Bengals are running, playing D like AFC North foes

CINCINNATI (AP)—Turns out the Bengals are pretty good copycats.

In only half a season, they’ve changed their identity. Instead of trying to win games with fancy passing, they’ve adopted the ways of the Pittsburgh Steelers and Baltimore Ravens, who have won championships with solid defenses and dependable running games.

The Bengals (6-2) are beating them at their own game.

“I think Baltimore and Pittsburgh have set the tone for the AFC North and were the ones to come up with the formula, which is good solid defense, run the football and control the field position game,” quarterback Carson Palmer(notes) said Monday. “I think that is something we have turned into.”

A 17-7 victory Sunday over the Ravens kept the Bengals in first place, heading for a showdown next Sunday in Pittsburgh. The winner of that game will control a division that has a reputation for bruising defense and brawny running backs.

These Bengals are starting to fit the profile.

The defense has allowed only 17 points in the last two games. With Cedric Benson(notes) leading the way, the running game has piled up 361 yards in wins over Chicago and Baltimore. Sprinkle in some well-placed passes by Palmer, and it’s been a familiar combination for fans in other AFC North cities.

In Cincinnati, they haven’t had this for years.

The Bengals last reached the Super Bowl during the 1988 season, when Boomer Esiason joked that he had become a glorified triple-option quarterback because he spent most of his time handing off to Ickey Woods and James Brooks. Cincinnati led the league in rushing that year and was 15th in defense.

When they drafted Palmer in 2003, the Bengals had a reputation as a finesse team. They broke their drought of 14 straight years without a winning record by going to the playoffs in 2005, when Palmer threw 32 touchdown passes and the Bengals overwhelmed teams with their passing game.

It didn’t work for long—they haven’t had a winning record since.

“We used to be an air-it-out, explosive offense, and when you play in Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Baltimore and Cincinnati, you get to those December games and you can’t throw the ball 40 times,” Palmer said. “You have to be able to run the ball. We are at a good point now.”

After the offense finished last in the league in 2008, the Bengals revamped their attack to feature Benson. They loaded up on running plays that require extra blockers, and the players noticed the coaches’ commitment to it.

“They said at the beginning of the year that we want to be a run-first, throw-second football team,” center Kyle Cook(notes) said. “You’ve got to be able to run the ball. You can’t rely on sitting back there and hoping guys are going to get open.”

Benson has four 100-yard games and ranks second in the NFL to Tennessee’s Chris Johnson with 837 yards. He has carried the ball a league-high 198 times.

The last time the Bengals finished a season in the top 10 in rushing was 2000, when Akili Smith struggled to complete throws and Corey Dillon’s(notes) running provided the bulk of the yards. After the win over Baltimore, Cincinnati ranked ninth overall in rushing.

“They’ve been doing a great job,” defensive lineman Domata Peko(notes) said. “Cedric has been running amazingly. I’m pretty sure he’s going to be in the Pro Bowl. And when you have Carson healthy, he can do those things.”

The defense is coming off solid games against the Bear and Ravens. It is ranked 14th overall but is second against the run. Cincinnati last finished in the top 10 in defense in 2001, when it was ninth overall.

Coach Marvin Lewis coordinated the Ravens’ defense that led it to a Super Bowl championship during the 2000 season. The Bengals’ defense has played two of its best games this season against Baltimore, allowing only 14 points.

Although it was impressive, Lewis tried to play down the importance of the win that kept Cincinnati in first place.

“Everybody seemed to make it a bigger game than it was,” Lewis said. “It was another game in our division, and that’s what it was—no more, no less. For whatever reason, people thought we were playing the ’68 Packers, and we weren’t. It was another game in our division, and that’s what it’s all about.”

I have to reference an earlier comment that was made:

"Bungals,,,,,,,,,, Chad Ochosinko....... just another example on how sad the bungals are as a franchise.. He is such a cry baby. Win something,,,,then talk. "

Jasonl...........in case you haven't noticed, the Bengal's ARE winning and in case you didn't know........they beat the Steeler's today..............playoffs, here we come! I have been a Bengals fan for years and have stood by them through every season, bad and good...........and it has been mostly bad. Let the Bengals fans celebrate their victory and give credit where credit is due!

