Jets waive CB Carroll, sign LB Cummings

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP)—The New York Jets waived cornerback Ahmad Carroll(notes), one of their special teams standouts, and signed linebacker Kenwin Cummings(notes) from the practice squad Monday.

The moves came a day after New York lost to Jacksonville 24-22 on Josh Scobee’s(notes) 21-yard field goal as time expired. Coach Rex Ryan said Carroll became expendable because undrafted free agent Marquice Cole(notes) had earned the spot on special teams.

Carroll, nicknamed “Batman,” was inactive for New York’s last two games. He tied for the team lead last year with 26 special teams tackles. Carroll has had trouble off the field in the past, but this move had nothing to do with any legal matters.

“I think Cole has really taken his role,” Ryan said. “I think he’s done an outstanding job. That’s not a slight to Batman. It’s just that I think this guy won the job and it’s a chance for us to get Kenwin Cummings up.”

Carroll was drafted in the first round by Green Bay in 2004. He signed with the Jets in July 2008 and had 30 special teams tackles in 22 games. Carroll also played for Jacksonville.

Cummings, an undrafted free agent out of Wingate, has spent most of the last two seasons on the Jets’ practice squad. He was inactive for the season opener at Miami last year.

    This is such a big blow to the Jets' defense. I think opposing teams will run on them with ease now without Jenkins in there.

    On some points I stand corrected.Danny was over taken as the all time leading rusher at all NCAA levels last December by Nate Kmic of Mt Union.Where is he ,a white tailback from a Div 3 school, now?
    I personally know a white wide receiver who played for an FBS school several years ago who smoked the competition at an NFL combine in Columbus,Oh.He wasn't drafted or even given a free agent opportunity.
    I'm glad to see Danny on the practice squad.A foot back in the door.If Jim Taylor were playing now he would be a blocking back.Madison Hedgecock reminds me of Jim Taylor. The racial door swings both ways especially when it comes to black quarterbacks who are often burdened with the "athletic quarterback" label.

I picked the Jets when I was 3yo. 36 years of observing assininity is enough Ping-Pong anyone! Wait! Tennis chicks r hot! Jets go 10-6 loose first round of playoffs. Could have been a contender?

    Do you guys remember a RB named Joe Morris (Giants)? He was 5'7" also. He broke a few records back when... namely Jim Brown's rushing record at 'Cuse. I think they may have something with this kid if they can bulk him up a bit in the legs. We'll see what happens. I do agree about the WR needs, but also what about a CB? Lito Shepard is running in mud. He needs to straighten up quick or at least pop Lowery over there and release Shepard.

Research your talking points before you post here, OK? 1) Woodhead is closer to 5' 7"...he is not as tall or big as leon. 2) he is not as strong as sproles or jones-drew, and 3) he is certainly not as fast. I'll give it to him, woodhead has heart and I am a big fan of his (I was happy when he finally made the Jets team), but there was (and still is) a reason he never got recruited by and division 1 school. My advice to woodhead is for him to become a better tacklier then he'll have a shot at making the special teams.

    It is a known fact that whites are not as athletic as blacks. Like Chris Rock noted, blacks are just 12% of the population, but 95% of the final four (even ncaa bracket as a whole). Go check the nfl combine stats and nba camp stats, the white guys are getting burned!!! Look up any white guy that has been drafted in the 1st round of the nba, they ultimately never live up to expectations cos they were overrated in the first place!!!
    I'll give this to you though, white guys make better quarterback and middle linebackers!

    1 more thing, woodhead may be faster, im not sure about that, but i know for a fact have the backs you mentioned are taller than woodhead. you do realize he's only 5' 7" right? by the way, SuperDan, no way in heeellll the jets finish behind buffalo. maybe, just maybe the fins could finish ahead of the jets.

    the real reason woodhead got cut: because he's not as good as leon or jones or shonn. there would be no reason to cut him because hes white. thats a pretty ignorant statement and just because there are currently no good white running backs doesnt mean teams are being racist or stereotypical. it just happens there arent many don maynards or jim taylors left in the world.

    It is what it is.Depth at running back?Whatever.Keep telling yourself that and you will believe it someday.You'll wish for depth at running back when those overpaid primadonnas get a bruise and end up sidelined.White running backs are labeled "blocking backs or great special team players.".White receivers are labeled "possession receivers".NCAA Division 2,Division 3 and NAIA are replete with white tailbacks who did not even get a look from FBS or even FCS schools.White tailbacks are no slower,less athletic or less tougher than their black counterparts but the prevailing notion is that they are because of the racial connotation.How many times have you heard NCAA DIV 2 and 3 called SWF aka Slow White Football.Danny is the NCAA's alltime leading rusher at all levels.Don't give me that "but the competition is tougher in FBS and FCS",bull@#$%,tell that to Walter Payton or Jerry Rice.He had a great combine 2 years ago.He is bigger or faster than Leon Washington,Darren Sproles,Maurice Jones-Drew,Deangelo Williams,Dominic Rhodes,Jerome Harrison, Etc Etc Want me to keep going? So someone tell me the "real" reason/excuse why Danny was waived.What ever it may be will hold no water with me for I know the truth and I am not afraid to expose it.

    Reverse racism because a white running back was cut? So the fact that we have depth at running back doesn't matter? I liked what I saw in Woodhead also but let's be realistic and not racially charged people. We need wide receivers not more running backs!

    No!!! This reall sucks!! Woodhead showed me heart and that is what really counts..unlike other players such as John Abraham....big baby...he had no heart yet he is still in the league with Atlanta. Man I really hate to see such a talented player get cut...remember when we had Coles, Moss and Chrebet...we made the Playoffs...none of them were big....but they had heart!!!

    The Jets will regret not having Danny as the season progresses.Hopefully they will wake up
    and resign him or a team who truly appreciates hard work and talent will be lucky enough to
    sign him.

    I'd love to have seen Woodhead given a chance but truth is he was never going to play behind the other three, Jets are just too deep at RB. A trade has to be in the works hope its Clemens gone and not O'Connell, no way they keep 4 QBs for the season.
