Cowboys WR Williams repeating frustrating refrain

  • Print

IRVING, Texas (AP)—While his lower-paid teammate breaks records, Cowboys receiver Roy Williams sounds like a broken record.

The player who cost Dallas three draft picks and a $45 million contract extension has offered the same refrain for weeks now. He’s frustrated. He can’t get on the same page with Tony Romo(notes), and doesn’t know why. He’s much happier simply winning in sunny Dallas than he was losing in snowy Detroit.

Williams skipped to a slightly different tune this week by saying he still considers himself the No. 1 receiver despite mounting evidence to the contrary. He said “things are just going No. 2’s way,” referring to Miles Austin(notes).

The less-celebrated Austin has more yards and touchdowns in the past three games than Williams has in his first 16 with the Cowboys. Austin set an NFL record with 482 yards in his first three starts, while Williams has 447 yards for the equivalent of a full season in Dallas.

The former University of Texas standout found himself backpedaling Thursday, a day after suggesting Romo’s throws are accurate to Austin and all over the place to him.

Cowboys coach Wade Phillips made a similar observation Monday, but the reaction to Williams saying it raised the specter of Terrell Owens(notes). Dallas dumped Owens and his demanding demeanor during the offseason after widespread reports of locker-room disharmony last year.

“I didn’t complain that I didn’t get the ball,” Williams said. “All I said was that, when it comes to me, it’s not there. I’m not saying it can’t be fixed, because that’s what we do every day.

“I’m not a T.O., or I’m not trying to be a T.O.”

Austin’s big chance came in part because of one of those errant Romo-to-Williams throws. Reaching to try to catch a high throw against Denver, Williams took a hard shot to his ribs. The damage forced him to miss the game at Kansas City a week later, when Austin started and set a franchise record with 250 yards and scored twice. Austin has five TDs in three games.

Williams, meanwhile, has just three touchdowns in a year with Romo. He has 33 catches, not even close to his lowest total in four full seasons with Detroit.

The quarterback is far from concerned, though. Romo says he ignores the numbers and raves about what Williams does in practice. And don’t even start with questions about whether he’s missing the throws to the high-dollar guy on purpose.

“You know, we’ve been through this before with people trying to intersect and divide us as a football team,” Romo said. “This team is too strong from the core. This team is too committed to winning and too committed to improving to let anything like that … divide this team.”

Williams figured to be Romo’s top target among wide receivers after Owens was released, but he didn’t have the numbers to back it up. Although he had a 1,310-yard season in 2006 with the Lions, he hasn’t come close to 1,000 yards any other year. He scored 23 touchdowns his first three years combined, but has just nine since.

Phillips maintains it’s just a matter of time. Because he doesn’t have much to go on in games, he talks about practice. He started this week by saying Williams makes catches “that nobody makes” during workouts. When the questions persisted two days later, he offered an example: a behind-the-back marvel that coaches kept playing back on video because they couldn’t believe it.

Of course, the example leads to the question why the ball was behind Williams in the first place.

“If we had the answer, we’d do it quicker,” Phillips said. “The only answer is to keep working, and both of them are doing that. Roy Williams not having a big year for us so far hasn’t kept us from being 5-2 anyway.”

Williams points out that it hasn’t kept the Cowboys from having the No. 2 offense in the league, either.

“Everything is working for us: offense, defense and special teams,” Williams said. “The only thing that isn’t working for us is Romo-to-Williams and it’s a big deal. It’s the only thing that y’all have to talk about.”

In T.O.’s old locker room, habits are hard to break.

granded williams is not catching alot of balls. but also look at what else the man is doing to blocking tackling . if it wasnt for some of that he was going you really think some of the runners would have gotten the yards they got. look when deon snanders played yeah he could catch and lord knows he was fast but when it came to blocking or tacklin he would just kinda move out of the way. in time romeo and williams will click hopefully but until that time give williams some credit he deserves even if he dont have the ball in his hands. i myself have cussed williams for not catching the ball. but he has helped in several plays. the dallas and eagles game is going to be a good game ....... and i hope the cowboys win i have been a cowboys fan for over 40 yrs good or bad seaon will always be a cowboys fan...............

