Mangini not tipping hand on QB

  • Print

BEREA, Ohio (AP)—The bye week didn’t change Eric Mangini. He’s still keeping secrets.

Cleveland’s coach did not reveal his starting quarterback for next Monday’s game against the Baltimore Ravens. During the Browns’ bye week, Mangini said he would announce “early next week” if it would be Derek Anderson(notes) or Brady Quinn(notes) under center on national TV.

On Monday, Mangini said he will wait until Wednesday before making his QB choice public.

“I know where I’m headed, but we’ll talk about that on Wednesday,” Mangini said during his news conference. “I haven’t talked to the quarterbacks about it yet, so that’s part of it.”

Anderson’s poor play in recent weeks might prompt another change. He is the NFL’s lowest-rated quarterback with a 36.2 rating and is coming off a 6-for-17 performance with two interceptions in a 30-6 loss to the Chicago Bears. Since taking over for Quinn in Week 3, Anderson has thrown two touchdown passes and nine interceptions while going 1-4 as a starter.

His rating in the fourth quarter is almost hard to believe: 3.1.

Anderson, who took over when Quinn was benched in the second half of Cleveland’s third game at Baltimore (4-4), turned down an interview request as the Browns (1-7) returned to the practice field after getting a few days off. Quinn spoke to reporters but had little clue about Mangini’s plans.

“I have no idea,” he said. “I’m looking forward to trying to get better today and I’ll take it day by day. That’s really all you can do at this point.”

Mangini’s secrecy is nothing new. He didn’t announce Quinn as his starter for the season opener until an hour before kickoff.

There’s no doubt Quinn would like another chance to show what he can do. He came in for the final series against the Bears, mop-up duty that could have just as easily gone to Brett Ratliff(notes), who has yet to step on the field this season. Quinn completed nearly 60 percent (46 of 77) of his passes during his 10 quarters of action, which came against Minnesota, Denver and Baltimore. The Broncos have the league’s top-ranked defense.

Given another chance, Quinn isn’t sure what he could do differently.

“I don’t know,” he said. “Looking back in the series that I had, I felt pretty comfortable with my decision-making with a couple of exceptions. I would just try to go out there and get better and make something happen.”

It may not matter who runs Cleveland’s inept offense. The Browns have scored just five offensive touchdowns, two less than the New Orleans defense. The Saints have outscored the Browns 303-78. It’s as if they’re playing another sport.

And as the never-ending QB saga drags on, the Browns returned from a bizarre bye week that included general manager George Kokinis’ mysterious dismissal without any more information being provided about his ouster.

One week after Kokinis was relieved of his duties, the team has yet to explain the circumstances surrounding his departure after just nine months on the job.

Owner Randy Lerner wants to bring in a vice president of football operations, an overseer who could help clean up a franchise in need of a makeover. That person’s role would be similar to the one held by Bill Parcells with the Miami Dolphins.

ESPN.com reported that Lerner intends to contact former Seahawks coach Mike Holmgren, who stepped down after last season to spend more time with his family.

Lerner said in an e-mail response to The Associated Press that he would not comment on “rumors/speculation.”

Holmgren has said he wants to return to pro football. He held dual titles of coach and GM with Seattle for four seasons before being stripped of his management duties before the 2003 season. Last year, Holmgren said he was envious of Parcells for having a cushy executive position.

Mangini, who has come under fire halfway through his first season with Cleveland, said Lerner’s search for a football czar would not be a distraction to him or the team.

“There’s so many things that come up during the course of season, really like any other part of what you’re teaching, it’s very important that you focus on what’s important,” Mangini said. “What’s important for us is what we’re doing on a daily basis and our preparation for the next opponent.”

Mangini said he continues to have discussions with Lerner and that he has no misgivings about adding a proven football mind.

“What I believe in is that anybody who can help us be successful, whether it’s a player, coach, whoever it is, I’m open to anybody who can help us improve,” he said. “We’re always looking to do that.”

As for Holmgren, Mangini refused three times to address direct questions about the Super Bowl-winning coach.

“I don’t have anything else to add to what I said before,” he said.

Well, I cannot believe the followers to my thoughts about the Browns and their lousy franchise, dead beat owner, pathetic city, and no talent players. More / more are agreeing with me and it really irritates you die hard ghetto moron fans. The Steelers and Patriots are from progressing cities and therefore the teams are successful. Cleveland, Oakland, Detroit, St Louis, Buffalo are all ratholes and their teams suck also. See the correlation. Jacksonville and Tampa Bay are exceptions because people in Florida do not care about PRO Football - only college. SO BROWND LOSERS, LIVE WITH THE FACT THAT YOUR TEAM WILL BE PATHETIC FOREVER!

Tom F. you seem very knowledgable about the men who of own, and run NFL franchises thats why I cannot understand why you disagree with me. Both Dan Snyder, and Jeff Laurie accumulated wealth in the private sector and made more money than they could ever spend in 10 lifetimes. Therefore, as a hobby, a passion, and a way to spend and enjoy their wealth, they bought NFL franchises. These men know nothing other than putting their minds to a task and doing whatever necessary to accomplish the goal. Rrandy Lerner is not this type of owner. Randy Lerner doesn't care what me or you think, he's a trust fund baby. He inherited the Browns!!! He likes soccer any damn way!!! Randy Lerner has so much money it doesn't matter if the Browns win or lose, he doesn't give a damn! And even if he did he is too stupid to even know how to build a winning franchise!Sell the team to somebody who cares!!!!!!!!Get it over with!!SEVERE TIES! TAKE THE MONEY AND RUN!!!!GOODBYE!!!!!!

