Pennington not sure whether he’ll play again

MIAMI LAKES, Fla. (AP)—Chad Pennington’s(notes) latest comeback is under way, even though he’s not sure he’ll play again.

The Miami Dolphins quarterback has completed the first phase of rehabilitation from season-ending shoulder surgery, and he’ll fly Wednesday to Birmingham, Ala., to consult with Dr. James Andrews, who performed the operation Oct. 2. They’ll map out a program for the next six weeks, and Pennington said he may wait until March to decide whether to play in 2010.

“I can’t make the decision until I get to the point where I see how I feel and how it responds,” Pennington said at a Dolphins luncheon. “Then I can say I’ve given it everything I can give it to make the right decision for me and my family.

“I’m going full steam ahead for the next five months. My goal is by March 1 to be ready to work out for any team, including this team, and be able to make a decision where I can go into an offseason program full steam ahead not considered an injured athlete.”

The operation was the third on Pennington’s throwing shoulder. Twice he has returned from injuries to win NFL Comeback Player of the Year, including in 2009, when he led the Dolphins to their first playoff berth in eight years.

Pennington’s replacement, second-year pro Chad Henne(notes), has staked a strong claim to the No. 1 job by going 4-2 as a starter. Pennington’s contract expires after this season, and he said he has not talked with the Dolphins about returning next year.

“Chad Pennington is an outstanding pro,” coach Tony Sparano said after practice Tuesday. “There will be a time and place for us to have that discussion at some point down the road, but I think everyone knows my feelings on Chad.”

Pennington, 33, said he would consider remaining in Miami as Henne’s backup rather than taking a No. 1 job elsewhere.

“Part of me believes I’m here for a reason,” Pennington said. “I’m a loyal guy and I believe in this organization, and I enjoy this organization and this area. The other part is that I’m a competitor, and I lead and I win games. That’s what I do as a quarterback. So there’s a part of me that if there’s an opportunity (to start), it’s going to be a very difficult decision. And I have no idea what I’m going to do. …

“I’m speaking as if there are going to be opportunities. There may not be opportunities.”

Pennington dislocated his shoulder in the third game of the season at San Diego. There was no muscle damage, and the repair wasn’t as extensive as with his other operations. Pennington said he was told by Andrews he should be able to play next year if he chooses, and he hopes to start throwing in mid-January.

Pennington is around the team during the week and helps with game plans, but he watches the games at home on TV with his three young sons.

“They’ve got their Dolphin helmets on and they’re throwing the football,” he said with a chuckle. “It gets pretty rowdy and loud.”

Pennington watched Sunday as Henne threw an ill-advised interception that cost Miami the lead, then regrouped to direct a 77-yard drive for the winning field goal in the final 1:10 against Tampa Bay.

“Chad does a great job of preparation, and that has allowed him to have some success and play with confidence,” Pennington said. “The telltale sign is for a guy who makes a mistake at the end of the game and then able to bounce back and lead the team to victory. That says a lot. There are not a lot of young quarterbacks who can bounce back from a situation like that.”

Would love to see Chad still play but if retirement is the option, go back to Huntington and coach for Marshall University. They need his knowledge, determination, enthusiasm, and love for the game. It's missing on the sidelines. It would be a great fit for a former Son of Marshall. I would love to see him in Marshall green again.

Its funny as a life long fins fan when Chad first came to the fins I thought...I hope we can stick it to the Jets twice with their former QB. Then as the year progressed and I paid more attention to Chad the human being and quarterback and less to the Chad the former hated new york jet I began to realize just how awesome he was. Not only is the guy extremely intelligent, but he is loyal, classy and probably the best thing that ever happened to Chad Hennes future career for us. After just one full season with us ive definately became a huge fan of him on and off the field. I wish him the best in the future and I hope that he works for the Dolphins organization in one way or another for a long time. I even bought a jersey of his to go on the wall with my dolphins legends...one year or not...im sold. Get well Chad!!!!!

Hope Chad can come back. he is a very efficient QB. He goes to a team with a strong defense and running game and he can do what needs to be done. Think Trent Dilfer with the Ravens, but a better skill set. If you feel it Chad, come on back but don't settle for a back up job if it is possible to get a starting job. You gave your time to the Dolphins, and your loyalty impresses me, but you still need to fight if that is what you feel inside.

Quality, stand up guy with a lot to teach. After his playing days are over, he'll make an excellent coach. I can only hope and pray that it is with the dolphins. God bless you Chad. You have made me a fan of yours for life no matter where you go.

Pennington's arm looked good to start the season. He had good zip and was getting the ball down field. If he recovers from this surgery he is still a quality quaterback. I think Miami play calling is so conservative it really didn't give Chad an opportunity to air it out. If I was coach I would let Chad compete for the starting job next year if his shoulder recovers. He's only 33 and Brett is 40. Chad might have some good years left.

Truth is, Pennington could start on any number of teams and be a massive upgrade for them. The Bills, Raiders, Browns, Jaguars, 49'ers, Bucs, etc.. all have question marks at best, and each would benefit from the total package of leadership, character, and physical skillset Chad would bring to them. He is, above all, very accurate in his throws and rarely plays reckless football. He is a game manager, more than he is a gunslinger. Everyone knows this. Don't underestimate how important those game management skills are though. And don't overestimate arm strength as a criteria for a great quarterback.
    Fact: Pennington's career average yards-per-attempt: 7.2
    Manning's 7.7
    Brees' 7.3
    Brady's 7.3
Not really that much of a difference statistically.... though Chad is not in their league, he isn't necessarily that far out of it either.

And don't you think the Bears are having second thoughts about buying into Jay Culter (aka Jeff George) and his "big arm" ways right about now?

Chad Pennington, the master of the 5 yard pass--you need a 5 yard completion? He's your man...he should do the NFL a favor and retire and spare me leadership and intangibles BS--the Fins were going to replace Chad P with Chad H so they could open up the offense because Henne can get the ball down the field. If Pennington didn't have Randy Moss to throw to at Marshall Chad would have NEVER been a first round pick and now it's time for Chad be a QB coach which he will be very good at

Can someone tell me when Pennington STARTED to play this year? I liked the guy since he basically gave several "bud adams one finger salutes" to the Jets last year but this year watching him was like watching Rocky take beatings by Drago. Time to hang them up Chad with Westbrook. Two good guys who should move into coaching.... or those cheesy nutrisystem commercials.

CP is a offensive cooordinator in the making, with head coach implications, either in the nfl or in college. dude is smart and knows how to play the game, just wish he could throw the ball.
loved him with the jets, but you knew what you were getting, someone who could control the huddle , but had no zip on the ball.

Chad was/is a mediocre QB, with a nice knack for managing the team on the field, no more, no less. He never had an arm that was worthy of an NFL QB, so why bother to discuss it. Why bother to discuss the Jets as well? As a 36 yr season ticket holder, they once again threw us a bone (3-0 start) and then got swallowed up by everyone....In two words, "they stink"...Their organization stinks, their head coach is a disaster with a huge mouth....their QB is a rookie, their defensive team read too many of their write ups and what else can I say?
    They are toast....

lets face the facts that are here, the arm appears toast, however the mind is sharp, great qb insight and knows the game, can he coach? dont know, but I'd like to see him give it a try. i'm sure he could give alot of help to the qb position with his insight.

The Jets released him because they went after the least classiest QB in history. How did that work out for you?? And, they also released Chad in the least classiest possible way.

By the way, how's Coach Ryan working out for you?? Boo,hoo, hoo!!
