Manning is first to 40,000 yards in a decade

  • Print

INDIANAPOLIS (AP)—Peyton Manning(notes) is the first NFL quarterback to pass for 40,000 yards in any decade.

Manning needed 19 yards to reach the milestone. He did it on a 5-yard completion to Pierre Garcon(notes) in the first quarter of Sunday’s game against the Houston Texans.

That could be the first of many accomplishments for Manning on Sunday. If the Colts win, Manning will tie Fran Tarkenton for fourth place on the career wins list for quarterbacks with 125. He also needs four touchdown passes to become the first in league history to throw for 300 in a decade.

Among his accomplishments this season, Manning became the fastest quarterback to 4,000 completions and passed Tarkenton for third place on the career touchdowns list.

QBs use to put up some crazy numbers back in the 30s and 40s. Those old QBs from the 60s and 70s could not handle the SPEED of the game today. Players are too big and fast now.

granted the rule changes do favor qbs and recievers, what a/b the evolution of defenses, Unitas didnt play against near the exotic defenses and blitz schemes

Marino may not have won a superbowl but I still think he is the best quarterback to ever play in terms of skill. He had a hard accurate throw with a quick release. The Superbowl winner is the best team. Although a QB influences that greatly. And seriously Marino lost to the 49ers, in hindsight not exactly embarrising

Johnny Unitas was the best of all time , if he played today he would have had a 60 touchdown season and 40000 yards in his eighth year all the changes to protect the quarterback and recievers make this a quarterbacks league

Ya'll stand back and watch Drew Bree's. He has always been my favorite since Purdue. Drew may be a threat for the next 4 or 5 years.

I'm trying to understand your comment:

Favre is only playing to steal Marino's records? He already owns those records.

Montana was great but he also played on GREAT teams. Tom Rathman, Roger Craig, Jerry Rice, Brent Jones, Taylor. Put any of those QBs you mentioned on that team and they would have won multiple rings too. Saying that Favre only won rings because of White and Butler is ridiculous. If you're going to say that then you might as well start saying that about other QBs too. Bradshaw had Franco Harris, Swann, Stallworth and one of the best defenses of all time. Elway made it to the SB several times but couldn't win without a running game. Montana had great players around him. Name Favre's RB and Receivers on his Superbowl team without looking them up. There is no QB who won the superbowl without help. By the time his career is over, barring no serious injuries, P. Manning will own every major QB record.

How many miles is 40,000 yards? It's a long way. Peyton is the first to reach 40,000 passing yards in a decade, but he certainly won't be the last, especially in the Ohio Valley/Midwest Region. If Ben Roethlisberger plays long enough, he might eventually reach 40,000 passing yards in a decade, but for now, congratulations to Peyton Manning on such a historic milestone. GO BLUE!!!

Jerry S the biggest cry baby ever is Tom Brady get your facts straight! I being a Colts fan agree with Julio the greatest QB of all time Joe Montana, his coolness in the pocket and able to drive down the field won't be matched, that's why he was nicknamed "Joe Cool"

So Peyton is a result of the offense he plays in?! Are you kidding me? He calls his own plays and adjusts to coverage and blitz packages every time he steps up to the LOS.. Look up his stats people. After analyzing them the nay-sayers can all shut their uneducated mouths and go home......

Elway win SB with TDavis- Montana 4rings-Bradshaw 4Rings Brady he good, BUT Favre is not the best of alltime playing now to steal records Marino, could not win SB w/o Reggie White anchoring the defense with Butler, Manning is good but with all the rules changes all QB"s should be passing for 3500 yards, best peroid give me Bradshaw/Montana, Bradshaw mite not have the greatest but he was the toughest SOB to play.

Wow how did this turn to a pat Peyton on the back, best QB of the DECADE .. to a love / hate thing. He was fortunate to be born in the right year. Gets drafted in '98, as an average year ... and then sets the standard in his Sophomore year. Never has cried about the management, coaching, too loudly. Never said he didn't want to quit or not play or change sports. Just showed up, suited up for like almost every game and preformed at the peak for 10-years in a row.

Statistics are just that. Most of these years he has had inadequate run support, meaning no play action to set up the deep strikes. But he still preforms. The QB he is most like [sorry Colts fans] is Jim Kelly, but a more bad-azzed version. Where Kelly strung 4-stellar years, Peyton has tripled it. He has not had a supporting cast. Too all the Elway lovers, the only reason they won the later super-bowls was because of the establishment of a true running game to keep the D-Honest.

With the change of league rules - you don't see the same type of overall team strength: ie cowboy, packers, 49'er, "latter Bronco." Where balanced passing / rushing allow a team to rely on either to win a game.

Peyton by far is the most statistically strong player in the period. That is all this article was trying to say. As for the best QB of all time .... that should be left to a different thread ...

    however ....

In 1999, editors at The Sporting News ranked Montana third on their list of "Football's 100 Greatest Players." Also in 1999, ESPN named Montana the 25th greatest athlete of the 20th century. In 2006, Sports Illustrated rated him the number one clutch quarterback of all-time.

Sometimes, the greatness of a QB is a result of the offensive system he plays under. Would Steve Young have become a Hall of Famer if he had stayed at Tampa Bay? Would Bart Starr have succeeded without Vince Lombardi? Just food for thought...

BTW, let me recommend "When Pride Still Mattered" by David Maraniss, the biography of Lombardi. A tremendous book. It's on sale at Waldenbooks.

He's right. I was wrong in failing to add Montana to the list of elite QB's. Not saying he is the best, but was at one time.

Forget the statistics. Manning will sit in that elite group along with Montana, Morino, Kelly, Elway, Tarkenton, and yes Stabler, Bradshaw, and Staubach. There's more that could be and should be but some never find the way to lead the team to the ultimate goal and the superficial prize. But just because a QB doesn't make it in to the big game are you going to say he's not great???

Any conversation about best QB ever that doesn't have Montana at the top of it is ridiculous. Montana, not Elway, has 4 SB wins without a loss. Montana, not Elway, epitomized cool under pressure.

Elway, Brady, Manning are all close, but Joe is the best ever.

Peyton is the best QB in the game today and is working towards being the best QB to ever play the game. I think he is right up there with Elway and Marino. Favre has done alot and deserves respect whether you like him or not. I think he will solidify his worthiness in being mentioned as one of the best ever with a solid season this year and would really help his cause with a Superbowl appearance this year. I don't think he would even have to win the SB to solidify his chances. But Payton is not finished yet and think before its all said and done, that he clearly will become the greatest QB Ever to havder played the game. I think his father Archie would have been right up there as well if not for playing for the Saints. Tom brady is a product of his environment and therefore is not ranked up there with the greats that have been listed....not even close.

Count Super Bowl rings when Peyton is finished. I love Peyton but if Elway would have had the team around him that Manning has had, even someone stupid would know that Elway would have plenty of rings.

Peyton will have all the records just like Marino but another Super Bowl win is doubtful.

John Elway the best ever. He might not have all the stats, nor play with the best of teams but the Broncos always had a chance with him at QB.