Williams is a bust and the dumbest move JJ has made since Joey. We should have offered Al Davis that for Asomugha. Hey Roy, just shut up and win!

Wah, Wah, Wah. Maybe you should stop trying to look so fancy when catching the ball (one hand catch), and pay attention to your QB. What happened to respecting the chain of command? Always have to blame someone, jeez.

JUICY JAY 412 your right about luck, but the Steelers played the best team, that the NFC could give them, thats who ends up in the Super Bowl ( The Best). look at the Ravens and the Bucs, not the Best of all time ,but the best the NFL could offer in 2000 and 2001

Seems to me that the 'boys want powde puff players who can't accept criticism. Their little feelings get hurt when someone calls it like it is. Gotta respect TO for being real, they were just too thin skinned to handle it and they're supposed to be men much less football players.

Hey Daniel, I've lived in Pittsburgh for about twenty years. I like the Steelers a lot. But I was raised a Cowboy fan and that hasn't changed. I remind you, with no disrespect, that the modern edition of the Steelers hasn't faced a truly great team in a Super Bowl. Neither the Cardinals nor the Seahawks were as good the Cowboys of the '70's, a team the Steelers beat by a COMBINED spread of 8 points in TWO Super Bowls. Not exactly blowouts dear. And less than the spread in Super Bowl XXX, which the Cowboys ended up winning by 27-17. The modern Steelers, by comparison, were very fortunate to even play in Super Bowls XXXX and XXXIII. Indianapolis failed to capitalize on a critical (and rare) Jerome Bettis fumble, or Peyton might have gotten his ring a year earlier. And this past Super Bowl made Pittsburgh the luckiest team ever to win a Super Bowl. Philly is a choke machine, and the eventiual NFC Champ Cardinals were one of the weakest teams ever to make it to the Super Bowl, much like another Steeler opponent, the Los Angeles Rams. That doesn't take anything away from the Steelers; it's just a reminder that luck plays a factor for all championship teams and the Steelers are no exception. Nothing personal; just the facts. In any event, GO PENS!!!!

Don't be surprised if Jerry Jones eats that contract and releases Roy Williams. No NFL team, other than the Cowboys and Raiders, would be so out there to sign Roy Williams today. Remaining on the Cowboys roster is only going to remind Jerry Jones of what a boneheaded move he made signing this bust.

Hey Cowboy84 I agree with you on people jumping from team to team just becuase they won a Superbowl this last year or the year before that. People need to just stick with the team they started rooting for when they were kids.

Hey Danile The Steelers are a good football team and a great Franchise. They have a great owner. But the Cowboys ded beat the Steelers in Superbowl 1995 to give the Cowboys there 5th Superbowl. I hate the Steelers but I do give credit to them becuase they have 6 Superbowls. But this year isn't going to be there year. There not the Champs no more becuase they lost to the Bears and Bengles. This year its going to be won by the NFC. Its going to be either the Saints or Vikeings. By the way the Steelers home filed turf is a joke. The Cowboys are AMERICA's TEAM. They are worth over 1 Billion Dollars and have a 1.5 Billion Dollar Stadium that puts your Staduim to trash like the Browns.

Roy this is what a #2 receiver suppose to do, take advantage of the attention that other teams pay to the #1 receiver, however if I'm not mistaken, last Year when T.O. was #1 receiver and you where #2 you didn't take advantage of that situation, SO BUCK UP AND SHUT UP, if you don't like it, go find another Team who's willing to pay you what the Cowboys paid for your worthless services.

You are a waste of MONEY $$$$, the least you can do is nagged.

Jerry you traded for him, now get rid of him before is too late.

Trade him to any team, for a 86 oz. Texas Style Steak and call it even.

Roy is an ok receiver at best. The reason Jerry is sticking to him being our "#1 receiver" is for the draft picks and money Roy is worth...or should I say...getting paid.

Another thing, this is being blown way out of proportion. Roy said he admits that he needs to work on his connection with Romo. As long as keep winning, who gives a f--- who our #1 receiver is

    GO COWBOYS!!!!!!
