Jets QB Sanchez donates 1,000 hot dogs, burgers

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP)—Mark Sanchez(notes) is hot-doggin’ it again.

This time, the New York Jets’ rookie quarterback isn’t sneaking a snack on the sideline, though.

Sanchez bought 500 hot dogs and 500 hamburgers, along with buns and rolls, through A&P supermarket, and donated them to the Community Soup Kitchen of Morristown, N.J.

“Something happened here and wanted to turn it into a positive,” Sanchez said Wednesday.

Sanchez was grilled Sunday after television cameras caught him trying to discreetly put mustard on a hot dog and eat it late in New York’s 38-0 win at Oakland. He apologized after the game, saying he didn’t feel well and needed to eat something.

“I didn’t mean it as a form of disrespect,” Sanchez said, adding that the incident served as a reminder that his actions on and off the field will be scrutinized as an NFL quarterback.

“I wasn’t trying to take away from anything the team had going on,” he said. “People have gotten some laughs out of it and we all kind of joked about it, but it’s one of those things that I definitely need to learn from and it was a mistake. It won’t happen again.”

He also wouldn’t reveal who served him up the frankfurter that landed him in hot water.

“I can’t roll over on my hot dog connect,” he said with a grin.

Coach Rex Ryan said he was “disappointed” with Sanchez, and realizes the quarterback didn’t mean to be disrespectful—although that’s how it appeared to some.

“To me, I’m an old-school football guy and you’re playing a great game of football. I know you’re hungry, but leave that for the fans,” Ryan said. “You can go to the locker room and you can eat afterward. You know, hey, that’s not the biggest mistake he’s ever going to make.”

Ryan said he spoke to Sanchez about the incident on the flight home, and was pleased about the plan the quarterback cooked up.

“It is unfortunate that here we have a great game, run for 300-some yards— breakout game—38-to-zip score, get a shutout and now the focus is on the hot dog,” Ryan said. “I think Mark is doing the right thing with the plans that he has.”

Michael Vick got jail time for killing dogs. Sanchez does it on the sideline during a game and the league just looks the other way.

This really shows how pathetic the news media is these days - a guy can't even grab a bite to eat without hearing about it. I'd rather see him eat a hot dog and not throw the picks, than see him throwing picks w/o the dog - bring him one every game.

I can see it now......Ocho having a pizza delivered during the game........hahahahahah

anyway, I dont think it was that big of a deal. I think it happens all the time actually. Im sure Cutler has been given some food to raise his blood sugars during a game. Im sure others have been given food to calm and upset stomach.

I am surprised he wasnt fined by the No Fun League though and I am more than impressed with the way he handled it.

I think it was a class move by Sanchez to donate the food. Its actions like this that should be commended, not berated.

    Well done Mark, well done!

Playing the Raiders the whole team could eat pizza, Hot Dogs, and drink beer during the game. There ahead by 38 against the Raiders and the media dwells on such trivial things.

"Sanchez was grilled Sunday" - come on!!

Its only hotdogs and burgers..not like he was pounding a 40oz on the sidelines.

How many people can't understand that sometimes when a person has a stomach ache, then a good thing to do is to eat something to settle it down? Apparently, there are millions of them.

Also, hot dogs are served at football stadiums, and thus a hot dog was readily-available. It wasn't as if Mr. Sanchez had sent out for some chicken cordon bleu, a swordfish dinner, or some barbecued pork chops.

It is also a very fine gesture of Mr. Sanchez's to donate a large amount of food for the benefit of the people who use the Community Soup Kitchen of Morristown, N.J., for the nourishment to keep body and soul together.

    hungry? why wait?
What's wrong with eating in the sideline? Sanchez could eat hot dog on one hand and throw touchdowns on the other hand anyway. It was the raiders, guys. common. With JR pulls the string for the radiers, no wonder they didn't score any touchdown. worst comes to worst, it would just be a tied game. 0-0.

Don't care. If they are thirsty, they should drink. If they need food, they should eat. Whatever. Tiger Woods eats a banana while he's kicking everyone's butt and it's OK. Next time he should bring some healthy food so he can fuel up on the sideline.

The guy wasn't drinking a beer and telling everyone the Raiders suck. (Which, of course, everyone knows they do.) This is lazy reporting. Find something real to talk about. I guess it did get him to donate to the needy. So that was OK.

good lord...the story that won't go away. As I said before, he was not trying to disrespect Oakland...the man was hungry and was even discreet about eating it. He did not need to apologize, but I am glad he gave to charity.

If a player needs to eat to keep from passing out, who cares.. It's great some charity is getting to reap the benifits, but the media really will put a bad spin on anything.

Your body knows when it desperately needs something and maybe his was telling him he was a little hypoglycemic. If you feel like you need food or drink suddenly and it can't wait this could be a precursor to severe medical problems.
