Falcons’ Matt Ryan to Mount Rushmore?

  • Print

FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. (AP)—So, Matt Ryan(notes), how does it feel to have an almost perfectly symmetrical face?

“I’m not sure,” the Falcons’ quarterback said Tuesday. “I have no idea what that is, but my teammates kind of brought it to my attention, so I’ve heard about it from a number of guys.”

For all the honors Ryan received as a rookie last year, none is less tangible than the results of a study published last week by The Wall Street Journal.

It seems Ryan’s face, at 99.8 percent, is the most symmetrical in the NFL. According to results of a study between Southern Utah University and Ursinus (Pa.) College, Ryan is the league’s most handsome leader simply because his face has traits that show “a strong correlation to a person’s perceived attractiveness.”

Say what?

“I keep telling my teammates it’s from a credible source,” Ryan said of the persistent teasing he’s heard in the locker room. “So it’s all good.”

Ryan’s first brush as a big-time celebrity came during the draft 17 months ago. A couple of months ago, he was the “best breakthrough athlete” at ESPN’s annual award ceremony.

Success on the field, however, backed up the Falcons’ decision to pick him No. 3 overall; Ryan was named the league’s offensive rookie of the year.

Atlanta, coming off a 4-12 season that included quarterback Michael Vick’s(notes) imprisonment and coach Bobby Petrino’s resignation, was hardly expected to compete in the NFC South. Yet the Falcons won 11 games and earned a wild-card playoff spot as Ryan’s star continued to rise.

The NFL’s offensive rookie of the year, already armed by the Falcons with a six-year, $72 million contract, signed an endorsement deal with AirTran and settled in his new estate home at Sugarloaf Country Club about 30 minutes south of team headquarters.

He likes golf, hunting, fishing and video games, but prefers keeping matters like girlfriends and other personal relationships private.

That approach was the opposite taken by Vick, the Falcons’ previous franchise cornerstone whose dogfighting scandal created national public outrage.

Ryan, a former Boston College standout who grew up in suburban Philadelphia and graduated from William Penn Charter School, enjoys a lifestyle that’s luxurious yet tastefully restrained.

He doesn’t know exactly how New England’s Tom Brady(notes) or Dallas’ Tony Romo(notes) manage their quarterback careers while dating models and dodging the paparazzi, but Ryan sounds as if he prefers a lower profile.

“If you do let yourself get caught up in that, it is very easy to lose focus on what it takes to kind of get to those things,” he said. “For me, my family does a good job of keeping me in check, but even though were a lot of successful things and lot of cool things and great experiences, you know, I want more. And as a team, I think everybody wants more.”

When Atlanta hosts Baltimore in the final exhibition for both teams on Thursday, Ryan might play a couple of series—or might not take a snap. Coach Mike Smith(notes) and his staff had yet to decide following practice Tuesday, although Ryan wasn’t terribly concerned.

The fourth preseason game for all NFL teams routinely involves mostly reserves.

Ryan’s focus instead is on leading the Falcons, who lost their only Super Bowl appearance to close the 1998 season, deep into the playoffs. Last year, they didn’t make it past the first round, losing 30-24 at Arizona.

Atlanta receiver Roddy White(notes) thinks the best is yet to come for Ryan, who reads coverages quickly and usually makes the right decision after the ball is snapped.

Passes came out of the pocket fast enough last season that Ryan was sacked just 17 times, 30 fewer than the Falcons allowed in 2007. He ran no-huddle formations with ease, ranked No. 3 in net passing yards per attempt and helped Atlanta finish the season ranked sixth in third-down efficiency.

It was no coincidence that White had a career-best season and was named to the Pro Bowl.

“Yeah, man, everything he does is off anticipation,” White said. “He’s a great defensive reader guy, man. He reads it and he knows where to go with the ball, and it’s on time, man.”

Working with Ryan on pressure situations, White led the NFL in third-down catches.

“Running a route with Matt, the ball is always in a place that’s catchable, and if you’re one yard short of the first down, it’s always in a place where you can get upfield and get that first down,” White said. “He’s improved so much from year one to year two, man, that he’s going to be great.”

Ryan seems unwilling to take such forecasts for granted.

It’s all talk to him, even if he does sport a face that’s nearly perfectly symmetrical.

“That’s really the motivation to not get caught up in all that stuff because when you think about it, we really haven’t accomplished anything,” Ryan said. “We got to the playoffs, which is a great thing, but our expectations for ourselves are bigger than that.”

