Jaguars counting on improvement from QB Garrard

  • Print

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP)—The Jacksonville Jaguars took away David Garrard’s(notes) radio show early in the season, then stripped him of the authority to audible Sunday.

What’s next? His starting job?

Not quite. The Jaguars (3-4) have made it clear they need Garrard to play better to have a chance to compete on a consistent basis.

Garrard has no touchdown passes, four interceptions and two fumbles in the last three games. He also has been sacked 10 times in that span behind a shaky line. The Jaguars, who have lost two of three, face Kansas City (1-6) on Sunday.

“They can’t look over here and say, ‘Well, this team is firing on all cylinders,”’ Garrard said Wednesday. “We have to be able to execute. In the NFL, whoever you’re playing, you’ve got to go out and execute and make the plays necessary.”

The Jaguars have struggled to execute in several games this season, especially in Sunday’s 30-13 loss at Tennessee.

The Titans stacked the line of scrimmage in hopes of getting Garrard to audible from runs to passes—something that worked in Jacksonville’s favor in their first meeting. Garrard threw for 323 yards and three touchdowns in a 37-17 victory in early October.

This time, Tennessee played press coverage on receivers Torry Holt(notes) and Mike Sims-Walker(notes) and took away the quick slants that were so effective in the previous game. The Titans essentially dared Garrard to beat them deep.

The result? He completed 14 of 28 passes for 139 yards, threw two interceptions, was sacked three times and hurried way more often.

“We’ve just got to do better as a team, period,” Garrard said. “No matter what a defense does against us, we have to still be able to execute our game plan and go down and score points.”

With Garrard struggling, coaches told him to stop checking out of run plays to Maurice Jones-Drew(notes)—no matter how many Titans were near the line.

“We took that privilege away or that ability away and said, ‘Look, just hand it to him and let him run the ball,”’ said coach Jack Del Rio, who added that Garrard will get his authority to audible back this week against the Chiefs.

Jones-Drew didn’t carry the ball until Jacksonville’s fourth series. He took a pitch and went 80 yards for a touchdown. He also ran 79 yards on the team’s first play of the second half, but he ran just eight times in the game and still finished with a career-high 177 yards.

Jones-Drew, who complained about not getting the ball enough following a 41-0 loss at Seattle last month, stopped short of doing the same this week.

“Hopefully we have a chance where we can run the ball a little bit and be a balanced offense by throwing the ball effectively,” Jones-Drew said. “I just want to win. Whatever it takes to win. Obviously, we didn’t win last week so we’ve got to figure out a way to execute and find ways to win.”

It starts with getting more from Garrard, who signed a six-year, $60 million contract extension after the 2007 season that included $18 million guaranteed.

He threw 15 TD passes and 13 interceptions in 2008, and has five TD passes and five INTs this year. He hasn’t thrown a touchdown pass in five of the team’s seven games.

Del Rio told Garrard to give up his weekly radio show in late September after learning that the quarterback was talking about things unrelated to the next opponent two days before games.

Garrard downplayed the decision at the time. He did the same with Del Rio’s move to take away his pre-snap calls.

“It wasn’t taking audibles and the game plan out of my hand,” Garrard said. “It was, ‘They’re defending this well this time and we need to just try to force the ball to him.’ When we started to do that, you saw that we were getting some pretty good chunks. It was just an adjustment. It wasn’t, ‘Let’s take things from Dave.”’

i say the jags look to draft a qb in the of season and go for a wr right away and not wait so long like they did this past year. i fear del rio is on a hot seat but time will tell.

Taletha there is nothing hotter than a good looking woman that loves sports ;).. That said.. REALLY? Leftwich better than Garrard? Please look at the stats.. Leftwich had one good year.. (And had Jimmy Smith to throw to I might add.. ) then he ripped up his ankle (The same one that he tore up in College) after surgery he went from slow in the pocket to damn near immobile. In 2007 Garrard had a season with 3 interceptions and a 102.7 passer rating for the SEASON. Followed by the 2008 season where the O-line was missing most its starters.. and not one of last years starting WRs is playing now.. and the ones that were cut were not even picked up practice squads for other teams. This that might say a bit about how "good" the Jag WRs were. All "Great" QBs have good if not great Olines and at least a few WRs to pass too. As our O-line and young WR corps (Holt an exception) mature and stay healthy, you will see Garrard return to 2007 form. Hes a great QB and a great guy.. people have to realize he is only ONE player. Last year he had over 8 passes dropped near or in the End zone, and over half his INTS last year were drops or tips by the WR, and thats when he wasn't sacked.. He only throws the ball he needs protection and WRs that can catch and not fumble the ball. We have that now.. but they have to gel, and I think we saw that last week in Houston.

    Mr Logic

I have never dated outside of my race due to my religous convictions. It is something I would not do - though others are free to do so.

Guys - White, Black, Mexican, Asian, Indians - look at girls like me for only one thing. Long legs. Big boobs. Round ass. Hopefully zero morals

We girls have to look out for our interests, too!

That said, David Garrard is still a mediocre quarterback. Byron Leftwich was far more effective as the Jaguars starting quarterback - but that's only my opinion.

Perception is reality but athletes are people too. to take a man's show because he must be totally focused on football at the end if the week is such an archiac idea. no wonder folks are suprised when players can string 2 sentences together.i love the player jack was but the coach is a bust he needs to get out of j'ville and connect with the real world.maybe go work for pete carroll or joe pa, see how the feel about players having lives.

Ok so if you ran a team with all the money behind the decisions you make, what would your decision be? It is hard to jump on the coach when he is trying to be direct and say hey buddy; we only get so many chances, and you really need to focus on this, hell they both do, considering Jacksonville and their current record. You either are succeeding or you are part of what they are going to change.

Or you accept the alternative argument, this could be a control issue that the coach has about having his palyers do it his way or leave town similar to I dare say Mike Peterson (former lb who now plays at Atlanta).

Either way I don't see Del Rio being that guy who is hateful or racist. He was hard nosed player and appears to be that way as a coach.

The business decisions were made via contract to hold down people from making too many decisions that may be public relations bombs later. Pr may not matter to you and I as everyday people, but huge teams have to worry about where the money comes from and not pissing us off.

Look at twitter.... people don't have too much longer before sports will censor their employees about their remarks whether they are foolish, naive, or ignorant, or even if it is factually true and still delivers an injury to perception of an organization.

One job I do not want, would be as a coach in today's sports. Constant questioning, criticism, and having to deal with the trends of big business puts you at the short end of the stick to begin with.