Excellent strategic move by the genius! I'll bet the other team has no way to prepare for the awesome offense of Cleveland. Couple that with possibly the two worst performing QBs in the league and those Browns are really toying with the Ravens. I'll bet they can not sleep and will be extra tired trying to figure out which quarterback around they should plan their defense. I'll tell you this Browns coach is brilliant...watch our Lombardi, Bill In New Englad, Tom Landry, Don Shula and of course Paul Brown, this Magini is something special and what a strategist.....BRILLIANT, Oh too bad the home town what get to see his success on Sunday......they can't fill the stadium for a Monday night game so the game will be blacked out......So no one will see this magnificent strategy play out...........Oh the fans are planning to boycott anyhow......great show Coach, way to keep em guessing

Steelers are a great team, but half their fans are bandwagoners who were nowhere to be seen when they sucked. You win a Superbowl and they all come out f the woodwork.

I believe that Mr. Art Modell should buy this team also and move it to Hoboken. He is a very wise and shrewd businessman who just happens to know what it takes to build a solid and effective NFL franchise!! No one wants to play in a dirty, stinking, rathole of a city where the rats are more literate than the fans!! Go Browneyes Go !!!

This is a young owner who made a rookie mistake. Give him the chance to correct it. If he names a (another) moron to run the football operations, then we know we have an idiot for an owner and are in for many bad years. That's the time to revolt. Remember, he hired Ernie Accorsi as a consultant last time and then listened to Mangini and not Accorsi in naming Kokinda. If he names a legit GM this time (whatever the title), then we'll know he isn't Dan Snyder. As Browns fans, we can only wait and hope for the best. Robert Kraft was a terrible owner early on and, while still quite obnoxious, learned how to be a good owner. You can say the same about Jeffrey Laurie in Philly as well, although in that case he may have just gotten lucky with Andy Reid. The Browns are due for some good fortune.

Nothing will change until browns fans revolt, and riot until Randy Lerner is forced to sell the team. He inherited the team from his father Al. He is not a football fan let alone a Browns fan. His main focus is some soccer team he bought overseas, and spent mega millions on. He doesn't live in Cleveland, doesn't address the media, fans, anybody! Supposedly he flies in on Sundays, watches the Browns, then leaves. He is as clueless of how to turn the Browns into a respectable team as he is careless. It doesn't matter to him, and it's not his passion. Sell the damn team to somebody who does care, is not a trust fund baby, and has some pride in succeeding. DAN GILBERT are u out there??? Will you please buy the Browns????? How about Steinbrenner?? He mad his fortune in Cleveland, and has to have some fondness for the city!

This is the NFL...not your backyard pick-up game. Yeah mangini, Im talking to you. Everyone makes mistakes, but, even a dog learns from them, WHY CANT YOU? Your supposed to be THE COACH of an NFL TEAM. But, all your doing is EMBARASSING YOURSELF, and in return EMBARASSING the CLEVELAND BROWNS. Mr, Lerner, you stated, your going to turn things around, is this your interpetation of that? Why, do you let an incompetent coach, pose as the Savior for our BROWNS? You can see, this dog {mangini}, is reverting to his OLD TRICKS. Enough said.

News Flash: Eric Mangini refused to name the starting QB, the Browns practice location, the Browns next opponent, and the location of the training facility bathroom key. Given when he used this strategy with the Jets, expect to see Col. Mustard start at QB. With a monkey wrench.

FIRE EVERYONE!!! except rob ryan and a few defensive cordinators. Give ryan the chance he deserves, he has a better system and knows how to motivate players. Mangina thinks he is playing madden 10 or something, if he had any idea of trading quinn he would have done this by now. theyre gonna let quinn play a few weeks, offense is gonna stall because all the playmakers were traded away and then reinsert anderson the final few games. why? 70% is what quinn needs for the escalator to kick in. not gonna happen!! anderson is gonna be cut, not traded(no value) also his contract is not fitting for his role with the team or his talents. quinn will be the starter a year or two more, if not stay with cleveland as a back up. it will be atleast 2 years before a solid qb is coming out of college, this years QBs are nothing more than backups, and busts. so hold on brownies, this is gonna be a rough one!!

It's sad state of affairs the Browns are in right now. I'm a Giants fan, and if Big Blue was going through this, I'd have to burn my Giants hats! (Granted, the Giants aren't doing well right now, but I'm a fan and always will be).

Mangini shouldn't be allowed to coach a drunken backyard flag football game, much less an NFL team with such a great history as the Browns. He was an a$$ with the Jets and he's an a$$ in Cleveland too. He should've stayed as assistant with the Patriots and learned everything there ever was to learn from Bill Belicheck, but he didn't.

In general, these coordinators move on to a head coaching job WAY before they're ready these days. Case in point - The Rams. Steve Spagnuolo was a great Giants defensive coach, but he took the money, became a head coach, and now the Rams still suck! And I won't even get started on the Jim Zorn debacle in DC! There's a lesson to be learned there, I think...

IT ONLY TOOK 3 TO 4 MONTHS FOR YOU LOSERS TO DUMMY UP! Lets get a roller derby team for Cleveland and have the matches in the football stadium.
