Manning is first to 40,000 yards in a decade
INDIANAPOLIS (AP)—Peyton Manning(notes) is the first NFL quarterback to pass for 40,000 yards in any decade.
Manning needed 19 yards to reach the milestone. He did it on a 5-yard completion to Pierre Garcon(notes) in the first quarter of Sunday’s game against the Houston Texans.
That could be the first of many accomplishments for Manning on Sunday. If the Colts win, Manning will tie Fran Tarkenton for fourth place on the career wins list for quarterbacks with 125. He also needs four touchdown passes to become the first in league history to throw for 300 in a decade.
Among his accomplishments this season, Manning became the fastest quarterback to 4,000 completions and passed Tarkenton for third place on the career touchdowns list.

I'm trying to understand your comment:
Favre is only playing to steal Marino's records? He already owns those records.
Montana was great but he also played on GREAT teams. Tom Rathman, Roger Craig, Jerry Rice, Brent Jones, Taylor. Put any of those QBs you mentioned on that team and they would have won multiple rings too. Saying that Favre only won rings because of White and Butler is ridiculous. If you're going to say that then you might as well start saying that about other QBs too. Bradshaw had Franco Harris, Swann, Stallworth and one of the best defenses of all time. Elway made it to the SB several times but couldn't win without a running game. Montana had great players around him. Name Favre's RB and Receivers on his Superbowl team without looking them up. There is no QB who won the superbowl without help. By the time his career is over, barring no serious injuries, P. Manning will own every major QB record.

Statistics are just that. Most of these years he has had inadequate run support, meaning no play action to set up the deep strikes. But he still preforms. The QB he is most like [sorry Colts fans] is Jim Kelly, but a more bad-azzed version. Where Kelly strung 4-stellar years, Peyton has tripled it. He has not had a supporting cast. Too all the Elway lovers, the only reason they won the later super-bowls was because of the establishment of a true running game to keep the D-Honest.
With the change of league rules - you don't see the same type of overall team strength: ie cowboy, packers, 49'er, "latter Bronco." Where balanced passing / rushing allow a team to rely on either to win a game.
Peyton by far is the most statistically strong player in the period. That is all this article was trying to say. As for the best QB of all time .... that should be left to a different thread ...
however ....
In 1999, editors at The Sporting News ranked Montana third on their list of "Football's 100 Greatest Players." Also in 1999, ESPN named Montana the 25th greatest athlete of the 20th century. In 2006, Sports Illustrated rated him the number one clutch quarterback of all-time.

BTW, let me recommend "When Pride Still Mattered" by David Maraniss, the biography of Lombardi. A tremendous book. It's on sale at Waldenbooks.

Elway, Brady, Manning are all close, but Joe is the best ever.

Peyton will have all the records just like Marino but another Super Bowl win is doubtful.
