Welcome to Philly, Michael Vick, and watch out

  • Print

PHILADELPHIA (AP)—Dozens of protesters and a stinging newspaper headline greeted Michael Vick(notes) on his first day back in the NFL.

It could’ve been worse. This is Philadelphia.

Vick picked a tough place for a second chance. The City of Brotherly Love is known more for its nastiness than a forgiving nature.

But Vick wants to play here, anyway.

“I know everybody is asking, ‘Why Philadelphia?”’ a somber Vick said Friday, a day after signing with the Philadelphia Eagles. “First off, I think it is one of the flagship organizations—great tradition, great staff, great organization, winning team. I just want to be a part of that great tradition and give this team every opportunity to win a Super Bowl.”

A three-time Pro Bowl pick during six seasons with the Atlanta Falcons, Vick served 18 months in federal prison for running a dogfighting ring and was reinstated just last month by the NFL after being out of action since 2006.

“I think everybody deserves a second chance,” Vick said. “I think as long as you are willing to come back and do it the right way and do the right things and that you’re committed, then I think you deserve it. But you only get one shot at a second chance, and I am conscious of that.”

The former star said he wanted to play for a team with strong ownership, a solid coaching staff and an established starting quarterback. He signed a one-year deal for $1.6 million with a team option for a second year at $5.2 million. None of the money is guaranteed, so the Eagles face no financial risk if Vick doesn’t make the cut.

Dressed in a gray, pinstriped suit, Vick called his offenses “a horrible mistake” and vowed to crusade for animal rights.

“I want to be part of the solution and not the problem,” Vick said during a half-hour news conference. “I am making conscious efforts within the community, working with the Humane Society. Hopefully I can do that locally and continue with my disciplined efforts in bringing awareness to animal cruelty and dogfighting in the inner cities and our communities.”

Eagles coach Andy Reid and former Indianapolis Colts coach Tony Dungy, a mentor to Vick, sat with him and answered questions from more than 100 members of the media.

Reid insisted he did his homework on Vick. Giving second chances is something Reid knows all about: He endured a family crisis in 2007, when his sons were arrested on drug charges.

“I know some people will not agree” with the decision, Reid said, “but on the other hand I think the majority will. Fortunately, in this country, if we handle ourselves properly, we are given an opportunity for second chances. I think people understand.”

Reid clearly had to convince owner Jeffrey Lurie that Vick deserved an opportunity with an organization with little patience for players who cause trouble. Terrell Owens(notes) helped the Eagles reach the Super Bowl in 2004 but got kicked off the team midway through the next season after criticizing management and feuding with quarterback Donovan McNabb(notes).

Lurie called Vick’s actions “horrific” and “despicable.” He said he did serious “soul-searching” and spent several hours talking to Vick before agreeing to the deal.

“After multiple conversations, I felt more open to giving a human being a second chance, who possibly could become a socially active NFL player who actually could do great things off the field,” Lurie said.

McNabb, for his part, said he lobbied for Vick, even though he plays the same position. The two have been friends for years. McNabb has led the Eagles to the NFC championship game five times and one Super Bowl appearance in the last eight years.

The 29-year-old Vick said he is content playing any role on offense.

“Whatever Coach Reid decides on, that’s what I will do,” Vick said. “I’m just here to contribute and help win a Super Bowl.”

It is unclear when Vick will be allowed to play in a regular-season game. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell conditionally lifted Vick’s suspension on July 27, allowing him to sign with a team, practice and play in the last two preseason games, beginning with the Eagles’ home game against Jacksonville on Aug. 27.

He will not be allowed to participate in regular-season games until Goodell gives the OK. The commissioner said he would consider Vick for full reinstatement by Week 6 of the season, Oct. 18-19.

“I have said several times in recent weeks that I want Michael to be one of the NFL’s success stories as an individual and as a football player,” Goodell said.

In coming to Philadelphia, Vick chose a city with a reputation for boorish fan behavior and pitiless sports talk radio.

“He doesn’t stand a chance here,” said Alfred Snolten, a longtime fan. “He would’ve been better off somewhere else.”

Angry fans brought dogs and waited outside the team’s practice facility, carrying signs and banners to display their outrage.

“How could they sign Michael Vick?” said Mark Pascetta of Ridley Township. “They are supposed to be a character team. We don’t need him.”

The Philadelphia Daily News blasted the team’s decision in headlines for Friday’s edition, with a front-page headline blaring “Hide Your Dogs” and “What Are They Thinking?” on the back.

Vick said he knows he might never be forgiven by some people.

“But our country is a country of second chances,” he said. “I paid my debt to society. I spent two years in prison. … That was a humbling experience. I can’t explain how deeply hurt and how sorry I was.”

Some fans have already shown their support, hoping he can help the Eagles finally win their first Super Bowl. One guy used electrical tape to put Vick’s name and No. 7 on a T-shirt and stood out among the protesters.

“He did his time,” said Oscar Alvarado of Camden, N.J.

