Doctors: Eagles RB Westbrook has improved

  • Print

PITTSBURGH (AP)—Philadelphia Eagles running back Brian Westbrook(notes) has improved significantly since Sunday when he sustained a second concussion in a three-week span, doctors said Wednesday.

Westbrook was evaluated Wednesday at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and underwent a battery of neuro-cognitive tests, according to a statement released jointly by the Eagles and the hospital. He also had a comprehensive physical and neurological exam that showed favorable results.

Dr. Joseph Maroon and Dr. Michael Collins, who are sports concussion specialists, said they plan to repeat the tests in two to three weeks.

Westbrook sustained a concussion on Oct. 26 in a game against Washington. He sat out for two weeks and then was reinjured Sunday during his return to the lineup at San Diego.

Westbrook won’t play this Sunday at Chicago against the Bears, and it’s unknown if he’ll return at all this season.

Like 357 said, I totally agree...how can you make significant strides in 4 days, from having suffered two concussions over a month? I suffered from serious concussion after a car accident-where I wasn't even struck directly on the head, but was knocked out on impact and then hit my head as the car tumbled hitting other cars. All my tests were normal, all the MRI's and other things were normal...yet the doctors could not explain why or how had difficulty with my short-term memory, suffered severe migraines (whereas normally I never get a headache), would have serious moments of feeling faint, severe moments of feeling terribly weak. I kept going back to the doctors-they all said the same thing "your brain scans are normal" and "you've passed all the tests."

Brian Westbrook did not just get a concussion, he was knocked out cold. He wasn't just suffering from the minor concussion from a blow on the head, he lost consciousness. I'm a die hard Eagles fan, but I have to agree there is absolutely no way he suits up in the regular season. I would say that at a minimum he needs the next 7-9 weeks. He can run in practice, he can stay in football shape, in fact, long-term, it is beneficial for him to do so. I think that placing him on IR would be a mistake long-term to his playing career, if he were to resume it, and I think right now-it isn't even a question to think about. But by allowing him to stay in football shape, practice, run his routes, and all those things, a measure of his coinfidence will still be place, he will then be able to really tell where he is, how he is doing, if the symptoms are coming back.

However, it should be made clear to him that the earliest he would be allowed to return under any circumstance, would be the playoffs, and that such a "return" is not guaranteed, promised or assured. I'm not saying this to string him along-but I think that by telling him he can't play the rest of the reason, and that he might be allowed to return in the post season gets his mind of trying to rush-allows him to focus on not just getting his full strength back, but to make honest assessments about where he is while practicing in all the team drills(non-contact drills, only, of course).

Any return by Westbrook in the playoffs -I'd only allow that after seeing him in some contact drills. I can't argue with placing him on IR in prinicple, but right now, I think the main thing is to realize that regular season for him is out of the question, and that he needs to focus these next two months on his health and practices, along with the memorization of the plays and all the homework...tape, etc. He's a smart guy, so lets see how he is doing on those levels, how his brain is functioning in the watching of the game film, breakdowns, etc. He is certainly an asset to the team as a team leader, assisting the coaches, motivating, etc. Once he is placed on IR, he isn't going to get any physical level of activity at all. And one of the major things with a severe concussion is that if the symptoms are NOT disappearing and you are NOT improving-then you will NOT be able to perform physically in the drills, route running, etc. Better for him to see that now, if that's the case, and better for the team to have the chance to make that sort of objective assessment, without risk, now, than saying "come back next year."

My symptoms, including the short-term memory loss, did clear up eventually(which was a blessing!), but it took more than a few weeks, it took closer to a few months for serious improvement.

    @ tomahawk...

I am starting to feel bad about our disagreeing on game stuff with you, but then, I remember that we cheer for different teams. We do not troll talk each other. It is all good.

I read a post like 365, and I know he represents himself only. There are some ignorant Philedelphia fans, and there some ignorant fans in basically every city.

I would like to think that legitmate football fans, baseball fans, basketball fans, and even hockey fans would put the health and well being of an individual ahead of a game that is only played for its entertainment value to sell beer, Viagra, and tampons. There is the competition on the field, but that is sort of getting lost behind fools like 365 posting and all the troll talk.

We normally quit playing a game when someone got hurt as kids. Had to get him home to his mom and dad.

You are right though that he just be put on IR. Maybe he heals over the winter, or maybe he looks at his kids and says that he wants to be there for them and hangs up his cleats.

2 concussions in a month's span is bad news for any athlete, or anybody for that matter! BW's situation should be handled with kid gloves. Would hate to see him, or anyone end up like Kyle Turley. I'm sure his health after football has also been taken into consideration. Hey, he could make a great living as a running backs coach.

Westbrook needs to retire for his own health, he is a strong guy but at least sit out the rest of the year.

