Chargers: Public money probably needed for stadium

  • Print

SAN DIEGO (AP)—The San Diego Chargers said Thursday they probably need public money to build a new stadium on a downtown site just east of Petco Park.

The team has said since 2002 that it wants to finance stadium construction privately, although they have sought a piece of public land to develop and help pay for the stadium.

Previous sites under consideration would have accommodated both a stadium and a related development project, the profits from which would help pay for the costs of the stadium.

Chargers attorney Mark Fabiani said Thursday that because the downtown site is just bigger than 10 acres, it would accommodate just the stadium and no related development to help pay for the stadium.

That would require other sources of funding, in addition to $200 million from the Chargers and a hoped-for $100 million loan from the NFL, Fabiani said.

Fabiani said the team, which plays at aging Qualcomm Stadium in Mission Valley, wants to put any stadium measure onto a public ballot.

Fabiani said it’s too soon to say what other funding sources may be available. A redevelopment agency is sponsoring a financing study.

“Nonetheless, we believe it is important for everyone to understand that the downtown site might require some sort of taxpayer subsidy,” Fabiani said.

Such a subsidy would only be possible if voters agree that an investment downtown will result in significant returns for taxpayers elsewhere, he said. The city could save the $300 million or more taxpayers will pay through 2020 to maintain the Qualcomm Stadium, Fabiani said, and the city could sell, lease or otherwise generate hundreds of millions of dollars of revenue from the 166-acre Qualcomm site.

I think a new stadium in the downtown area, partially financed by public money, would be great for San Diego, but I'm afraid there are too many small-minded, right wing, Republicans in San Diego who will oppose any such proposal because of their infantile "government is evil" beliefs. Let's hope these radicals don't prevail. As a Charger fan since the early 1960's, I'd really hate to see them go.

Choker fans are the most fairweather fans in all of the nfl. Just ask one how many games he or she has been to.

Raider fans are complete goobers. The VAST majority of them don't know sh*t about football and just like to dress up like Adam Lambert. If you get into a debate with the average Raider fan, just ask him to name 5 players on his team, then just enjoy what happens.

Chargers will make it to the Superbowl this year.
They may not win it - but it will be enough to get a new stadium passed by the voters.

Al Davis will be gone soon and the Raiders will move to San Antonio.
The will change their name to the Alahomos.

Lets look big picture, beyond the Chargers, the Aztecs,( maybe pro soccer team ), Holiday bowl, Poinsettia bowl, Pro bowl, Super bowl(s), major concerts... Get the picture? We San Diegans think so small, the convention center is a prime example, as soon as it was built it wass already too small.
Lets build the biggest stadium on the west coast!

I gre up in Sand Diego County and I must say Charger Fans are a joke! Such fair weather really affects your judgement. At Least The Raiders won some Super Bowls. So Oakland is having it tough but when the Chargers were going thru Coaches and Qb´s in the 90´s we were the laughing stock of the NFL and do Not forget the Ryan Leaf and Eli Manning what other teams can tell those kinds of stories? Alex Spanos was the worst owner in Pro Sports! I take an Al Davis any day over Al Spanos. His son is a vast improvement. One more thing the Super Charger song has got to go!!!! If the Bolts bolt to L.A they will then be the second Cali team to do so...the Raiders were there first.

Faider fans are so pathetic, always living in the past. The thing FAIDER fans "love" to say is well how many superbowls to the chargers have. Well the last time the faiders won a superbowl I was 8 years old, damn that was a long time ago. I know faider fans that love to talk about superbowls and the funny thing is they were not even born yet. Oh how times have changed, now your beloved faiders are the laughing joke of the NFL. GROW UP AND STOP LIVING IN THE PAST

Yup, I guess the Chargers aren't the strongest team out there...oh well.

I guess I'll just hang out at the beach drinkin' margs and watch teen tail walk by wearin' nuthin' but a thong and a smile. Time to burn a blunt and tap some tourist trixie. "Yeah, sure you can honey, but don't try to fit it all in your mouth at once, and wipe me off when you're done, ok?"

Damn, gotta go, waves are pumpin' up at Cardiff. Oh, I forgot...Yeah, Chargers, whatever.

ps: Hey RaidaFan, how can you even afford to go to any games anymore? I mean, ammo is now sooo expensive and your Parole Officer ain't takin' no stinkin' bribes. Peace out.
Oh, and tell one of your 'homey' mule beotches to get into his Camino and shag his skinny a$$ down here pronto with the Chronic we ordered before we get right-wing pissed and install turrets and mines at the border.

Trypl3 3reez... did you read your post? you sound like a ^&*&^%$ retard. I'd take some time to let you know what a dumb f*&k you are, but sandiego2d already did a pretty good job of that. Mostly i just wanted to let you know he wasn't the only one out there that knew you were stupid, and that the raiders truley are a laughing stock. GO BOLTS. They'll be kicking raider ass again in just a few months.

Considering the economy, the fact CALIFORNIA is broke, the unemployment rate will continue to increase, houseing prices will continue to decline, -----you can be sure that NFL ticket prices are going to have to come down....

A new stadium is not something taxpayers are going to approve & new stadiums don't get built without taxpayer money

Raider fan since '79....... you became a raider fan in the middle of thier superbowl success, hope you didnt get hurt hopping on that bandwagon. Your a basic Raider Fan.... but I will say this in response to your comment..... 1) You type at a third grade level, and being alive since atleast '79, thats impressive (again, basic Raiders fan) .... and 2) we are stupid for putting stickers on our cars and supporting our city's team? I wouldnt expect you to understand how that works, because.... well..... we all know where the raiders are. L.A. to Oakland, funny how thats an upgrade. How does it feel being the laughing stock of the NFL...... check that.... professional sports? At the Hockey owners meetings they sweat the hell out of thier sport being in a miserable situation, but then one owner says "Atleast we arent the Raiders"........

Ok, the raiders do have more super bowl rings then the chargers. how many of you were alive when they won those super bowls??? right now though, the chargers own the raiders. its been like 10 games in a row that the chargers win. as for you charger fans, you guys only like the team when they win. remember the 90's and early 2000's, the games were getting blacked out on tv because nobody would buy tickets to go to the games. all of a sudden the chargers have winning seasons, and everybody is a charger fan.

we have, what u call a franchise qb. raider fans wouldnt know about that. So when u have one of those, 5-6 win seasons are highly unlikely. That title goes to u guys, my bad, u guys cant even get to 5!