NFL has so much invested in Vick as the proto-type scatback QB.
They are bored with Manning and Brady. They need COOL back in the NFL.
Black gangstas poject hip.. the NFL (an old and staid) product becomes cool with Vick
back in the marketing fold. The NFL needs the dog killer. And a plea bargain and
lying to the Fed sentencing may hid the dog killing facts... but he is no better than
any sadistic animal killer. NFL is a joke that makes up its own rules to protect its
product and jersey sales. FU Vick. FU NFL.

who the hell cares that michael vick was fighting pitts, do you know that in most parts of the country dog fighting is only a fine. And as far as him strangleing, electricuting, or drowning them, if you remember correctly he was accused of that but was only convicted of dog fighting. He was extremely over sentenced, and i feel America owes him. I was blown away when i heard of all the teams in the nfl that didnt want him, when most of them are in the worst QB trouble and should of been honored to have a player of Michael's caliber. We are talking about a man who plays pro football who gets banged up week after week' why should he feel that athletic dogs are doing the same thing. Have any of you actually seen to pitts fighting, the whole time they are fighting there tails are wagging, how the heck do yall know what them dogs want to do. Michael Vick is the man, it wasnt until he was sent to prison that the falcons even were called the falcons, they were always referred to as "Vick and them." So all of you racist a$$ Vick haters "get a grip" bottonline vick is back and i love it

For ALL of those who think Vick should get a second a chance I want you to think about this... He committed a crime and is now a felon. The average felon in America doesn’t get his job back; hell the average felon can barely get a dish washing job. We as society continue to pamper these athletes and make excuses for them. The average person wouldn't be so lucky to be appointed a great person such as Tony Dungy as a mentor and speak on their behalf. No, what happens with the average felon is he or she gets some probation officer who could care less about you, the average felon hears… Well, Mr. Smith we see you have a felony on your records, you care to elaborate... Mr. Smith we will get back to you and of course they never do. I don’t for one feel sorry for Vick and don’t think he’s remorseful; Vick is only remorseful because he got caught. I agree he paid his time for his crime but I don’t agree with all the hoopla and special treatment. What a great world it would be if we could treat all felons the same way.
I would like to see Vick in two years from now when he’s making the big bucks again… lets see how remorseful he is then.

For those of you who think he should have done more time... great that's your opinion for whatever reason but our justice system no matter how screwed up it is sentenced him and he completed that sentence. If you do a little research you will find the average person caught dog fighting wouldn't have gotten that much time. most of the time Vick received was for lying to the FEDS.

Our God is great and this is how he decided to teach Michael Vick a lesson. Yeah Vick did some sick stuff but who hasn't made mistakes in life, the man did his time now let him live his life, you people need to quit judging him because one day he will be judged, only God can judge someone for their actions in life. He got caught for a reason, everything happens for a reason and this is the way God choosed to teach Vick a lesson, the man had almost two years too sit and think about his mistakes and what he did in life, he cried many nights and cried himself to sleep but there are people in this world who has no empathy and can't relate to anyone else and how situations they are in can make them feel so they just want to judge. Vick will take full advantage of his second chance in life so let the man life and quit hating on him!

I honestly cannot believe how stupid some of you really are. You cannot comparatively punish people for crimes they commit. Just because one person commited a worse crime and got off easy does not mean that people who commit crimes against dogs instead of humans should then not be punished at all, or less than what is morally right. I do not believe that Vick should be allowed to play a sport he loves and make millions of dollars doing it just because others who hurt humans are still allowed to, they shouldnt be allowed to play either. And you f***ing idiots like raheem comparing hunting to dog fighting are total freaking dumba***. I do not hunt, and honestly dont see how people can bring themselves to do it, but its different. Hunters do it for a purpose, they eat the meat of the animals they kill and they try as hard as they can to kill them quickly with shots to the heart or head. They dont do it to enjoy watching two animals rip each other to pieces until one is unable to fight anymore and then let the loser bleed to death or shoot it or drown it. Hunters dont tie a deer's mouth shut and use it as bait for another animal who they send in to practice ripping pieces of its body off. Dogfighting is INHUMANE, and if you participate in it you are no longer human. The fact that you can even think for a second that dogfighting is the same as the UFC, Evan, proves you are as smart as a slug. Vick is NOT sorry for what he did to those dogs, and he never will be. He apologized over and over to his fans and his family, he said he didnt think of how it would hurt them and his career. I NEVER heard him apologize to the dogs or for the pain and suffering that he put them through. He is scum, but I really dont care that he's playing again because he's already in line for hell when he dies. He'll get his one day.

