Freeney, Powers continue to miss Colts practice

  • Print

INDIANAPOLIS (AP)—Colts defensive end Dwight Freeney(notes) and starting cornerback Jerraud Powers(notes) are both listed as questionable for next week’s Super Bowl after missing a third straight practice Friday.

Freeney has a sprained right ankle. Powers missed Sunday’s AFC championship game with an injured left foot.

But the Colts remain hopeful both will play against New Orleans.

The only other player who missed Friday’s practice was running back Donald Brown(notes). He’s listed as questionable with a foot injury.

Safeties Antoine Bethea(notes) (back) and Melvin Bullitt(notes) (knee), receiver Austin Collie(notes) (foot) and backup tight end Jacob Tamme(notes) (ankle) were all limited in practice. Brown and Bullitt were both listed as questionable. Bethea, Collie and Tamme are probable.

For one, I don't condone the bashing done by any fans, Colts, Saints, Vikes, Cards, Jets, Ravens, none of it. As far as the "tougest division in football" I can't agree with the AFC South. I don't even believe the NFC south is in the discussion for that one either. I will say that The NFC East is a very tough and very competitive division, as well as the NFC North. Each of thos divisions had 2 teams heading into the playoffs. I would have to go with the NFC East though, because they have had teams consistently going to the playoffs for quite some time. The Eagles have been several times over the last 10 years, the Cowboys have been pretty tough, and the Giants, hell they won a superbowl a couple of years ago. The point is, almost every fan thinks their division is the toughest division in the NFL. The Texans and Titans both made runs at it this year, and I can respect that. But I can't drink the AFC South Koolaid as most AFC South fans do. I don't drink the NFC South Koolaid either. I also do not worship Peyton Mannin or Drew Brees as a great majority of fans do. I respect each for their ability, and I don't care if you agree or disagree, Brees is in the discussion with Manning now, whether the Colts fans want to believe it or not. Brees has done a lot to improve his game. He has led the NFL in TD's for the last two years. He dropped his INT total from 17 last year to 11 this year. He set the NFL Completion Percentage record this year, which not even Manning had ever been able to accomplish.

Now, just so you know, I am not here to bash Manning or disrespect him. I think he is ONE of the greatest QB's of all time, but I will not say THE greatest QB of all time. I am a Saints fan, and even Saints fans know that Joe Montana was the greatest. It took Brett Favre a long time to break Montana's all time playoff passing yardage statistic, and he still came up short on the playoff TD record. Oh, and then there is the little statistic of 4 rings and 3 SB MVP awards. I think that Manning can eclipse Montana, and I think that he eventually will eclipse Montana, but right now, I would list Manning 2nd on the list as the Greatest QB ever.

Now, when it comes down to Brees, over the last few years, he has done some amazing things in New Orleans. He has played at a higher level each year he has been there. With the right coaching staff, and the right team, you can do anything, and that includes beating Peyton Manning in a Super Bowl. Brees is far more talented than any Colts Fan is willing to admit. His dedication to the game, the playbook, the film study, the work ethic to improve, that is unparalelled by any player in the NFL today. During New Orleans bye week this year, at 1pm, Drew Brees was at the practice facility, throwing passes. Coach Payton walked down to the feild and asked him what he was doing, and he told him "I have to get my 30 passes in". Even during an off week he was going through the motions while everyone else was taking a day off. I am not saying he is the Greatest of All Time either, look above and reference Montana, but I do think with his work ethic, ability, skill, drive, determination and dedication to playing and always trying to improve, he is the greatest QB in the NFL at this moment. We will see what the Supe Bowl brings, and see if I am wrong. Brees does deserve credit where credit is due. Indy fans can huff and puff and get sideways telling me that I am stupid, and that I don't know what I am talking about, but when we see the way both QB's fair in the Super Bowl, they will be surprised to see how great he is. It is obvious that Peyton Manning and Drew Brees are the two best QB's in the NFL today, and Feb 7th, we will all see a great match of two superior athletes battling for supremacy.

i agree with earlier post, no comparison between manning and brees......much tougher division for colts plus the defense of the teams going against colts design a plan to stop the pass, and still don't do it. manning best qb of all time, brees not even in the discussion.

