NFL fines Jets, Mangini for Favre coverup

  • Print

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP)—The NFL assessed $125,000 in fines to the New York Jets and former coach Eric Mangini on Wednesday for violating the league’s rules on injury reporting with former quarterback Brett Favre(notes) last season.

The Jets failed to place Favre, now with the Minnesota Vikings, on the injury report during the final month of last season even though he had a torn biceps tendon.

The league announced it had fined the Jets $75,000, and Mangini and Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum $25,000 apiece. Mangini now coaches the Cleveland Browns.

“We have been fully cooperative with the league throughout this investigation and respect their decision,” the Jets said in a statement.

Mangini wants to put the situation behind him.

“I have worked with the league on this matter and now consider it closed,” he said in a statement. “My focus is on our preparations for the Broncos.”

Hiding injuries could affect an opponent’s preparation and the NFL has stepped up policing such practices. Commissioner Roger Goodell said Monday that the case would be an opportunity for the league to stress that all teams must abide by the injury report rules.

Last week, Tannenbaum admitted the Jets should have listed Favre as “probable” on their injury reports. That came a day after Favre said he thought he was hurting the Jets because of the injury and discussed it with the coaches and the front office. He said he would have been willing to sit out, even though that would have ended his streak of consecutive starts, which now stands at 270 games.

Tannenbaum said the team didn’t list Favre on the report because the injury wasn’t severe enough to require daily treatment and there was never any doubt Favre would play. Tannenbaum also assumed full responsibility for the mistake.

Mangini said he has always abided by the league’s guidelines for injury reports.

“That was true there (in New York). It’s true here,” Mangini said. “It’ll be true every week of the season and that’s how we approach it.”

Favre led the Jets to an 8-3 start and first place in the AFC East. But he threw nine interceptions down the stretch and the team lost four of its last five, missing the playoffs.

He retired after the season, and was later released by the Jets. Favre came out of retirement—for the second time—last month and signed with Minnesota.

Favre told reporters last week he may not be able to play all 16 games with the Vikings, even after the biceps tendon was surgically repaired. He said he’s playing with a torn rotator cuff and suggested he might have a cracked rib.

Favre completed 14 of 21 passes for 110 yards and a touchdown in the Vikings’ season-opening 34-20 win over Mangini’s Browns on Sunday.

AP Sports Writers Dave Campbell in Eden Prairie, Minn., and Tom Withers in Berea, Ohio, contributed to this report.

Again with the "cleveland is a ratthole"...from common sense. He claims to hate the city so much, but he is on EVERY and I mean EVERY browns article on yahoo. Who are you trying to kid, its obvious you are into the browns. As much as you refer to Michael Jackson, I think you are in to him as well (or maybe he was in to you) .

Will someone get in touch with the web poster and get these moron articles about the Cleveland Browns off the web. My gosh, the amount of attention given to this freakin loser franchise, city and dead beat owner is astounding. Post articles about Michael Jackson, or toenail fungus. They are more interesting anything that could ever be written about Cleveland.

Mangini is a snake!!!! This guy cry foul on the Patriots and he's doing this crap. He's probably responsible for I SPY on you and other teams to win with hi tech video footage. The punishment wasn't wasn't harsh enough. He should get the same punishment that the patriots received. $500,000 fine and no first round draft.
Double standards for certain teams and coaches

Fined for not listing Favre as 'probable'?

Ridiculous, everyone knows Favre would be ready to play with two broken legs, this man can not be stopped.

    Toughest player in NFL history.

Pats fans, rejoice!! You are off the hook for Spygate because although everyone in the world knew that Favre was injured last season for the last five games, him not being listed on the injury report 'gave the Jets an advantage.' Please, tell me that them losing 4 of the last 5 games of the season shows they had 'an advantage.' Missing out on the playoffs because they started an injured Favre who played like crap. Glad I am neither a Jets or a Pats fan, but more-so not a Pats fan. I don't think I could deal with having to sit and wait for another team to cheat in a similar manner as Belicheck did. The spotlight will remain on the Pats organization until this happens. And so far, two seasons have passed, and no such luck. The Pats have a good team and a good coach, but this spying deal has forever tainted them, like Marion Jones and her gold medals from Sydney, which she had to return. You should thank the NFL for not making the Pats remove the SB Champ streamers from their rafters and pulling their wins from the record book.

