Colts put CB Jackson, S Sanders on IR

INDIANAPOLIS (AP)—The injury bug is still haunting the Indianapolis Colts.

Cornerback Marlin Jackson(notes) and strong safety Bob Sanders(notes) were lost for the season Friday as the team placed them on injured reserve.

Jackson, who missed the second half of the 2008 season after injuring his right knee during practice, suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury to his left knee during a non-contact drill Wednesday. He had been rehabbing the knee after he was hurt against Seattle on Oct. 4.

Sanders, a two-time Pro Bowler, tore his left bicep against the 49ers last weekend and will need surgery.

Sanders had just returned to the Colts’ lineup two weeks ago. He had missed all of training camp and the first five games of the year after undergoing offseason knee surgery. He has missed 40 of 87 games during his injury-plagued, six-year NFL career.

Indianapolis’ other veteran cornerback, Kelvin Hayden(notes), is also expected to be sidelined for the next three to four weeks after he suffered a sprained knee during the 18-14 win over San Francisco. Hayden is not expected to undergo surgery.

“Not real sure (how long Hayden will be out),” coach Jim Caldwell said. “We’re kind of looking at probably a three to four week window.”

The Colts (7-0) host AFC South rival Houston (5-3) this Sunday. Texans quarterback Matt Schaub(notes) and receiver Andre Johnson(notes) will likely be looking at a Colts defense with two rookies—Jerraud Powers(notes) and Jacob Lacey(notes)—starting at cornerback. Three-year veteran Melvin Bullitt(notes) will take Sanders’ place at strong safety.

“(Sanders and Gonzalez) are fine football players, great leaders and members of our team,” Caldwell said. “The thing about it, though, we’ve had young people step up and do a great job in their absence. We’ll continue on that path.”

Wide receiver Anthony Gonzalez(notes), meanwhile, underwent arthroscopic surgery Thursday to clean out loose particles in his right knee. Gonzalez suffered a sprained ligament in the knee during the Colts’ season-opening win over Jacksonville. A date for his return has yet to be determined.

Wide receiver Pierre Garcon(notes) (ankle), defensive tackle Fili Moala(notes) (concussion), offensive tackle Tony Ugoh(notes) (rest) and placekicker Adam Vinatieri(notes) (knee) did not practice Friday. Garcon and Moala are both listed as questionable for the Houston game, as is running back Donald Brown(notes) (shoulder).

Defensive end Josh Thomas(notes) has returned to the Colts for the second time this season. Thomas originally played with the Colts from 2004-08, starting 12 games. And Indianapolis signed tight end Tom Santi(notes) off the practice squad.

I know that it feels great when you make a prediction and it comes true, but at the same time, its football. Anything can happen. Just remember all you Pats fans how Burress predicted that the Pats would score 17 points in SB XLII. And how Brady was like...we're only going to score 17 points? LOL. Nope Brady....you only scored 14 actually, Mr. Big Shot. Wish you could have some of the points you had when you were running up the score against your crappy AFC East competition, huh? And that's why I refrain from making predictions, because a football is a strangely shaped object that does crazy things when it hits the ground. You never know who is gonna win when two good teams play.

The Colts will win Sunday, they have been winning without Sanders and they will continue to do so. the two best QB's in the league is none other than Manning and Brady, but for all you Brady fans have you forgotten when they went all the way to the superbowl undefeated and lost to who? another Manning hahahha, you guys never want to give the Colts ANY CREDIT BUT THERE is no denying that they are a great football TEAM and if manning is given time he will pick you apart. so lets just be honest Manning is the best and always will be the best.

And just remember any team can win or lose on any given sunday.

    GO! BIG BLUE BABY!!!!

Bob Sanders is turning into Mike Brown formally of the Bears. Great player when healthy, but misses too much time.

jefflowe1988, you have a good reason for logging off, right now- THIS IS A TROLL-FREE MESSAGE BOARD, AND YOU'RE NOT ALLOWED TO READ OR POST ANYTHING!!! LB, you need to shut the hell up and log off, too. The Colts are always ready for any situation. Melvin Bullitt will be the main reason for them winning, tomorrow. This season has been mostly about Bullitt- he makes his presence known when he has to. GO BLUE!!!

Indy's backups would start on any other team. They have already proven their worth in the absence of the starters. I am impressed with both rookie corners and Bullit is only a slight downgrade from Sanders.

The Colts should cut Sanders, he's one of the worst players in the league. In 6 seasons he's played more then 6 games...twice, that is pathetic. He should give the Colts a refund for not doing his job!

Its sad Mr. RD that you insist to use fantasy stats to state that Shaub is the #1 QB. You would be laughed out of any room if you said that to anyone who knows anything about the game. As for Andre i can agree with you there.

Houston and Patriot fans. What excuses are you really talking about. Those players hardly even took a snap this year. I think you guys know that, and you are starting to make excuses. Matt L. I agree with you. Now there is a Patriot fan that really knows what he's talking about for the most part. Not too damb@#$%y at least you show a little respect. Mr RD you may have the #1 QB, But who is the Better out of the two. Ha ha yeah thats what i thought. Also what has A.Johnson done that Wayne hasn't already done. Both game are gonna be great games win or lose. Good luck to you all.

Thats a huge loss, Manning will have to carry the colts even more.

Indy should be use to not having Sanders, He's a good player, when he plays. The guy's a biscuit. Crumbles if he's hit to hard.

I'm a life long Patriots fan and it ALWAYS comes down to the Patriots , colts and steelers and this year is NO DIFFERENT. When was the last time Indy has gone to NE 2006 reg season?

Manning is to good to count them out. Like Brady, if you give him ANY time, your gonna lose.

Instead of adding a fourth TE, wouldn't the Colts be better served adding another DB. It might be time for Sanders to retire. He can't go more than two weeks w/o injuring himself.

Pats are a great team, but their fans are easily the most arrogant jackholes in the country.

For that reason alone, I'll take the Steelers, Ravens, Giants, and yes, even the Cowboys, over them in a heartbeat.

Hate to say it but the Colts need to look for a replacement for Sanders. He is, WHEN HEALTHY, a great player. However, this is a league, and a business where if you are not getting a return on your investments QUICKLY, you are getting beat with no mercy. The Colts so far have had some success without him, but there is a next level that MUST be taken; the Colts as ANY team with a mission statement to WIN must move forward and that means move on.