If he is making progress in the minds of the doctors, that is all well and good, but making progress doesn't mean he is ready to play. Why somebody in the Eagles organization doesn't just say he will not play for the rest of the year is beyond me. It's just selfish on the part of the organization to even imply that he might play. We all know the value of Westbrook, but when does the player's health and well-being take priority over the game itself? If he was a punter, I might think twice about letting him play, but as a running back, getting hit in the head is unavoidable.

I've never read something so ignorant in my life. It was my belief that people were inherently good and cared about other human beings. After reading your comment, I no longer believe this is true.

I say Who Cares! let the boy play. Most NFL players are only a few IQ points above vegetables anyway! They are here on this planet to perform for our amusement. Is anyone here honestly going to care if this guy is in a wheel chair and drooling all over himself in 5 years? Less money to pay in retirement! let him play!

I agree with TOMAHAWK, LEGENDARY, and DERRICK S AND ALL THE OTHER FANS THAT WANT TO SEE WESTBROOK OFF THE FIELD THIS YEAR.

The only honorable thing to do is to put him of IR because he wants to play and compete, If the Eagles make it to the SuperBowl, they can bring him off so that he gets a ring if the Eagles win, but if the Eagles do not get to the SuperBowl, then he gets to rest and heal. Brain injuries are not to be taken lightly. There are enough punch drunk ex-boxers that prove the folly of dismissing brain trauma.

I do not want to see Westbrook lose all quality of life even though he wants to give all. His kids deserve more than that.

Tomahawk, you're absolutely right. Sometimes you have to let go and this would be the best opportunity for Westbrook! Though he's not on either of my favorite teams, he's been one of my favorite players since he began with the Eagles.

Brian, I'd rather see you healthy and commentating in a booth somewhere. You have had a great career and there's no shame in retiring. Live long and Strong!

westbrook isnt gonna retire. at least not yet. but with 7 games to go in the season and westbrook really not being a major part of any of the eagles wins so far this season. i'd be shocked if andy reid plays westbrook until about 2 weeks left in the season and only if the eagles are in contention for the playoffs. mccoy, thankfully, can do about the same things as westbrook.and mccoy is as strong and as fast as westbrook.westbrook needs to get well and its not gonna happen in 2 weeks.

I don't care what the doctors say, he should not play anymore, at least not this season. He should not have played in the last two games, but the almighty doctors cleared him. What does it mean really, to say that a player is "cleared?" It is nothing more than false hope. If he gets another concussion, it could be the crucial one that ruins this mans way of life. Westbrook should talk with ex-Flyer Keith Primeau about concussions. Number 36 will always be appreciated in this town.

How do you make significant strides from a concussion in 4 days. Concussions let alone multiple concussions can have significant impacts years down the line. I'd loved to see the test that he made significant strides on, he can repeat his name without slurred speech, he can recall childhood memories. This article is ridiculous.

Second concussion in a three-week span...time for him to hit the I.R. and heal a bit. This is crazy. We're talking about this guy's life. He's a GREAT player and a big loss, but I'd rather see him take his time with this and see how it goes next season than risk his career & serious injury or even his life. He's given his heart and blood for the Eagles it's time they took care of him a bit.

As a Cowboys fan I want to see Westy go. He has torched us and every other NFC East team for too long. Only thing is, I am just not a die hard fan, but a level headed fan. I hate to see this kinda thing happen to ANY player, well, unless they play for the Skins. Just kidding. If it's time for Westy to go, and considering the way concussions tend to happen more frequently once you've had one, then it's time. Westy is a GREAT player and you Eagles will miss him. But you guys have another back in McCoy that will be just as good as Westy. So do not dispair. Wish the man the best of luck and a long, healthy life.

As an Eagles Fan, I would rather to have Westbrook on IR and not play or to Retire. The man contributed so much to the Eagles, him playing again and risking another injury is not worth your mental stability.

Man I can believe the number of losers in the humanity way want to move in with FUBAR and Carin.

jonyjoe247 (post 348) definitely fits in that scene. Hey there is too many of you and you might be toxic to the gators....NEW PLAN....FUBAR and CARIN open a trailer park in the middle of the Hanford Nuclear Reservation and you move into a 8 x 14 trailer with your good bud Dac Diggler. In a couple weeks, you can all glow green in the dark.

Works for all the people on Planet Earth, and it probably works for you too if you are honest.

A man's health and life is worth more than any football game or even season. Brian is going to want to come back, so the Eagles have to do the right thing and put him on IR.

He needs to at least finish off the year and maybe get the eagles into the playoff's. Now is not the time for him to quit. His team, the fans, Michael Vick they are all depending on westbrook.
It was just a "fluke" accident, he landed on his head the wrong way. It won't happen again.
To play it safe he needs to wear one of the "extra" padded helmets design for those players with weak heads. It will cushion the blow to the noggin.
Westbrook shouldn't let a bunch of "quacks" determine his future. Get the diagnoses and balanced that against the fans desire for the superbowl. Make the right decision.