Even though this blog is not about Vick, we all knew it would go there. Post 69 was just crazy. Charlie Batch??? Jason Cambell??? Byron Leftwich??? All better than Vick...Say no to drugs! Vick is 2-2 in playoff appearances(with a mediocre team), so some wins were involved somewhere. And yes, Matt Ryan is working with the same WR's that Vick had. But a true Falcons fan knows that R White and M Jenkins were not half of the talent that they show today. And no, W Dunn and Duckett were not scrubs...but the OLine was suspect and so were the WR's(Hence the reason 8 stayed in the box) Vick accomplished great things for a guy who can't throw accurately enough to please you people. But he won games despite 3 coaches, different offensive schemes and a mediocre team. He didn't have the luxury of a Mike Smith, Comrade TD, Mike Mullarky, Mike Turner and the Pro Bowl caliber R White that Matt Ryan has today. Im not taking anything from Ryan, because he IS a beast. A young QB who did 4 years in college and has a high football IQ. I wouldn't take nobody over him because of his age and skill set. But he do have a GREAT TEAM around him. (WAY better than Vick ever had) Now I know Vick did horrible things that will never be forgivable to most of you, but give the man some credit. He's a great athlete(decent QB) but he is a winner. He's in a great situation with the eagles right now and everybody loves a winner. If he help the eagles win the ring, things will get better for him. I want to see him do good. But I am and will always be a Falcons fan(Winning and losing seasons)......I hope we don't meet the eagles in the playoffs.

Can we please quit talking about Mike Vick? He paid his debt to society and I wish him well where ever he goes the NFL, CFL, European Football League or the AKC circuit. And to all you misguided Falcon fans could you please retire your Mike Vick jerseys? It's bad enough that adults still sport the number seven jerseys but don't let your children wear them. What kind of message are you sending your kids? That it's okay to knowingly give a woman herpes and front a dog fighting ring (I could care less about the alleged marijuana incident at the airport)? If you need a role model look no further than Donovan McNabb or Lebron James? Two gifted athletes that conduct themselves professionally on and off the court. The latter even has gangsta' tats to help bolster his street cred'.

for the record, matt is better than flacco. flacco didn't throw the ball deep and was playing a mark brunell type game when brunell played in his last starting season as a redskins. M R is well rounded and an excellent learner and shows great work ethics. this kid deserves the credit and will show us next year what he has to show. if he doesn't do well this year, he'll just hit the film room even more and get better the next year. so in all, he'll just get better and better and better

    Hey T-Bone,
You asked who the wideouts were with Vick, Roddy White,Mike Jenkins and Brian Finneran. Basically the same wr corps as Matt Ryan. As far as a running game, Warrick Dunn and Tj Duckett were bums???
If you wanna rep Vick then fine but don't make generalizations that don't take facts into account.

Im not going to say we're going to the playoffs or that we will be 13-3 because anything can happen from now until the first game against miami. but i like what we have and im very excited about this season. our offense has everything in place to be really hard to stop. we're gonna need it, especially having the 4th hardest schedule this year. our defense is another story. i like our d-line with abraham, babineaux, and the rookie jerry. im hoping this is the year that anderson comes out of his shell and becomes the beast he was in college. our lb's look strong also. lofton will be even better this year and nicholas should get the starting job on the other side of peterson, who will be a very good leader for us. our secondary worries me though. thats the big question this year.our secondary. hopefully our defense comes together quick because we haqve a very tough year coming, but im excited and very confident about our team. go falcons!!!!

Not only did the Falcons pick up Tony Gonzalez, they also picked up probowl and veteran help to add depth to the O-line. If Ryan continues to get smarter look out, because he's going to have longer time to sit in the pocket and he's going to have new targets to throw to up the middle. Now if our D can improve to one of the top 10 defenses in the league, we will win a super bowl.

Kappa P- I appreciate your cheering, but don't wave those pom-poms just yet!! You mentioned consistency. I understand there have been some dynasties throughout the years, however, who is really CONSISTENT in the NFL??? You have the Packers of the 60's, Steelers of the 70's, 49er's of the 80's, Cowboys of the 90's, and Patriots of this decade. Before 2001 Pat's had only gone to 2 SB's (and lost both) in franchise history. Cowboys can't even win a playoff game anymore, and the 49er's are a joke! The only CONSISTENT team throughout the years have been the Steelers. Pittsburgh fans have overall been able to hold their heads high come football season. Other than that, no one is consistent. Next, you speak of my emotion. I am a Falcons fan, however, I am certainly not an EMOTIONAL religious season ticket holder with wings and black and red face paint, no no no!!!......I am a bigger much fan of the NFL!!...... We all know many teams (like the Falcons, Lions, Bengals, etc.) have never had that dynasty like so many other teams have had. If you look at where these teams were before and after their dynasty (excluding the Steelers) you'll notice that none of them were consistent. All im saying is that there are alot of teams that you would not expect to be at .500 surprising alot of people. There is a new decade coming, and history will show, that with a new decade brings a new dynasty. I'm actually excited to see how the Lions incorporate their new changes this year! Just don't be surprised if one of these "black sheep" step it up in the new decade! As far as the riggamaroe about tape on the QB's, sure, everyone has tape. It doesnt matter what kind of tape you have, if a QB is great, then they are great, no matter what tape teams can use against them. Now whether these rookies like Matt Ryan or Joe Flacco is great, that is to be determined. If they have something special that most QB's dont have, then no amount of tape will matter . Teams had tape on Montana, Marino, Brady, etc. it may help, but ultimately, it doesnt matter. So bless your heart Kappa P, its should be an exciting season!!!!