Yeah ok Michael Vick screwed up, he did some nasty things to dogs and don't get me wrong I love dogs but they are well...dogs. He didn't murder someone, he didn't rape a woman, he didn't beat the crap out of his wife (all of which other NFL players have done with just a slap on the wrist). He served his time, he faced his punishment and now the guy is trying to rebuild his life. Let him get on with it. Everyone deserves a second chance and no one thinks what he did was right but let it go people, we have all done things we are not proud of, they just may not have been so public. Just thank God no one is judging you as harshly as they have this man.

evan W, difference between dog fighting and Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) is pitbulls who are forced to fight are tortured and have no choice but fight unlike people who want to fight and take chance of getting hurt.
Oh, why do you ask such question knowing difference?
No matter how hard you try to justify shameful sadistic dog fighting, there is no justification for pleasure of barbarians in supposedly civilized society.
Boycott Eagles and ALL companies sponsoring Eagles.
My point is Michael Vick INTENTIONALLY tortured pitbulls to death and enjoyed it but he dishonestly called his sadistic activity 'mistake'.
I don't think he is changed man.

Not only white people are angry about the way Michael Vick tortured and killed pitbulls so how anybody can make racist statement?
When some black people are going to stop making silly excuse to defend criminals who was involved in shameful sadistic dog fights and killed innocent defenseless pitbulls in most barbaric ways??
When are they going to get civilized and think like true humans instead of thinking like primitive uncivilized barbarians?
I am sure many decent black people are outraged of what Michael Vick did to hundreds(if not thousands) of pitbulls.
There is no way for people to care for human race when they even don't have love for innocent defenseless creatures.
Michael Vick need to be honest and tell people "I intentionally tortured and killed pitbulls who lost and weren't interested to fight and THAT WASN'T MISTAKE.
Drowning, burning, and electrocuting pitbulls are mistake?
    Of course not!
Just a case people don't know, Amish puppymillers are doing same thing Michael Vick did and they laugh at people who treat dogs and cats as companion animals.
Amish people don't believe animals have feeling and suffer.

To Jimwalters73 and all the other racist white people out there. You are so concerned about what Vick did, I'm not saying that it was right. Because I've 5 cats and I love them dearly. I'd probaby do to Vick and any one else that would try to harm my "babies' what was done to those dogs. But move on, you people are so concerned about what happen to those poor animals well, where was your compassion when we as a people was being lynched, castrated, our women raped by you people.
Yes it is all about race, because you bring race into everything. President Obama can't be just the President of this county we're forever reminded that he is our first "black" president. Anyone with eyes can see that. This man is hated, why you ask because he is an African American. When Tiger wins we have to read the racist comment that are made about him, because he is also African American. At the town hall meeting that silly old white woman was on the verge of having a heart attack, crying about she want her American back. What she was really saying was that she wanted her white America back. Lets keep it real it is what it is. That moroon showed up at another town hall meeting w/ a gun strapped to his thigh, I work with white people and if the truth be told I can't stand them. You people are so phoney. Yes we should all get along, but it's not going to happen. You don't like me and I really don't like you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Seriously where do you vick supports come from. Nobody is saying we should put animals before people; however, when criminal acts like vick, Bernie Madoff, child molesters, wife beaters, Enron CEO types, etc, those people cease to be called humans. Therefore, an animal is above people like this, these people fall in a special category for scum. I wish everybody good luck and happiness, white, black, brown, whatever. Vick, #uck you die, eat a bag of #icks.

i'm fed up with this propaganda already.

he did his time, he's allowed to work. stop @#$% complaining and let him live his life. don't tar an feather someone just because of their past. everyone has skeletons in their closet.

i think its more of a crime when paris hilton cries about staying in a jail after driving drunk, and it allowed to stay at her mansion.

i'm actually pulling for him. i hope he turns things around. unlike the rest of this goddamn country.

i might even go as far as buy a vick jersey. doesn't mean i condone dogfighting (which i'm adamantly against, by the way). it means i believe that people can turn things around, and I'm all for seeing vick return to glory.

I'm having a problem with all of you who seem to be putting the welfare of an animal any animal over the well being of a human. I believe that Vick would be fine if he only had assaulted a fellow human or raped some no name lady. But fight pitbulls and to many of you do gooders are ready to kill him if given the chance. And peta what a looser group, they hate pitbulls just as much as they claim to hate Vick. There groups position is the desire to euthanize all pitbulls and similar breeds.
Vick better volunteer at the humane society said one coach. What for, who would benefit from this, and why would anyone attempt to require this of a employee? Understand I hate how Vick tortured dogs who wouldn't or couldn't perform in the pit, but I respect him more than I do kobe who allegedly raped a female, more then Tyson, more than Ray Lewis, so if your a fan of peta or someother worthless animal organization suck it up and remember humans are much more important than animals, much more important. But we still should treat animals with respect and love though, but always remember to most humans on this planet dogs are property not humans.

Don't know about you, Derick, but I never did "worse" than hanging, electrocuting, or drowning dogs because they didn't fight.

Phila has proven itself to be totally classless again with this move - both the team and the fans who are supporting it. But then, Phila was never known for its class anyway. And not only did they give this dog murderer a contract, they gave him #7 - a number that should have been retired here a long time ago.

I am ashamed of the Eagles - From here out, I will not watch a single game, I will not root for them, in fact, I will root for them to lose every game. I will not spend one cent on any of their merchandise, and I will not support any sponsor who advertises with them or is any way affiliated with them.
