Jets give Fireman Ed game ball from win over Pats

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP)—Fireman Ed has something new to cheer about.

The Jets’ most famous fan received a game ball from coach Rex Ryan during the team meeting Friday for helping lead a raucous Meadowlands crowd during New York’s 16-9 win over New England last Sunday.

“On behalf of the fans and representing the fans, we gave him a game ball,” Ryan said. “There’s two, actually, one in our trophy case and we gave him the other one. He does a great job.”

Ed Anzalone, a New York City firefighter, has been coming to every Jets home game for years, wearing a fire helmet and leading the “J-E-T-S! Jets! Jets! Jets!” cheer.

“That’s really the first time I’d ever seen him,” Ryan said. “When I was here before as a visitor, I kind of blocked everything out and never really noticed him. It’s hard not to notice him when you’re standing on the sideline and he’s getting the fans going and everything else.”

Ryan sent a voicemail message to season ticket holders last week, urging the fans to make things “miserable” for Tom Brady(notes) and the Patriots. The fans answered that call, and after the victory, Ryan said they were the difference in the team beating New England at the Meadowlands for the first time since 2000.

“He wasn’t the only fan you would notice, but I don’t know the names of everybody else,” Ryan said. “I’m sure there was Fireman Joe and everybody else out there. It was great because they’re our fans and we decided it was a little token of our appreciation to give him a game ball.”

Anzalone was also able to briefly address the men he cheers for.

“He was great,” Ryan said. “He was all fired up. He’s expecting a lot of wins, as are our fans, and he said this is only the start and our guys understand that.”

Anzalone, who usually wears a No. 42 Bruce Harper jersey to games, was included in the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s Hall of Fans in 1999.

“Their passion is as great as mine is,” Anzalone told the team’s Web site of Jets fans. “There’s no difference. I’m just blessed to be able to lead the orchestra, to get them crazy.”

Post 867: Normal fans Giants fans? LOL - aren't you the guys that put rocks in snowballs?

As for Fireman Ed - the guy is a tool. Typical duck - obviously hasn't seen a Sunday on the job in years, maybe decades. Game ball? LOL - I'm sure he'll sleep with it closely on the evenings in the firehouse while dreaming of being on his brothers' shoulders.

I agree with 883. Go Ed! What he did was above and beyond what other fans do, and with a bit of luck, he got an award. He didn't do it for the award though-he did it because that's what he enjoyed doing. If more people went above and beyond like Ed the world would be a much better place, so you haters think twice before you criticise and get out there and do something to get people doing something.

The simple fact is that fireman Ed has been at a lot of home games for the Jets and i've even seen him at the draft a few times and yes he does help to get the crowd pumped up with the Jets chant. I'm certainly not a Jets fan but i think that his receiving a game ball which is an honor mostly preserved for players and or coaches that none of the rets of us could possible imagine. For some of us to sit here and say well if he gets one then i should for sitting on my couch and shouting at my television when whoever beats whoever is absurd. Let the man have his fame and glory and let's just let it go.

I like this move by the Jets, this guy is at those home games no matter what the ticket prices, weathermen, or analysts say. He has to be recognized for his love for Jets football. Maybe Canton has a spot for him :p

ok for those of you who are sayin Bye Bye Brady, fools, u obviously have never played football before, not only is the man already legendary, he's won 3 superbowls, really? its going to take him a couple games for him to get the rust off, their reign is over...u people forget its the beggining of the season when teams are still trying to find themselves, how many times have we seen the eagles start the season off dismal and how many times have they made conference championship? wake up people its still the beggining of the season...not only will the patriots prolly come back against the falcons but will end up going to the playoffs, combined football iq of recent posts -100.
as for the jet fan getting the game ball, thats awesome, teams should do that more often, not often, but more often, when a fan is able to get the crowd going like that, crowd noise can be a big factor, do ur thing man
as for the rest of you....study up on ur football history
