Colts K Vinatieri out 4-8 weeks after knee surgery

  • Print

INDIANAPOLIS (AP)—Indianapolis Colts kicker Adam Vinatieri(notes) is out four to eight weeks after having arthroscopic surgery on his right knee to remove a piece of cartilage.

The team said Wednesday they have signed veteran kicker Matt Stover(notes) to replace Vinatieri.

The procedure follows surgery that Vinatieri had in June on his right hip, which caused him to miss all of training camp.

The team also waived tackle Ed Johnson(notes), who had been helping anchor the defensive line this season. The Colts signed Johnson in the offseason despite releasing him last year following an arrest on drug possession charges.

Matt Stover is a fantastic kicker and football player. The Colts are lucky to get him at this time. He was a great asset for the Baltimore Ravens for years.....and many Baltimore fans were very disappointed he was not on the team this season.

ummm the 2 rookies brown and collie wont be getting raises next year due to the fact that idk they signed multi year deals... Now they may get a bonus for production in those contracts but they wont be resigning them to get a raise

I'm wondering why they didn't give Pat McAfee a shot at doing all of the kicking. He did it all at WVU and had a pretty good percentage from over 40 yards out. You would think they would have at least tried it out for a game or two to see if he did well.

I'm sure someone mentioned this but was Shane Andrus already signed? He was excellent in the preseason. Stover is a verteran however I liked Shane. Adam V. was cool but will finally agree with people like #13 that maybe we need to do what Polian tends to do and go with "the next in line" with a kicker. I hated seeing Hunter Smith go but this kid we have now shows he will be money for years to come so it shows we can replace solid veterans.

As far as Johnson that is a surprise. I guess the young draft DT's are doing better in pratice, maybe now we can FINALLY see Fioli once he gets healthy since I haven't seen him but "maybe" 3 snaps.

Alan J, Just so you know, it was Brady who had the Staph infection because he used a non-team associated doctor. Manning came back after missing the preseason and won the league MVP award. But Vinateri is done, even before this surgery, he hasn't been good for the Colt's and they do need to invest in perhaps a new and cheaper kicker so they can open up cap room for the good players like the two new rookies Donald Brown and Austin Collie who will most likely get raises next year by the way they've been playing.

What about the new punter this year, wasn't he handling the kickoffs? I heard he could also kick fieldgoals... just wondering if it is true or not.

Adam will be all right, and the Colts will have a temporary substitute in case he's unable to return by the season's start. It's happened before- the last time he was on the disabled list, Martin Gramatica filled in for him and did a pretty good job. Adam will be good to go around season's start. GO BLUE!!!

NE has not lost a kicking step since Viniteri slimed out of town. Good luck to him and his hip....he will need it...... this heartless business will dump him just as quickly as adore him when he misses a few!

Sure, a kicker has surgery. Bet it doesn't help. Not only that, maybe they're using the same scalpel that cleaned out Manning's knee. Hope you Colts have a backup. cause I smell Staph.....

Yeah... is Adam V is "Done" then why did he hit 4 count them, FOUR field goals against Balitmore in the playoffs in 2006. NE was dumb to let him go.

All you hater trolls, namely obnoxious Chargers fans, need to log off, right now! THIS IS A TROLL-FREE BLOG, AND YOU'RE NOT ALLOWED TO READ AND POST! It's good for Adam to get the hip surgery to help eleviate the discomfort that he's going through. He'll be back, real soon, and the Chargers are done for, afterwards! GO BLUE!

Well that makes sense, in the last several years he has not been as good from distance and his kickoffs have been short. Get well.

He WAS clutch, seems to me that he missed a game winning chip shot field goal even a rookie could have made a year or 2 agains the Chargers.
