Jones-Drew questions Jaguars offensive attack

  • Print

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP)—Still reeling from a 41-0 loss at Seattle, Jacksonville Jaguars running back Maurice Jones-Drew(notes) lashed out at the team’s play-calling, its lack of offensive identity and its constant shuffling of offensive linemen.

Frustrated? Try furious.

In a 15-minute session with reporters Wednesday, Jones-Drew ripped several aspects of his team. He even called himself the second-highest paid “decoy” in the league, behind New Orleans running back Reggie Bush(notes).

Jones-Drew acknowledged that his bitterness stemmed from the offense’s struggles and the humbling shutout in Seattle.

“I don’t like to be embarrassed, so I do get upset about it,” Jones-Drew said. “You lead by actions. You can only say so much. You can talk to somebody until you’re blue in the face and they’re not going to do anything. But if you go out there and show why you’re upset and you try to do something to correct your mistakes, then they’ll pay attention.”

Coach Jack Del Rio downplayed his star player’s discontentment.

“He’s a supreme competitor, and we really love that about him,” Del Rio said.

It was Jacksonville’s lack of competitiveness that set Jones-Drew off.

The Jaguars had seven three-and-out possessions, two fumbles and a failed fourth-down conversion on their final 10 drives against the Seahawks. David Garrard(notes) was sacked four times and fumbled twice. Jones-Drew ran 12 times for 34 yards, and added five receptions. There were dropped passes, poor throws and a season-high nine penalties for 73 yards.

“We have to figure out a way to be consistent,” Jones-Drew said. “The running game is like chess. The running game is your pawns. They don’t really mean that much in the beginning, but at the end, they surround the king and it’s check mate. That’s what the running game is.

“We’re not going to break 30-yard runs every play. You’re going to get 2, 3 yards a pop. You might get a negative run, but (defenses are) going to respect the run game and that’s going to open up the pass game and open up the run game later on, where you’re going to be breaking 10-, 15-yard chunks.”

Jones-Drew questioned the play-calling, especially when it was still a close game in the second quarter. The Jags ran Jones-Drew three straight times on first downs, then threw on every other down. Then, after Seattle went ahead 13-0 with 4:43 to play in the first half, Garrard dropped back to pass on three consecutive plays.

“It just seems like now if we don’t get 30 yards (rushing), we just go away from it,” said Jones-Drew, whose 75 carries are far less than Garrard’s 169 passes. “I’ve never been a part of a team like that.”

The Jaguars have typically been a physical, smash-mouth team that tries to run the ball no matter how many defenders are crowding the line of scrimmage. Jones-Drew and former teammate Fred Taylor(notes) formed one of the best 1-2 tandems in the league in 2006 and 2007.

That changed last year, but mostly because of line injuries. Even though Jacksonville released Taylor in February, Jones-Drew thought the offensive philosophy would remain the same. Now, he’s not sure what to make of the offense.

“I don’t know what it is. We’re still trying to figure out what our identity is right now,” Jones-Drew said. “As soon as we figure that out, I’ll gladly be able to let you guys know.”

Part of the problem might be the line. The Jaguars have used three different starting lineups the last three weeks, and have shuffled rookie tackles Eugene Monroe(notes) and Eben Britton(notes) in and out of games.

“That’s a big issue,” Jones-Drew said. “How can you get continuity, how can you get chemistry going on when guys are rotating in and out? That doesn’t happen.

“It’s like ballroom dancing. You have to be able to move one way or another at the same time, fluently, otherwise you’re going to step on her toes and she’s going to step on yours. When your left tackle and left guard have been working together all week, and they’re starting to get this chemistry buildup … then you throw a guy in or you move a guy from here to here, you’re throwing off something.”

The Jaguars definitely were out of step last week. And what they do the next three games against winless teams—St. Louis, Tennessee and Kansas City— could, at the very least, help determined the team’s direction.

“Respect is all you can gain now,” Jones-Drew said. “It’s all about the respect. It’s not even about anything else. Do they respect us as an offense? That’s the question. And right now, no one respects us. We just got blown out. We didn’t put up no points. … Who respects that? What do you think St. Louis is going to come in here and do?

“We have to go back and gain the respect of everybody in this league this week.”

