Cowboys release kick returner Allen Rossum

  • Print

IRVING, Texas (AP)—The Cowboys have released kick returner Allen Rossum(notes) four weeks after he injured his hamstring the only time he touched the ball for Dallas.

The Dallas native was signed to handle kickoff and punt returns before the Atlanta game in October. He was hit hard returning the first kickoff by the Falcons and didn’t return.

Rossum became expendable when Patrick Crayton(notes) returned a punt for a touchdown against the Falcons and did it again a week later against Seattle. Felix Jones(notes) became the primary kickoff returner when he came back from a knee injury.

Cornerback Cletis Gordon(notes) was signed Monday to take Rossum’s spot on the roster.

poolshark - now exactly how do you propose choice get those 10 carries a game? hell felix barely gets that and he's a far more explosive RB. As good as choice is there just isn't room to fit him into the gameplan outside of a few plays a game....true it's a waste of his talent, but there simply aren't enough touches to go around

now i'm not sure what his real value is around the league but if it were me i would consider trading barber for either a high draft pick or a quality WR and moving choice into that #1 role (not because he's a true #1, but because felix is better suited as a #2). I don't think there would be any real drop off in production from the RB position and it could significantly improve some other area on the team

choice should be getting the ball a whole lot more.he has showed to be a very good back out of the backfield and running the ball.it is crazy not to let him touch the ball at least 10 times a game.that is a waste for him only to get one or two carries in a game.

That's a shame. There was certainly potential, and they had room on the roster when they got him. So why not reserve Crayton and Jones for their offensive play, instead of risking them getting hurt on returns - especially Jones, since he's shown to be injury-prone?

Mr. New Rule poster, if you don't know when to use parentheses instead of commas, maybe you're the one who shouldn't breed? If you're going to be boorish and insulting at least be smart enough to know if your own text is correct. See below for the correct version.

"Second: If you can't spell the word safety (yes it does have an e in it) then you shouldn't be allowed to breed, let alone post a comment."

So far so good, the thing about december... well after going 13-3.... there shouldnt be any doubts they did it once and they can do it again. but more like 12-4 or 11-5, but 13-3 would be fantastic... Still, like ROMO said playing at this level isnt gonna get them where they want to be, especially the way N.O puts points on the board. They score like this is basketball. GO COWBOYS

New rules to post about the Cowboys,

First: Jerry Jones is second in command to God, so whatever he says goes. That means Roy Williams is great, and so is Romo, so it is not true that Roy can't catch, it is an optical illusion.

Second: If you can't spell the word safety, yes it does have an e in it, then you shouldn't be allowed to breed, let alone post a comment.

Third: The Cowboys are 7-3, fist in the NFC east, so there is really no reason to drag them all under the bus yet. The defense just needs to start scoring, since they don't allow very many points.

Fourth: Tony Romo is better than 75% of the quarterbacks in the NFL, and he does make plays happen, next game try watching without your beergoggles on.

    Go Cowboys

Football is a team sport and being a team sport all players have to be on the same page. and Dallas offensive is not. our performance varies from week to week game to game we have no consistence with our play. Tony Romo is not the QB that is the future for the cowboys. A QB is a leader and a person who no matter how bad the other players play he can make a play to get things started for a win and Romo does not have that ability. he throws interceptions at the worst time WHEN THEY ARE ABOUT TO SCORE. he does this at least once a game and it sucks.

i'm a true cowboys fan since 1960 when tom landry was the coach and tex schram was the man for the dallas cowboys. my comment is that tony romo is not the quarteback that dallas is hoping for. since signing that new contract tony romo as not done a damm thing as a quarterback. he is not accurate with his throws he is not worth the money dallas sign him to.

I can see why they cut him, and he is one of the best guys to return punts and kick offs, But the Cowboys needed to sing a real safty and but Ball back at Corner Back, He isn't playing Safty the right way. Hamlin get healthy sooner then expected please, The D needs you. Lets Go Cowboys.

"alex m, The s.o.b. had one good game. (unleash him as a game changer) Stop huffing spray paint and get back to reality, the tool (Miles) is mediocre at best. They played the winless Chiefs - everybody is unleashing against KC. There is a planet called Earth that you should visit sometime."

Oh man, I just had to revisit this one. Crayton has stepped it up after Rossum got hurt on his first return as a Cowboy (WTF?). And Miles Austin is turning into the real deal. Keep it rolling into Philly!

for you comment readers: we got 11 more to go baby and i would put money on it that MR.Rossum will set up at least 5 games with run backs...keep the cowboys in good field poss. 35 or better... long as the punt or kick teams give him running lanes..... we just been saved in that department ...if you check the records he's second all-time in return yardage...back in TEXAS with crayton but a better player by far, from the great school of ND..played in big games in college just won the superbowl with steleers..hope you get yo #20 jersey ,you home with the star on yo helmet and as a child we all wanted to wear that star....go COWBOYS

Thank Gawd no more Crayton returning punts. He had some good ones to begin the season, but his history career YPR is pathetic. I'm happy to see him slowly phased out in general.

i cant believer the niners let rossum go. it makes no sense at all. now we have a tight end, delanie walker, returning our kicks? he's no threat to take one back. dumb move on SF's part. cowboys, ya'll got a nice weapon. he can also play corner in emergencies.

Man, give Patrick a break, he's a good solid player maybe he was trying to hard to get something started,,, The real question that I have is why the Cowbooys don't use TC that much "Tashard Choice" The guy makes play.. Jason Garrett is horrible at play calling.. I hope he is not the future for the Cowboys or I'll have to look for another team !!!!!!!!!!

cowboys need to use their dark jerseys more it seems jerry jones has them dressing up as softies and the only time they use them is cause thier forced to.I believe they are more intemidating in dark color jersey than the white jersey,it seems that every other team is wearying thier dark jerseys at home except Dallas softies dont get me wrong i love the cowboys but the need to know whats up.

The return game has been a weak spot for the COWBOYS for several seasons, Rossum will be an improvement even at 33, he may be the best since Sanders was here.
