Miami’s Ferguson done for the season

DAVIE, Fla. (AP)—Miami Dolphins nose tackle Jason Ferguson(notes) will miss the rest of the season with a quadriceps injury, coach Tony Sparano said Monday.

Sparano said he was unsure if Ferguson, who turns 35 on Saturday, will need surgery. He declined to elaborate on the specifics of the injury.

“We lost a heck of a player and another captain and those types of things,” Sparano said. “It is happening every place you look around the league right now. That is what happens. It is Week 12. These guys understand and we have prepared for these things, so we will be prepared.”

Ferguson has been in on 23 tackles in nine games for the Dolphins (5-5) this season. Dolphins running back Ronnie Brown(notes) (foot) and quarterback Chad Pennington(notes) (shoulder) have also suffered season-ending injuries this year.

“It’s the nature of this game, though,” left guard Justin Smiley(notes) said. “Sometimes you have to close ranks and march on. We’re prepared to do that.”

The Dolphins, who have propelled themselves back into the playoff mix with two straight wins and five in seven games, face the Bills (3-7) on Sunday, then meet the Patriots on Dec. 6.

“Those two are no cakewalk,” Smiley said. “We’ve got Buffalo, whose hungry for a win, and those guys should have won the game last week. Obviously, everybody knows about the Patriots. … We’ve got our work cut out for us.”

Dolphins backup nose tackle Paul Soliai(notes) has been nursing an ankle injury, and the other likely candidates to fill in for Ferguson are Tony McDaniel(notes) and defensive end Randy Starks(notes).

“We had a situation where (Ferguson) wasn’t in there before, had to play with some of these other guys in his place and they have done a good job,” Sparano said. “I told the team that this morning. We have had some bumps, but the guys have responded really well. The guys who have gone in at different positions throughout the course of the season have done a great job.”

Ferguson wasn’t the only Dolphins player to leave Miami’s 24-17 win over Carolina on Thursday banged up. Four offensive linemen left with injuries, and the Dolphins used three centers, including one moved from tackle who had not practiced snaps. When asked about one of the other injured players, Sparano said he would have updates later in the week.

“Nobody is going to feel sorry for you and if you start feeling sorry for yourself you are going to be on the wrong end of a real good butt-kicking,” Sparano said of moving past the injuries. “We are not going to do that. We are going to get ourselves ready to go and go down there, try to win a division game, which is all our focus is about right now.”

Any injury is a factor in the team... However, this team will not quit!! The Parcells regime has this team hungry and playing with a passion.. Someone will step up and step in for Furgie and the Dolphins will continue to believe they can beat anyone on any given day.. My fearless prediction is we finish 9-7 and still have a shot at the playoffs................

Wisdom and maturity are born from adversity. Regardless of what happens this year (and I am hoping for a playoff berth which is in reach), 2010 is shaping up to be one hellofa great year.

This injury is going to affect the team much more so than the ronnie brown injury. This guy was a monster, always taking on double teams and still being in on 29 tackles in 9 games!! Paul Soliai is only effective if he's over that foot injury. He was a complete pushover in the second half of the Jets game after he tweaked his foot/ankle. So the Phins' BETTER get busy addressing this problem NOW!!! Without Fergie, that leaves the 2 most glaring weaknesses on that defense....Akin O'deyle{? spelling} and Channing Crowder!!! BOTH are the worst players at their respective position on this team!! Neither is even average at pass coverage {a back out of the backfield, weak!} and BOTH not only get run over by every offensive lineman, blocking back, wideout, slot-back, and sometimes q.b / wildcat, but they miss more open field tackles in one season, than, say...Zach did in his entire freaking career!!! Let's hope that Chad Henne can keep getting better with his so-called weapons. Hey "Chris Chambers" looked good catching that 63 yard bomb yesterday huh? We don't need a guy like that so why even make an attempt while he's on WAIVERS, NO LESS!!! The last time we had a threat of 60 plus yards, #13 was throwing it to #83 or #85. Need to blitz more and run more man to man to make up for this loss. Joey has to try to keep his play up to his "comments" and our "special teams " needs to make a few plays, every game. Fumble caused here, pick six there, kick return as well, that's our only hope for playing in January, when it counts!

"The fin will do good trust me "............

No decent backup to replace Ferguson, no, they won't do good in that dept., and I don't "trust you" because you have a clue as to what you're talking about.

AMAZING DOLPHINS ARE BY FAR THE BEST TEAM IN THE NFL. What other team can say this, take away our starting QB, top RB, top CB, and NT, yet we are still in the playoff hunt. Colts, Saints, Chargers, Steelers, Patriots, Giants, Falcons, Bengals, Packers, Vikings, Cowboys, take away their QB alone and the season is over.

Poor 'Fins... Still, you had to see a RB injury coming, given the workload every week and the "3 yards and a pile of dust", smashmouth mentality. Plus, Chad P.'s not exactly the most resilient guy in the NFL. I expect Ricky to wear down in a week or two. You can't get 25 touches a game without it affecting you.

The strength of that Defense has been their ability to stop the run. They're terrible against the pass. Now that they've lost a Nose Tackle (one of the more difficult positions to replace, and critical to the 3-4 formation) which is really gonna hurt. That Offensive Line is going to have to stay healthy for them to stay in games through that ball-control, run-style offense.

    Not good for MIA...