MICHAEL VICK? MICHAEL VICK? Dude you just splashed into a new realm of stupidity... I want to be in your fantasy football league. Michael Vick NEVER, I repeat NEVER came close to being the quarterback that Matt Ryan has become. He has proven time and time again he is a fast gang banger who has just enough talent to throw the ball. He sucks and will always suck balls. Please dont ever insult M.R. again by putting his name in the same sentance as M.V... You freaking loser!

TC..McNabb was a very good rushing QB early in his career, but he was never that accurate with the ball early in his career...However, when his legs began to fail him...he did become a much better passer....He doesnt run that much anymore; buecausehe knows he cant take a hit...He has been able to move from a 52% passer to a 58% passer; but that is still not that good when you consider they run the WC offense; which consists of a lot of short passes...But I will admit that if Vick can become a bit more like McNabb....then Vick could be a much better version of Ben Rothlesberger...The NFL doesnt need or want a QB to run the ball...they just want a QB that can sit in the pocket for the 4 secs it takes for those down the field plays to develop and then make the pass...if the play is not there...then move around just enough to make the short pass to keep the chains moving...I like Vick, but can you imagine what type of QB he would be if he had someone like Moss, Burress, Fitsgerald, or Calvin Johnson to throw to down the field...Damn, he would be incredible...

Kappa P, I disagree with you on McNabb. He was a combo qb, able to pass and run if the play broke down. He's always had a good arm, the legs made him even better than a romo, ben, or cutler.

Brian....no disrespect...Vick is a tremendous athlete...but there is a difference between a mobile QB and a rushing QB...A mobile QB is Ben, Romo, Cutler...these are guys that are reluctant to run and will move around in the pocket...but continue to look down the field...Vick is a rushing Qb...like Young, McNabb (old), and Garrad...in that when the play breaks down...they take off RUNNING...A mobile QB is generally a good passer...a rushing QB is generally not as accuarate...because they rely on their natural talent; which is out running D-Linemen....Vick will play in the league...he will be reinstated...and a team will sign him by the 2nd week of Training Camp...but he wont be a starter this year...but he will battle for a starting job next season...and I believe he can contribute to a team...There is no way that any sports fan can expect me to believe that out of 32 teams in the NFL...that there are 32 QBs better than Vick...lol

I think Michael "The Burner" Turner is what really turned this team around. That guy was awesome last year, in his first year as a starting runningback. Don't get me wrong Matt Ryan is an excellent game manager and solid QB but Turner had as good a season at runningback as you could have.

I am not a Vick fan...but I do respect his talents....He is not the best QB in the league but he is certainly better than 20 of the QBs playing...I mean be honest, who would you want, Vick or Orten...lol....I think as Vick gets older and as his speed and quickness begin to decrease, he will become a better QB...The same happened to McNabb, when you are faster and more mobile than the people chasing you...its natural for you to use your legs...I mean, Shaq is a beat in the paint, so do you expect him to shoot jump shots or to use his size?? Vick is a mobile QB so it makes sense for him to use his feet to make plays...and he does that at an All-Pro level....But at the NFL level, you have to be able sit in the pocket and make the pass...and if you leave the pocket, you have to be accurate with your passes...Vick struggles with being accurate with the short yardage passes...If he were a bit more accurate, he would be a faster version of Ben Rothlesberger...lol

Kevin....I cheer your support of a franchise that has never been consistent throughout its entire creation....except for being consistenly underachieving...Look, I understand how exciting it had to be for Falcon fans to experience a year like they did last year...considering how much negative pub they were receiving from the Vick and Petrino deal...But please, lets use football logic and not emotional favor; when evaluating their options...I saw Ryan play for 4yrs in college and believe him to be a capable QB...but no one expected him to have the year he did last year...not even the coaches..A lot of things went in their favor....A rookie QB that no one had film no....a rookie coach no one had a feel for and a very soft out of conference schedule...Come on now...the same thing happened to Miami and Baltimore...and lets be honest...does anyone expect Mia or Baltimore to be as successful as they were a year ago? The Falcons have to play the NFC South and Philly, Giants, and the Cowboys al had a chance to go to the playoffs...The Falcons will be lucky to win 8 games this year....and Ryan, bless his heart, will suffer the fate of all 2nd year QBs..
