Cutler has good things to say about McDaniels

  • Print

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP)—Now that they’ve been separated for five months, Bears quarterback Jay Cutler(notes) has high praise for Broncos rookie coach Josh McDaniels, whom he’ll see in a preseason game at Invesco Field this weekend.

Cutler says in the brief time he spent with McDaniels he could tell Bill Belichick’s latest disciple was an offensive mastermind. Cutler said the Broncos are in good hands with McDaniels and quarterback Kyle Orton(notes).

“He’s going to be a good coach,” Cutler told Denver reporters in a conference call Wednesday. “I think their offense is going to be fine. I think Kyle’s going to be fine. (McDaniels) is an offensive mind.

“Just the brief amount of time I was able to spend with him, he’s impressive. He knows a lot about offenses, he knows a lot about getting guys open and scoring points, as everyone’s seen when he was in New England, so I think they’re going to be fine.”

The Broncos traded Cutler to Chicago for Orton and three draft picks in April after Cutler’s rift with McDaniels became irreparable.

The genesis of their disagreement came when Cutler learned McDaniels had talked to the Patriots about acquiring quarterback Matt Cassel(notes) in a three-way trade that would have sent him to Tampa Bay. Cassel was dealt to Kansas City instead, but in subsequent conversations, Cutler couldn’t get assurances from the 33-year-old rookie coach that his name wouldn’t come up again in trade talks. So he asked out.

Cutler said he doesn’t want to rehash the details of their ugly divorce, but feels both sides are happier now that they’re apart.

“I think both sides would change certain things and go about it a different way, but I think both sides are happy now and we’re moving on,” Cutler said of the way his stint in Denver came to an acrimonious end.

Cutler said he’s not exactly hyped for his return to the Mile High City, where he’s still trying to sell his multimillion dollar home.

“It’s a preseason game, we’ve got to keep that in perspective,” Cutler said, suggesting the Bears’ real focus is on their opener against Green Bay next month.

Cutler added he expects a rude reception from the fans Sunday night and wouldn’t expect anything less.

“I mean, they’re good fans there and you know we left … it wasn’t the best situation,” Cutler said.

That’s about all Cutler would say about Denver’s fans after dissing them in a Chicago radio interview during training camp, when he said Broncos fans were a 6 and Bears fans a 9. He later clarified his remarks to say he was talking about the bigger crowds at Bears training camp practices, that’s all.

Cutler also said he wouldn’t snub McDaniels if they happen to run into each other before the game, but won’t go out of his way to shake his hand.

“I’m not going to seek him out. I’ve got business I’ve got to take care of there,” Cutler said. “I’ve got a game I’ve got to play in, so we’ll see how it goes.”

Cutler expects to see a heavy dose of blitzing from the Broncos.

“It’s the third preseason game, so offenses and defenses are adding a little bit more and a little bit more and some different wrinkles out there. So, we’re just going to be on our toes and be prepared for anything,” he said.

Cutler also said he had no advice for Broncos receiver Brandon Marshall(notes), whose trade request this summer was denied.

“None of my business. I’m out of the loop on that whole thing,” Cutler said.

In a bit of a surprise, Cutler said he hasn’t spoken with former Broncos coach Mike Shanahan, who was fired Dec. 30 after the Broncos’ monumental collapse cost them a division title and a trip to the playoffs.

“Mike’s busy playing a lot of golf,” Cutler cracked.

After telling reporters in Lake Forest, Ill., he didn’t miss a thing about Denver, Cutler told a different story on his conference call.

“I had fun in Denver. It’s not like I didn’t enjoy my time there because I did. I loved my teammates, I loved playing there. But certain things happen that force you to move and one of those things did happen. I had to move on.”

Bottom line....Stay on the topic. This whole Cutler thing is something small that spiraled out of control fast. Cutler needed to grow up and return phone calls and text messaging. Expecialy from Pat Bowlen imagine if i did that at work it wouldn't me good. Second Hey Coach rookie you just showed all of the country why your a coordinator. I'm pleased with the way the team is going and would of like to have a pro-bowl QB leading the charge.

