Jamal Lewis plans to retire after season

CHICAGO (AP)—Cleveland Browns running back Jamal Lewis(notes) plans to retire at the end of the season.

Lewis told reporters after the Browns’ 30-6 loss Sunday at Chicago that his 10th season will be his final one, adding, “When I talk, I mean what I say and I think you all know that.”

Lewis, who missed two games in late September and early October with a hamstring injury, ran for 69 yards on 16 carries against the Bears. That gave him 349 this year and 10,456 in his career, helping Baltimore win the Super Bowl as a rookie during his seven seasons with the Ravens.

He served prison time while with them in 2005 for using a cell phone to set up a drug buy five years earlier, and besides the off-the-field issues, there were questions about his durability and speed when he signed with Cleveland before the 2007 season.

Lewis answered those by running for 1,304 yards that year, his best since leading the NFL with 2,066 in ’03. He followed that by going for 1,002 last season, the seventh time he reached the 1,000-yard mark, and with the lowly Browns at 1-7, his career appears to be coming to an end.

“It is very hard,” he said. “Very. I think this is my last year. I think this is it. Honestly, the way it looks, you know, I had a good run.”

Lewis acknowledged that finishing with the Browns stuck in a miserable season is not the easiest way to go out.

“But at the same time, I stuck my neck out and wanted to come in and help and do what I could do, even though I knew the consequences,” he said. “I knew what we had and what was going to go with it, being that you do have new people coming in, new coaches, new staff, and all that—there’s a lot that comes with that.”

Not a big Browns fan, but I root for them whenever they play teams I don't like. My "fan" icon has evolved into a "Player" based adulation. Players like Jamal are in that group.

Agreed, Mangini sucks. Hell, Lou Holtz could do better. There are definitely problems with the staff and front office. They draft Quinn more for ticket sales than winning football games. And the offensive line can't open a can of soup, let alone holes for the running backs or protect the QB.

Being much older, I can remember Brown, Graham, Kelly, and others. The folks in Cleveland need to figure out a way to reincarnate Paul Brown. And they used to have a receiver corps second to none.

My sympathies go out to Cleveland, they were once a feared team. A team that could win on any given weekend and against any given team. Not today, though. They have gone from a force, to a fizzle.

...This is just one example of the fans in Cleveland being sh*t on by the greedy scum that own the pro teams here, with the possible exception of the Cavs. These owners will continue to milk the fans as long as they are willing to keep spending money to see stiffs play. However, one day, they may find the stadiums empty...

@110 I don't think he will be remembered that way but he was a bull of a back in his prime. I would be very surprised if I find him one day in Canton.

as a lifelong Browns fan at age 50, i remember our team before the expansion. people can say all th bad they want about us we used to put a quality team on the field every sunday. these are not the Browns, no talent, no pride, no desire, the ravens should have been able to keep the name and history of the Browns.

Being a big Ravens fan, I kind of resented Jamal a few years ago when he left. It might have been an injury but he really seemed to half ass his last couple of years as a Raven. I was glad when he was let go and surprised that he had such a good first year in Cleveland. When it's all said and done though I respect what the guy did for the Ravens, he and Stover were the offense for the earlier part of the decade. There's no reason for him to keep playing, he's got his ring and Cleveland is a long ways away from even being a playoff contender. I wish ya well Jamal!!

I am suprised that he has as many yards this season with the way our line can't block or open up holes. Cribbs has the outside speed but does Harrison has the size and strength to run it up the middle? We still have the O line problem.

Jamal lewis broke my cousins arm so bad (Ten-vs-Wyo ten's "homecoming" aka set up game)he had a living cast for 6 months, ended his football career. The guy has power, I always held a grudge for what he did to #3 plus playing in baltimore it was easy to hate him. He was a good back before cleveland though, I'll give him that respect. Anybody who believes he was better than bettis is insane though, bettis was never the best back but he was always a huge asset to his team and ended it on par with elways retirement.

His last year is no doubt miserable, but he did win a Super Bowl his first year. Many players can't say that.
