December means questions for Romo, Cowboys

  • Print

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP)—Tony Romo(notes) was sitting at the podium after answering questions about Dallas’ win over the Raiders when the quarterback turned to a group of media nearby with a grin on his face.

“Yeah, they won, but … ” Romo playfully said Thursday night, mimicking the inevitable conversations about the Cowboys now that they’re headed into December.

The NFC East-leading Cowboys (8-3) have won six of seven games after their 24-7 victory over Oakland. They are 4-0 in Thanksgiving Day games since Romo became the starter.

But now comes the post-Thanksgiving stretch where the Cowboys have faltered so often in the past, both before and since Romo took over.

“It’s going to be something we’re going to have to continue answering, honestly until we get better,” Romo said. “So we’ll hopefully do that this year.”

Just last season, the Cowboys went 1-3 in December to miss the playoffs by one game. They were 13-3 the season before, when they lost twice in December before getting beat in the playoffs.

“We know where we were in the past and what it’s been about. It’s not going to be any easier this year,” tight end Jason Witten(notes) said. “We’ve done all this work to get to this point and we don’t need to let it slip away.”

That was basically the message owner Jerry Jones delivered in the locker room after the victory over the Raiders, though receiver Patrick Crayton(notes) said that would be a PG-rated version of how the owner encouraged the team to take advantage of what’s in front of them.

“I feel like that we probably have been forewarned about what happened to us last year,” Jones said. “And that’s the whole point. Now let’s learn by the events of the last two seasons and have focus and work on that.”

The Cowboys’ last playoff victory came during the 1996 season, a year after their last Super Bowl title. They are 20-39 in games played after Thanksgiving since then, including five playoff losses.

Romo is 15-2 in November games, then 5-10 in games played after that, with losses in both of his playoff games.

Still, he insists he doesn’t feel any extra pressure now that the calendar will flip to December.

“It’s not different than the weight of a specific game,” Romo said. “I don’t know that it’s any bigger than this last game because it was November and this next one is in December. … I know it will be a fun little story; I’m sure there will be a few of them about it. But for us, we’ll just kind of keep the blinders on and keep going.”

Dallas plays Dec. 6 at the New York Giants (6-5), who back in September kicked a field goal on the final play of the game to ruin the Cowboys’ debut in their new stadium.

The Cowboys’ other remaining games are against division leaders New Orleans and San Diego, plus NFC East rivals Washington and Philadelphia.

After being limited to only one touchdown in each of their last two games, Romo and Co. had a much-needed resurgence against the Raiders (3-8).

Dallas had 494 total yards and became the first NFL team in three years with eight plays of at least 25 yards. It was Dallas’ fifth 400-yard game, one short of matching the team record for an entire season.

The Cowboys have 4,313 total yards (392 per game), only 15 short of the most they’ve had through 11 games in a season—and that was 43 years ago.

Romo, playing four days after taking a knee to his back against the Redskins, was an efficient 18-of-29 passing for 309 yards with two touchdowns in his 50th career start. It was his 21st 300-yard games, and only Saints quarterback Drew Brees(notes) (28) has more since Romo became a starter.

Witten, playing with a sprained left foot, and Miles Austin(notes) gave Dallas two 100-yard receivers in the same game for the first time since the 2006 regular season finale. There was balance in the running game, with Felix Jones(notes), Tashard Choice(notes) and Marion Barber(notes) all running for more than 60 yards and each with a play of at least 32 yards.

Now they get a three-day weekend before returning to practice Monday, the final day of November.

“This was a feel-good game for us. It was a game where we did a lot of things well. We feel good about ourselves,” coach Wade Phillips said. “Confidence-wise, it certainly helps you. … We probably have as tough of a schedule as anybody has, but we feel good about if we play well, we can do well.”

"December, December, December, December, December, December, December is EAGLE time! America's Team?? PUUGHLEZZE!!!!

EAGLE NATION - D'Mac, Vick, Cole, D-Jack, 'Spoon, Maclin, The Real McCoy. This team is coming together at the right time.

December, December, December, December, December, December, December is Cowboy crumble time! ARE YOU READY TO CRUUUMMBLLE!!!!"

Giving up 24 points to a terrible 3-7 division rival AT HOME is coming together at the right time? That doesn't bode well for Philly's December outlook. You're worried about the wrong team.

if you had any real brain cells, you'd know that the media gave that moniker to the cowboys in the 70's, Jerry didn't take over till '89. so much for your marketing ploy ! and you must be the only idiot that thinks " america's team" means that everybody is supposed to root for one team. i think that turd dump is named brian B. Hey did you know that if you switched the "i" and the "a" in your name, you'd finally have a brain ?