Pittsburg took advantage (as they should) of a hapless Denver team with an inept defensive effort in the 2nd half. First half Steelers only had 28 yards on the ground and the only score they could muster was a defensive TD. Mendenhall was able to run around the left side at will with pretty good weak side seal blocks. Ty law didn't even know whereto go! Turnovers by a very confused QB gave the Steelers all they needed to make it work.
Now I ask you, do you honestly beleive this will happen to the Bengals? Please tell me you have more to offer me than weak side seal blocks and scrambling QB throws against a confused secondary. Tell me you have more than QB mistakes that will help you win this game!
The Bengals will win this game - not with surprise "no-huddle" tactics, or trick plays, but with sweat, and grit, and a punch-you-in-the-mouth" effort!!
Then the Steelers will play the Ravens twice, ONE OF WHICH THEY WILL LOSE, and be looking up for some help to be the wild-card choice. The era of Steeler dominance has ended...
    WHO DEY!!

Bengals are a very good team, but I think morons like JP are going to be eating their inane comments after Sunday. The Bengals, Steelers and Ravens are probably the best teams in the AFC, but because they play each other twice, it opens up things for the Colts and Patriots, like getting a week of rest in round one of the playoffs.

Steelers should beat the Bengals next week. I'm not so sure the Steelers will sweep the Ravens again like they did last year. Although it wouldn't shock me if they did and if the Steelers repeated as Super Bowl champions.

I'm not here to bash the Bengals. They're a solid team. You can't be 3-0 against the ravens and Steelers and not be a very good team. It's just that the Steelers are better. Plain and simple Bengals fans. The Bengals have done a great job of turning their franchise around. They look like a playoff team. It has to be a nice feeling for a change. The Steelers conversely have started to look like Super bowl Champions that they are. They've struggled at times this year, and still have not played a complete football game. And yet The Steelers and Bengals are tied. I know, the Bengals own the tie-breaker, which in november means absolutely squat. If the bengals don't win next sunday, every bengals fan, (all three of you. Sorry. I couldn't resist taking at least one shot) and every Steeler fan knows exactly what that means. The Steelers will win the AFC North and the bengals will be scrambling for a playoff spot. Which, I frankly think they'll get. Because as I said before the Bengals are a solid team. Just not as good as the Steelers. Steelers 27 Bengals 16

I find it interesting that a story about the Bengals turns into a BengalBash on behalf of the few literate Steeler fans. Methinks thou dost protest too much (and too soon).

As a lifelong Bengal fan who knows the Bengals play 5 of last 8 and three of final 4 on the road I know its an uphill battle. A win this Sunday means a 2 game (3 with tiebreakers) with 7 left and a trio of games at OAK, and host CLE and DET. Steeler win equates the same old song for the Marvin era -- start losing and keep losing. Do I want the orange and black to sing WHO DEY in the dirt patch? Absolutely. Is it gonna happen? Nope (again)

    Final Pittsburgh 27, Cincinnati 10.

(Of course if I am wrong my wife is making me wear my Carson Palmer jersey to work on Monday)

Zack, who the hell cares about the Bears, right now? The Bengals will lose tthe AFC North to the Steelers, this Sunday, and that's the beginning of the end for them. No AFC Wild Card for the Bengals, either, especially with the Chargers and Jets coming up, and the Bengals can't beat either one of them. This Sunday, new leader in the AFC North- PITTSBURGH STEELERS.

Zack, The Steelers beat the Steelers against the Bears and against Cincy.

Pitt is a championship contender year in and year out so your statement doesn't hold up.

Pitt is 6-2 with the toughest part of the schedule behind us.
Pitt 12-4 at the end of the season! AFC North Champs!

Cincy's schedule gets tougher for the rest of the season. When you end up 9-7 and miss the playoffs you'll be singing the blues as Cincy almost aleays does!

MichaelP, when throwing out a comment about the Bengals losing to Houston, keep in mind that the Bears beat your Squealers while the Bengals went on to beat the Bears 45-10. I'm not stupid enough to sit here and predict Sunday's outcome, but it'll be closer than you probably think. I'll never understand why Squealer fans think that since their teams have been great in the past, that somehow relates to this year's team. yea yea go on and talk about last year that's fine, but every team is different every year

NEWS FLASH: This Sunday, the party is over in Cincinnati- the Steelers beat the Broncos 28-10, last night, and are out for blood. Showdown in the Ketchup Bottle, and it should favor the defending World Champions. There will be no sweep for the Bengals- the Steelers take this game, reclaim the lead in the AFC North and remain there for the rest of the season. For the Bengals, it'll be the beginning of the end. Having already lost to the Texans, they also have to deal with a very tough Vikings team in Minnesota, the resurging Chargers in San Diego and the Jets in the New Jersey Meadowlands. The Texans are dealing with the Titans, but will get back on track, but the Chargers are also challenging for one of the two AFC Wild Cards, and chances are, the Bengals will once again, be on the outside looking in and miss the playoffs.