If Jared Allen and that "dominating" and "scary good" front line and defense of the Vikings couldn't touch Brees, what exactly is the rationale for thinking Dwight Freeney and the Colts will crush the Saints offense?

The Saints offensive output against the Vikings would have been a lot higher if the Saints would not have had almost 200 return yards. Example, they only had to go about 30 yards and a few plays to go up 21-14 after a long KO return. If the Vikings would have been kicking off out of the end zone like the Saints were, the Saints would have rolled up a lot more yardage. Very simple. 31 points of offensive production. Who cares if it comes from 10 plays and 100 yards or 50 plays and 500 yards? We're going to blast the Saints offense just because they have a good return game? Or because Will Smith knocks the ball out of Harvin's hand deep in Vikings territory setting up a short drive? C'mon folks, you're smarter than thinking the Saints offense is in some sort of doldrums. They "ain't".

The Steelers won two Super bowls in a row in the '70's, got beat by an upstart Denver team the following year in the AFC championship game (Craig Morton anyone?) only to get hammered by the Cowboys in that particular year's Super Bowl. The Saints are this years' feelgood team New Orleans is running high on emotion, no more, no less.Yes, Steeler fans, the Pittsburgh team won the next two after that.

Dear Ron - you are correct with Manning and Wayne being from New Orleans - which they grew up loving and rooting to win. However, they are the only two New Orleans Saints fans who will be on the winning team - the Colts 31-14.

It's the SB, I don't believe Freeney will miss it. I am tired of hearing how this or that defense is going to shred the Colts offense. Look, every week people come up with a brilliant plan, it works for a few minutes, then Peyton and the coaches figure it out and rip IT to shreds! Peyton will not be denied. I also think the Colts can outscore them offense vs. offense. It should be a good game with two teams who deserve to be there.

#1 offense?? Is that what you call less than 100 yds against the Vikings in the second half. The only reason you are in the SB is because Favre threw three picks and then they fumbled six times!! I don't think the colts fumbled six times all season. All we heard two weeks ago from the jets was, "you haven't face the number 1 defense yet." We blew them up!! Will do the same to you. This game will only be close if peyton doesn't play. colts win 31-17.

Well with everything said between all of you, i can assume there is alot of saints fan commenting on a Colt posting. While both QBs have excellent talents, it falls down to, who's been to a super bowl before. The fact that Peyton has been to one, the stress wont get to him as much. It will be a close bout and it will come down to minutes, and if we look at that, Peyton is the best clock manager out there. So i say Colts up over a respectable Saints.

demon ....and all of you....there is no way of making any fair comparison....but sometimes things simply speak for themselves without any stats. colts play in the toughest division in football ....was this year, is most every year peyton has played...peytons stats are great, with playing the best teams in football twice a year, as well as the patriots, steelers...etc. also, he started with a very weak team....so career stat comparisons between breeze and peyton are nothing more than an attempt to justify why one thinks their qb or team is the best. without any stats, and regardless of who wins this weekend....there is no comparison. Peyton is the greatest qb of all time, breeze is not even in the discussion. The colts are hurt everywhere, saints are healthy in comparison....this could make a difference....but THERE IS NO COMPARISON BETWEEN breeze AND MANNING. if you want to compare to manning....talk Unitas, Elway, Marino, Montana......but not breeze

All olts please watch Jersey Shore instead of the Superbowl. Saints offense is going to shred you!!! You have not played the #1 Offense this year. Stop drinking the hatorade and tell me an offense this year you have played that is #1. Also the hurricane jokes are really lame. Manning and Wayne are from New Orleans and will be happy if the Saints win.