Wow! I was looking ahead at the Dallas schedule. That is one tough schedule. You got the Giants who are going to come out desperate as all get out. I might go to that game in my EAGLES gear and a Giants helmut on. But then you have San Diego who is blazing hot right now. You'll have a pissed off Saints team who will be angry after losing to New England and a desperate Atlanta team in the previous 3 weeks. Then you have Washington looking to be the spoiler. And it will probably be for the better that the Eagles will be well in hold of first place at the end. If that last game means anything, you know the Eagles will be bringing the BIG EAST BLAST to Texas to blow that chintzy stadium up with another dominate performance over the 'boys (Remember last December 44-6!). The Cowboys will probably finish 1-4. The 'boys stink! GO EAGLES!

Finishing ahead of the Eagles is your championship! What a joke! The skins will be ready for you next week. They don't want to lose to another division rival, since we swept them this year. GO EAGLES!!!

FYI: I live in Dallas, but I can still admit the Dallas Cowboys are the New York Yankees of football. Unlike baseball, you only get 16 regular season games instead of 162. The Cowboys December schedule is brutal. My 'crystal ball' has Dallas losing 3 out of their last 5 games. 8-3 will become 10-6. Unlike 2008, however, this time they will win the division and therefore make the playoffs. And alas, for the first time since 1996 season, they will win one (1) playoff game, most likely a 'revenge' win against Green Bay in the wild card round. Then they will lose to either Minnesota or New Orleans in the second round. Considering it has been 13 years since Dallas has won a playoff game, winning even one playoff game will be a major improvement. Romo is not, and never will be, on the same level as Brett Favre (even at 40) or Drew Brees. But, when he is on, Dallas always has a chance to win. Dallas will crumble (a little bit) in December, but because the Giants & Eli Manning are having an off year and Washington is Washington, that leaves the Eagles, and this time, we will not be embarassed 44-7 or whatever last year's score is; and even if we are, Dallas will finish one game ahead of the Eagles. And Brian B is right, Dallas is Mexico's team, but then again, Dallas is little mexico as well. And lately perhaps not such a bad thing. If the Dallas Cowboys played one 'home' game in Mexico City every September, 120,000 fans would watch them defeat Washington. Happy Holidays to all, and GO N'AWLINS SAINTS!

yeah yeah romo and the cowboys ARE overrated but in december and in the playoffs every team and every player are being the best they can be because everything is on the line, even losing teams players are trying to keep a job for next year. With all that americas blah blah blah every one wants to beat them every game and as the season wears on they hate the cowboys even more just like the yankee thing hard fight all that all the way to the superbowl. cowboys are not that good will be out in the first round after losing in the last week of the season when everyone hates you you have to be great not good.

And how many concussions did Terry Bradshaw have during his playing years?? LOL!

I'm an Eagles fan but everybody knows the Steelers are the class of the NFL in the modern era. They have lost just one Super Bowl and are now on their second hand with rings. The Cowboys stink. Take away the hype and you've got nothing!

Self-proclaimed? I guess all of America is wrong when Dallas Cowboys paraphenalia outsells every other teams all across the country. That's popularity AND it's a fact. Hate them if you want. All I know is that I don't go post on YOUR teams threads. Why? Because I don't care about your team. YOU, however, obviously can't stay away from the Cowboys. Oh, and you might want to tell the NFL analysts to stop calling the Cowboys "America's Team." Even Terry Bradshaw does it. Eat a fat one.

As one of the 3 people in Texas who is not a Cowboys fan (because of the way Jerry Jones did Tom Landry), I advise Dallas backers to enjoy this 8-3 record while you can. I suspect they will lose to New Orleans, San Diego, and then in the playoffs. They don't play well in December. What that indicates to me is that this team may be lacking CONDITIONING. And--with Columbo out injured from the offensive line, that sure won't help them.

I have to agree with most of America ,, Dallas is the self proclaimed team of America , but not too many Americans recognize this as fact ! What they do recognize is Dallas over rating themselves and ending up drowning in their lather ! Not to mention having produced some of the worst presidents this country has ever had , bar none!

Bob Ryan, now Vice President and editor-in-chief of NFL Films, coined this for the Cowboys while preparing and editing the team’s 1978 season highlight film.[8] He was quoted as saying:

I wanted to come up with a different twist on their team highlight film. I noticed then, and had noticed earlier, that wherever the Cowboys played, you saw people in the stands with Cowboys jerseys and hats and pennants. Plus, they were always the national game on television.
Ryan told the NFL Network, for their Top Ten Nicknames show:

I saw all these fans in away stadiums. Hey, they're the most popular team in the country. How can I use that? Why don't we call them "America's Team"?

THEY ARE 8-3 and I believe that as much as I hate to say it are just a few tweaks from being a playon team. So they appear to just win squeeking but I just don't believe you can count any win lighty for then we have to do it with all the teams.....EH?