Look... it's time to clear some things up for the silly, stupid, or even worse (steeler fans); the jags have a lot of new members. A few of those are known comoditys such as tory holt but a lot of them are rookies as well. The team is fundamentaly sound, it has a good coach and some great talent on the field... mojo is right in what he said and those who think he's whining can kiss my rb. Your team dosent have a player that talented period... the jags just need to get some synergy, they need to get on the same page and make things happen... what ever happened to "stop the run and run the ball"? Did that get shipped off with fred? As far as a posable moove to LA I would be furiouse... funny how a few dosen players let the fans down on rare ocasion and they get dogged in the media relentlessly but a million jacksonville residents can let the jags down every week and the team is to blame for wanting something better. No, not me, I was bourn a gator fan, I was a jacsonville bulls fan (AFL), I was a tenative jacsonville panthers fan before catolina won the bid and took the team with out even removing our state cat from the name, and now by god I'm a jags fan and have been since day 1!!! So my advise in short is... jags run the ball and hurt those who try to stop you... coaching staff, next time you want to bench good players, make horable play calls, and generaly skrew the pooch you should give lead to the team capt.'s instead and let scobie warm up on your speed bags instead. Fans go to a friggin game and while you are at it chalenge these morons and defend your team... steelers fans... STFU, big ben raipestburger rotfl

MJD is a short stocky dude who always runs and plays hard. Everyone loves that little beast. Jags just s.uck and can not find a way to use his talents.

Do guys like MJD know the history of the league. I remember when teams sent in plays by running offensive linemen in and out on every play. And those were teams that had 1,000 yard rushers in 12 and 14 game seasons, when 1,000 meant something. Where, all of a sudden, did this "chemistry" come from? Block the guy in front of you. If the players could do that consistently, there would be no issue. I realize the game has changed, as it should, but it still comes down to blaocking and tackling. That hasn't changed. MJD, you are one player in a team sport. Do your job the best you can and if you don't like your situation, ask for a trade (privately, not in the media), or utilize free agency.

for all of you saying shut up and run the ball, THATS WHAT HE IS SAYING. Adrian Peterson 12 carries a game and he would complain also. If you have one of the top 5 RB's in the game and you hand it to him 12 times, it is about coaching.

the jax jaguars is a cheap franchise. they don't go after the best players in the league becuase guess what there cheap. Get a bunch of rejects or half way decent players let them go play hard and maybe get to the play offs every other year. why didn't they go for terrell owens an offensive weapon. drew is right besides himself there really is no one else to put up the effort every single game, so jag are always going to be hit or miss

This all start with the coach (Jack del rio) , maybe we need to find a winner not a quick fix. Since he been here the team only did well with Tom Coughlin players. Once those players was ran out of town. The Del Rio project just didnt work. We need a COACH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Don't Worry MJD, You'll Be in L. A. by next season. Bigger market, maybe new coach. You'll get your time to shine. I'm a Steelers Fan and I still think that MJD is one of the best backs in the league. Of course maybe they are trying to lose the rest of the season. They did say they were looking at drafting Tebow. So if they lose the rest of their games they will have a better chance at that. Tebow isn't an NFL QB, sorry, but maybe him MJD and Garrard can all line up in the backfield. They'll call it the SuperCat and hand it off to MJD, keep it, or throw it to each other ( because they have no recievers, besides ones that can't sleep). Curfew? get real JDR. You're here to win games not to improve college kids moral values. what a joke.

@ 151 & 160 JON. your right Fred Taylor sucked? My point is that this crap of a team Jags needs a tandem. They have one star player MJD and every team knows it. Most teams have at least something in their bag. Jags are aweful. That is why the Jags will probably be moving. They remind me of the Raiders. Hanging on to a pitiful quarterback,,,, bad descisions all the way around.

Shirley post #170 that is the funniest hting i have ever heard ... rams beat the jags this week. Jax will win by 2 touchdowns ... take that to the bank. MJD will rush for over 100 and score 2 td's himself.

They have no QB so a good running game will open up nothing. He is there best bet at scoring even if there are 8 in the box.

    Jags keys to winning-

Hand it to Drew and watch him run. While the DEF is out there giving up 41points make phone calls to QB's looking for jobs.

Sorry but no sympathy here for a pro athlete who want's to complain, there could be far worse things for him to be worried about.

Maybe he could take some of the millions he is making and buy his own team and he could run it how he see's fit, until then if he doesn't like it where he is at, he can always seek a trade or he can quit.

Suck it up and play Drew, last time I checked you were not exactly tearing up rushing records at an alarming rate.

At least he is passionate about something! I watch JDR on the sidelines who looks more concerned with how his hair looks rather than getting pizzed off and letting a little emotion out on his players. Its hard to believe but Coughlin, (Mr. A type personality), showed way more emotion than Jack. He needs to chew some ass in public and maybe humiliate his players into trying harder. As for MDJ...he's right!