I don't care about Jay's image...I just think it's extremely crass of you to bring Cutler's mom into the situation and poke fun at her.

I mean, I get it...I understand your frustration. It has to be depressing knowing that the best part of you ran down your mom's leg, but that's no reason to make fun of Jay's mom.

I don't care about Denver or Chicago but I took Cutler's side on this one...a new coach does not come into town and start talking about trading the franchise player especially for Matt Cassel. I think the Broncos are going to have a long year, I don't think Chicago is much better but I think they would win if the 2 teams played in the regular season. Denver could be the worse team in the NFL this year...even behind than Detroit.

Lol nice one Buck. It's funny how some of these posters talk sh*t about people they don't know, as if a few minutes of camera time tells you everything about someone. Cutler may very well be a crybaby and immature, but all of you talking sh*t about him will never truly know unless you meet him. Until then, you're jumping to conclusions and being more immature than Cutler supposedly has been. I guess anything to make you feel better about yourselves right?

I hate Jay Cutler. What a diva. Not many quarterbacks have great careers with this kind of attitude. He had a good thing going in Denver and he threw it away. I'm sure he's happy now in Chicago but we'll see how long that lasts. I just don't think he has the mental makeup to be a great quarterback. It's a shame because he definitely has all of the tools.

If you guys want to check out a great sports message board take a look at HallofForum.com. It's a bunch of sports fans that just enjoy talking sports without some of the nonsense that goes on at other message boards like this one. Cutler has a whiners elitist attitude, so I don't know how he missed attending the U of Florida. The U of F students, alumni, and fans have the most laughable attitude I've ever been around, and it has been a part of that culture long before their current run of good football teams started. WTF is up with that? Please explain in a plausable way.

its the opposite way around. eddie royal is not going to get any deep accurate throws. brandon marshall bailed. denvers season is going to be much like chicago's last year. TE and RBs getting much of the load.

Nice of Jay to clear things up for us about his former nemisis/coach McDaniels.

Now we know for sure that Cutler is a phony along with being a spoiled brat during his time in Denver.

cutler is less likely to succeed with his new wide receivers...i dont think earl bennett greg olsen and devin hester replace brandon marshall tony scheffler and eddie royal. i wouldnt be surprised if orton, who wasnt terrible in chicago, gets used to mcdaniels' system and throws the same amount of tds and yards as cutler does with his bunch.

From being a Broncos fan and living in Denver my whole life, I have never seen such a selfish player as I see it with Cutler!! He is a crybaby and was a cancer, he is not a leader. He may be a better QB than Orton, however I don't see the Bears much better than 9 and 7. Cutler is not a winner, he puts up numbers and will keep the Bears in games, but will not win them games but lose a few for them like Farve does.

    Go Broncos!!!

nice to see a different more grown up side to Cutler, i have had the feelings for awhile reporters where only reportering the negitive as usual. if i was a bronco's fan, i wouldn't boo Cutler. he was screwed over in Denver, trying to bring a QB in like that when a team already has a franchise QB is unfair to that QB. it is more messed up then the QB signings that happens in Philly to McNabb. Of course he would want out. i really question the upper management in Denver though. Firing Shanahan, he may have lost the fire there in Denver to win any more Superbowls, but he was keeping them constitent contenders of in the AFC west. but then to allow a rookie head coach to sever relations with the franchise qb. then to trade him instead of rebuilding the relationship. and now, with Orton still being the starter, just because of the trade. foolish pride. 4 INTS! so i wish Cutler luck in Chicago, he is going to need it as he doesn't have the same weapons. and i hope Denver falls flat on their face, to the bottom of their Div, to the bottom of their league. sorry bronco fans, nothing personal, i just don't care for how your teams management has performed itself this offseason.

    Donald S -

Denver isn't in the division with the Bears. Unless you're saying that those four teams will all happen to go 0-10-6. But Denver isn't even in the NFC. They're in the AFC.
