Quinn back in saddle for Browns

  • Print

BEREA, Ohio (AP)—Brady Quinn(notes) and the Cleveland Browns are right back where they started.

Benched by coach Eric Mangini just 2 1/2 games and 69 pass attempts into the season, Quinn will start Monday night’s game against the Baltimore Ravens, the team he was facing on Sept. 27 when the former Notre Dame star was yanked at halftime.

Quinn’s got his second chance. Now he must make the most of it.

“I’m excited to play,” he said. “I’m excited to be part of Monday night.”

Quinn never worried about getting another opportunity. He was confident it would come. Patience is the one thing he has mastered during his short pro career.

“That’s kind of how I’ve learned to live life, at least in the NFL,” he said.

Mangini’s decision to switch back from Derek Anderson(notes) to Quinn wasn’t met with overwhelming support in Cleveland’s locker room. Several Browns players interviewed on Wednesday said they were unaware of Quinn’s return to the top of the depth chart.

With his team at 1-7 and showing little progress amid growing speculation about his future, Mangini may as well give Quinn another look to see if he can get things going. Quinn can’t do any worse than Anderson, who was a disaster in five starts.

Anderson posted the NFL’s lowest passer rating (36.2) and was unable to crank up Cleveland’s offense, which to this point has been outscored by the New Orleans defense. Mangini said it wasn’t all Anderson’s fault, but there was no way the Browns could continue in reverse.

“In fairness to Derek, there were a lot of things that played a part in this,” Mangini said. “Were there throws that he missed? There were some of those and reads that could have been better. But I really like Derek. And I really like the way he handled himself.

“I don’t think by any means this is some sort of final statement on who he is. I think it is an opportunity to continue to grow and I’m sure he will.”

Anderson politely declined an interview request before practice.

Quinn was hoping that his 10 quarters as a starter would not define his 2009 season. Since being drafted by Cleveland in the first round two years ago, Quinn has had to sit and wait for his chance to take over the Browns, the team he has loved since he was a boy.

But after beating out Anderson in training camp, Quinn’s first season as a starter was abruptly interrupted in Week 3. He was given the hook by Mangini once, so is he worried about it happening again?

“No,” he said. “I mean, why should I be concerned? I’ve been through it before and I understand the adversity that comes with that. It’s not something I’m scared of.”

He’s not saying so, but Quinn may be a little nervous about the Ravens (4-4), who are coming off a 17-7 loss to Cincinnati and have dropped four of five after a 3-0 start. Baltimore can’t afford to lose more ground in the AFC North and Ray Lewis(notes), Ed Reed(notes) and the rest of the Ravens’ attacking defense will be out to make life impossible for Quinn.

“They’re always angry,” Quinn said with a laugh, “at least when I watch them on film. They’re a solid defense. We’re expecting the same on Monday night.”

Mangini said he’d like to stick with Quinn for the remainder of the season. Mangini has seen positive development in Quinn, who never lost confidence and worked hard in the weeks he was behind Anderson.

“I think his overall control of the offense has gotten better,” Mangini said. “I think especially over the last two to three weeks he’s been very efficient as a passer and I’ve liked the things he’s done. There are a lot of tools in this offense that are available and I’m looking forward to him using those.”

It’s not clear what “tools” Mangini was referring to on an offense ranked 30th in scoring, 31st in total yards and 32nd in passing yards. Since Quinn’s last start, the Browns traded star wide receiver Braylon Edwards(notes), leaving rookies Mohamed Massaquoi(notes) and Brian Robiskie(notes) as the club’s primary targets.

Quinn didn’t go into details about his relationship with first-year offensive coordinator Brian Daboll. Despite denials, there have been rumblings that the two have not gotten along. Quinn was asked if he and Daboll had a heart-to-heart to patch up any differences.

“Can you rephrase what heart-to-heart is?” Quinn joked. “We’ve talked. The past is the past.”

Quinn’s benching may have been a costly one. If he had played in 70 percent of Cleveland’s offensive snaps, escalators in his contract would have earned him nearly $11 million this season. That’s a near mathematical impossibility now, but Quinn is more concerned about adding a win to Cleveland’s paltry total.

“The season’s only halfway over,” he said. “We’re going to do our best to try to fix things and move forward.”

Hey Poster 631: I have been to that rathole Cleveland, and it is a dump. Why are all the downtown business moving to the burbs? Why did Sea World leave Cleveland? Why did the hometown newspaper, Plain Dealer, move to the suburb of Brooklyn? Why has you city been bankrupt for 20 years?
Why did that rat hole let the real Browns leave?
ANSWER THAT QUESTION MORON, WHY LET THE ORIGINAL BROWNS GO. Do not say and write platitudes about that crap hole city when they let their best resource leave town. Defend that city for doing that. Lets see how smart you really are. It is ironic, when expansion teams went to Charlotte / Jacksonville, they were immediate contendors. Look at what happened to the Browns after expansion - a joke, then a bigger joke, now is 3 ring circus that even God Almighty could not repair.

