media bus and blaming him for not throwing fast enough. Don't play Stafford until you can protect him. Culpepper has the experience to hopefully not lose his mind under a withering pass rush. For the guy who likes Riola, forget it! He pass blocks with his head down (looking at the ground) and trying to use his peripheral vision. It doesn't work. Linemen have to have their heads up and the center has to be looking everywhere to pick up the blitz. Backus cannot handle the outside rush, never could even at Michigan. Why Oh Why didn't we draft linemen this year with all those extra picks. We'll never get a chance like it again!

Our wonderful, backwards building Lions! Good teams build from the lines up, bad teams like the Lions, build from skill position up. They have done it for years and see how well it works! We cannot protect those skill players so they get hurt. This past draft, we had the chance of a lifetime to draft quality linemen on both sides. Not the Lions, they go after a qb who the can't protect. Before the season is done, you can expect to hear grumbling from the O-line saying Stafford doesn't move fast enough or he holds the ball too long. Remember when Harrington came in and the high hopes? I remember watching Joey having to throw over his back just to avoid getting killed because the def. was getting to his drop back position at the same time he was. He had NO protection. Then out comes Riola and blames Harrington for not getting rid of the ball fast enough. Does anyone here think Tom Brady could make the Lions? I'm telling you no, because he would get hit before he could find the receivers. The problem hasn't been with the qb's, though almost everyone is blaming them, it it with the O-line! Look how many sacks against us this past week. 7! I suppose it's Culpepper's fault! This team will never amount to anything until our lines are addressed! We could have drafted a line this year and picked up one of the many good qbs coming out next year, AFTER our line had a year under their belts. Not the Detroit (Backward) Lions! They see those glamourous skill players and can't resist. It's been going on for 51 Bill Ford Years! He doesn't know how to set up a successful sports organization. Everyone blamed Millen but it has gone on long before Millen was out of diapers. Everybody cheered when Millen was fired and praised the new people, but alas, they weren't new at all. They were Millen's own hires!!! I'm sorry to you optomists but they haven't won a championship since I was 2 years old (1957)! Nothing will change as long a Ford owns the team. Most owners get coaches for coaching ability but our new coach was hired after a good showing in a mock news conference! If Stafford and Johnson are our future, why would you take the chance to play them hurt this weekend? Where's the rush? We are not going to make any playoffs this year! Rest them, but NO, we have to impress the media and fans with the "win at all costs" speech. If we were in the playoff hunt, then you would evaluate them and play them if possible, but we are not!
Sorry folks, the faces change, the uniforms change, but the Lions never will! Or at least, they won't until Wm. Clay Ford passes on!

This is a new team. How often do you have such high turnover within team and have instant success? It's not going to happen in one season. I'm glad the Lions drafted who they did, because now they can focus on surrounding those skill players with o-line and d-line (IF they do. I pray that they do.) People can cut on the Lions all they want to, but the fact is that even with starting Stafford over Culpepper, they are a much better team than they were last year, and will probably only get better within the next 5 years. Brown, Stafford, Pettigrew, Hill, and Williams were all good draft picks.

Stafford is a much more raw QB but has the higher potential of the the 2 in the long run he will be the better choice. I have faith Scwartz will get the secondary fixed and will likely involve buchanon more and with eric king out..whos not really all that good we may see a free agent or even a trade. But hear me out I think the packers are gonna have there work cut out for them though they have a great CB pair the offensive line could cost you this game and detroit is hungry for a division win. The reason culpepper is the backup is because he tryed to outplay stafford by not taking any risk stafford played to make plays he wasn't afraid to throw it up to calvin which is what they want. and he has shown much improvment in every game he has played. I love that dante is the backup it payed off sunday but matthew is and should be the QB it will payoff next year I garuntee it. Great job on special teams this week williams and follek did great this week but derrick really stepped up when calvin went out.

You know, guys, I love picking on the miserable Lions. They've always have and always will suck ass. Will these pathetic Lions fans just give up on their team and admit they're as low as the St. Louis Rams and the Oakland Raiders. It ain't like Stafford is gonna be an MVP someday, cause he's PLAYING FOR THE DAMN LIONS and have to put with their losing culture there, unless he gets traded to a better team. Enjoy losing, Lions fans, as you guys will always be on the bottom of the NFC North in 4th place. Yall can't beat the Packers, Bears, and SHOLE AS HELL not my Vikings, and that amounts up to 6 additonal losses if yall can't beat divisional rivals. Keep losing Lions, keep losing, you're doing a good job. Let go Vikings!

Patience is needed when you are trying to build a team from scratch. You need to tolerate a few losses. Troy Aikman went 1-15 in his first year and look at what he had done after that.