No. 278. I don't blame or hate Farve. He should take the money. But to interrupt training camp to fly him in on a personal plane and provide a limousine escort to the practice facility says a lot to the other quarterbacks and players.

Even TBrady or either of the Manning boys do not get that kind of treatment.

I personally thinks he enjoys sucking all the oxy from everyone else.

One thing that everyone can agree with is that the Minnesota/Packers match ups will probably break all kind of ratings records.

Football Diva, you don't have to be "attracted" to Favre. I just don't get where all the hate is coming from. And as for his destructiveness, seriously, if an organization pays you $12 million to join them, do they do it because you will be a "destructive influence?" You want destrucitve influence, I give you Ted Thompson, who has caused nothing but misery in his tenure as Packers GM. Nonetheless, I do not wish him injury or death. I will simply ignore him unti he goes away. Which he will. As will Brett. So get over it.

Okay drummer, so Favre's me-first attitude (which is what you are giving a pass to in terms of his egotism) is fine with you and others who defend, and, since he has chosen to be a high-profile figure, it's going to rub others the wrong way; hence, the criticism. I don't see what the problem is.

the bad part about Belichek is, by listing Brady as probable every week, every team knows that he's playing. There is now mystery to it anymore. As far as Favre goes, he was probably told to keep his mouth shout and thats what he did. Unless you're an insider noone willl ever know what went on. Obvioulsy the Jets didn't have enough confidence in their backup say the lied or what ever you want to call it so he could play! did it get them anywhere? no but they probably figured it was worth the consequence.

The content of Cody's comment is perfectly clear to me. This entire bashfest against Favre, who at worst is egotistical (as are all successful athletes), and at best simply loves to play the game, is pointless.

When people post that they want the man injured or maimed playing football, they show the level of their own evolution - knuckles scraping the dirt as they lurch through the jungle.

Eh, I hope Favre goes 2200 yards, 12 touchdowns, 12 interceptions this season for the vikes, and Adrian Peterson jukes and stiff arms every opposing team into submission for a super bowl championship.

Because thats what Favre deserves for giving us nearly 2 decades of memorable highlights, not all you haters making assumptions about the character of a person you don't know anything about.

I am so sick of his making excuses for the way he playes. oh my ribs hurt, equates to if we lose I can blame it on my ribs. The "I don;t know if I can play 16 games actullay means. If I am playing poorly then I will retire again during the season. Favre has you all snowed and I bet the JETS rue the day they ever brought that Diva to their organization..... Just the the Vikings will......hahahahah

I just can't understand why so many want to open their mouth to show us that they have no brains! Just about every negative remark about Favre proves that these so called fans of the game have no idea what is going on. Unfortunately we have to endure their ridiculous opinionated banter. Of course, the frieghtening part is that these people can procreate and spawn more imbiciles to water down the gene pool. Oh Wait, since most women are generally more intelligent perhaps they will look into the cavernous waste land and think before allowing them the opportunity to perform the exotic ritual! We can only hope and pray!!!

    1) The idea of helping gamblers is speculation, it's the "Oh come on" excuse that you disallow for others except when it benefits you. Either you take a zero tolerance approach for rule violations or your take a de facto "real world" speculative approach, but to switch back on forth on who gets to cheat and who doesn't depending on which team(s) you like is hypocritical.

    2) Rachel. Favre has made his part in this the issue by coming out with this after the fact. He abided by the coaches' decisions, claimed he wasn't injured, and now a year out, he changes his story to excuse the black mark of his poor play. Another example of wanting it both ways; either you're too hurt to play and sit or abide by your decision, but playing fast and loose with the facts depending on when and how it suits you is becoming Favre's modus operandi.

The injury report serves no purpose for the injured players who are on it. The only people who benefit from it are gamblers, bookies, and the OPPONENTS of the injured players. I don't blame them for not listing his injuries, had his opponents known he had a torn biceps tendon they would have targeted the injury on EVERY play. Why would you want the other team to know exactly where your best players are injured? Of course there is a way around listing the injuries and getting fined... just do what Bill Belichick does every week with Tom Brady!! Brady has been on the injury list every week for years as probable with a "shoulder." So just list your players as probable with a bogus injury every week and nobody will suspect you're hiding a real injury!! Just another example of why Belichick is the best head coach in the game... although certainly not the most honest or rule abiding!
