Another Jaguars home game blacked out

  • Print

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP)—The Jacksonville Jaguars have failed to sell out a home game for the fourth time this season.

Sunday’s game against Kansas City (1-6) will not be televised in Jacksonville or in secondary markets that include Gainesville, Daytona Beach, Orlando and Savannah, Ga.

The Jaguars (3-4) set a franchise low for attendance (42,088) in their last home game, Oct. 18 against St. Louis. This one could break the mark.

Jaguars owner Wayne Weaver has made it clear the small-market franchise doesn’t anticipate selling out any home games in 2009, although team officials hope they might avoid a blackout when Indianapolis visits Dec. 17.

About 17,000 fans opted not to renew their season tickets this year, many citing the economic climate.

Part of the Jags problem is complete lack of marketing in outer markets. I live in Savannah and we don't even have a radio station that carries the games. Have never seen a single advertisement or billboard for them. I was a season ticket holder for the first 9 years and loved going to the games, but economically it didn't make sense to keep the tickets because I could always drive down on game day and pick up tickets for less the face value, even when the team was winning.

Call me a bleeding heart but I think the Jaguars should stay right where they are. They've had little national exposure and when they were "up and coming" they still never received the attention they deserved. Small market, yes but if Mr. Weaver doesn't want the team he should try and sell it. There are plenty of people who like the Jags and want them to stay. I live in Detroit and would gladly take them over the 50-year drought we've had to put up with!

I don't give this team 3 more years in Jacksonville. The team seems to be in major disarray, a disgruntled fan base, no stadium naming rights deal, and not making progress despite having fairly good draft positioning and free agent signings over the past few years. I can't see Mr. Weaver sinking his money into this money-pit for four or more years while they try to dig their way out of this morass via the draft, trades, and free agency, particularly given the club's HORRIBLE performance in those areas.

Other than LA, what major metro area is begging for a franchise? San Antonio, maybe. LA has already screwed up with the Rams and Raiders. An NFL team would have to compete with USC and UCLA - which have RABID fan followings, but only based on local affiliation, i.e., school graduates or "bandwagon" fans of those successful college teams. LA is too foo-foo for NFL footballs. They have no stadium that's ready to go for a current-day NFL franchise - the sky boxes, luxury suites, and all that stuff. So - where would the Jax, Cleveland, Cincinnatti, and Buffalo franchises go? As long as this downer economy continues, no team is going to incur the costs of moving their operations - not just the midnight moving vans (a la Robert Irsay's notorious midnight move from Baltimore to Indy), but also the contract buyouts associated with the city, services, and all sorts of other stuff. LA won't get a franchise until the potential ownership commits to a new stadium, which will take two years to build AFTER all of the funding and political stuff with the local city councils.

Hey jeff S: You are 100% corrrect. The NFL needs to evaluate all franchises and move the ones out of Cleveland, Cincinnitti, Buffalo, and Jacksonville to other metropolitan areas.