My my my this team is a mess. What the heck did the Browns see in Mangini in the first place? Hiring him was a whopper of a mistake. Quinn or Anderson--it doesn't matter. This team is crappy and going nowhere fast. I actually feel bad for their fans. BTW who on earth decided Derek Anderson, a journeyman back-up at best, was worth the monster contract he got? He may be playing worse than JaMarcus Russell in Oakland if that's possible--yikes!!

Whats with all the Brady Quinn haters? The dude is a regular guy, trains hard, plays hard and wants to be a part of this God awful franchise. Go back to his first season when sh#tbag DA went down late in the season for a drive. Quinn comes in drives down the field, Braylon and Kellan each drop a td they settle for a fieldgoal. 2nd season he takes over for that malaka (DA) against the broncos, has a solid first start, defense blows the game they lose. Next start has a medicore game against buffalo, breaks his finger on his throwing hand never complains and finishes with the w. Next start he has an bad first half against houston, visible his hands a mess and he's shutdown for the season with hand surgery. Season 3 jerko#f Mangina takes over and turns something simple as a young qb and team rebuilding and turns it into a media circus. Hires the worst offensive coordinator and juggles the team all preseason and names Quinn the starter days before the season begins and rides him two games. Th team sucks, its rebuilding, give the kid a chance. He has a rough start playing against a few elite teams to start the season and then you yank him for suckbag again so you dont have to pay him his contract. Derek Anderson is a joke, a horrible football player and athlete. His rating was just around 35, how many chances and excuses to you make for this dildo? Quinn has five legitimate career starts, let him play. If Mangina had any clue he would've played the kid the entire season and evaluated his progress at seasons end. If I remember all the greats who inherited the starting jobs on rebuilding teams were awful there first seasons. Lerner do whats right and fire your pathetic coach, play the kid and see if theres any future here. Sad days for browns fans.

Common Sense rips on Cleveland yet he lives in Southern California and calls our people ghetto rats, thugs, and neanderthals? Anyone ever been to Southern California? That place is wasted.. You guys got things all backwards out there. You are ripping on people who actually have to work for a living who stay true to there colors and no matter how bad our team sucks we still stand firm. Maybe if your values out west werent so degenerative you would understand what its like to be a true fan of the game and a true fan of your team. I meen granted our front office in Cleveland might be the worst in the NFL. Mangina is a terrible coach he needs to go. But to rip on the fans man?? Really?? Must be tough out there living in SoCal man envious of a city that actually has a football team to support. Atleast bocci ball is a hit out there isnt it?? Get real man your state was on the verge of bankruptcy.. What does that make you?? A food stamp champ??

Brady Quinn sucks, even at Notre Dame, he never had the ability to lead a team. He could only beat those he was supposed to. Maybe he should have spent less time doing laser hair removal and more time working on being a QB. I hope he feels the pain, my fantasy D is going to have to crush him for me.

    Mrs. Common Sense,
Have you ever even been to the city of Cleveland? I doubt it. There are top notch football, baseball, and basketball venues. A thriving downtown district with tons of nice hotels and restaurants, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and soon to be tops notch Medical Facilities, and a Casino. Where exactly are you from that is so great?
Browns fans are the BEST fans in the entire NFL. We actually support our team through good times and bad, (mostly bad lately) not just buy a bunch of their merchandise after they win the SuperBowl (most Steelers fans).

and we have the greatest basketball player in the world.
    GO CLEVELAND!!!

Is anybody confused that the Browns gave Quinn the hook for no other reason than to keep him from earning the incentives in his contract?

Honestly how does any athlete feel good playing for that organization. They were literally willing to throw away the season by starting a guy who posted a QB rating under 40 rather than pay Quinn an extra incentive that they'd agreed to in the contract.

    Weak... so so weak.

Prediction: Not very hard, but Baltimore just got run over the Bungles. Do you actually think the Clowns will do the same? Anyway Prediction. Poor Brady Quinn gets to play after that Cinci game.

Brady Quinn survives game even though Ray Lewis is introducing himself to Brady repeatedly. Ravens are going to have a huge chip on their shoulders.

Remember the Ravens are actually playing to reach playoffs. The Clowns are playing for draft position.

Final score Ravens 35 Clowns 3

However, Clowns will score first and give fans hope, but next position Quinn is intercepted and returned for a TD. Game over

mangini wasn't starting quinn to avoid an 11 million hit on the salary cap.right now da has 70%of the snaps, quinn has29%.if quinn starts the last 8 games he should end up with more than 70%of the snaps the amount he needs to hit salary escalators.this is mangini's vindictive way to stick it to the the browns on the way out the door.the salary cap takes a hit and you can't trade a below average qb with a high contract.
