Fan protest fizzles at Browns game

  • Print

CLEVELAND (AP)—A planned fan protest seemed to fail as Cleveland Browns Stadium was three-quarters filled before Monday night’s kickoff against Baltimore.

Two die-hard Browns fans, disgusted with the direction of the 1-7 team, had urged fans to stay away from their seats for the start, hoping it would send a message to team owner Randy Lerner.

There were thousands of empty seats for the opening kickoff, but it was difficult to know if they were because of the protest or late-arriving fans. The notorious Dawg Pound bleacher section—where the protest’s organizers normally sit—was at near capacity.

Heidi Nicklaus of Cleveland seemed to sum up the sentiments of the majority of the fans and took issue with the boycott’s organizers.

“If you’re a fan, you’re a fan,” she said. “If you’re not, go find another team to root for. You should be in your seats for the kickoff. I’m a fan. I’m going to my seat.”

Dan Kelly, who grew up in Cleveland and now lives in Akron, thought the boycott was a good idea. Kelly, who is 60, has been attending Browns games for 40 years. He wore a hockey goalie-type mask similar to the character that frightened people in the movie “Friday the 13th.” The phrase “Wait Till Next Year” was written on the mask.

“I’ve looked at this stuff since I was a kid and it’s always wait till next year,” Kelly said.

Kelly, a barber, talks with fans every day and thinks their frustration with Lerner, who also owns the Aston Villa soccer team in the English Premier League, is boiling over.

“They think Lerner’s more interested in his soccer team,” Kelly said. “They think he’s playing with the fans. You shouldn’t play with the fans.”

Kelly is glad Cleveland has one thing in its favor.

“I’m more of a Browns fans than a Cavaliers fan, but thank God for LeBron (James),” he said.

Justin Miller(notes), who lives near Youngstown, thought the boycott had some merit, but won’t abandon his team.

“I’ve been in the military,” he said. “I’ve traveled all over the country and all over the world. I’ve seen Browns Backers clubs almost everywhere I’ve gone. It is frustrating, but I’ll never give up on the Browns.”

The two fans who initiated the protest online recently met for two hours with Lerner.

Is this surprising from a team that is 1-7 that the fans would FAIL at a protest?

WHo does that effect/hurt? In fact it might benefit the owner.... You paid for the ticket and are probably under the stands buying a hot dog and beer instead of going to your seat. This best thing you could do is hit them in the pocketbook... dont buy tickets, if you are a season ticket holder, arrange with others to take fewer cars and dont let the owner collect as much parking revenue.... dont buy anything at the concession stand... dont buy apparel... arrange to have everyone wearing another color...arrange for everyone to be quiet for a certain time (no boo's no cheers)

going all the way back to comment #1, I grew up in Cleveland, moved near baltimore right after the browns left the league to become the ravens, you as fans can be jack asses too. So shut the f%#*& up and keep your comments to yourself, Ozzie needs to come back home where he belongs, Cleveland needs him not Baltimore anymore!

As a Ravens fan living in Ohio for the last couple years, I have noticed that Browns fans are the biggest jerk-offs in all of sports, even worse than arrogant skankee and squeeler fans. You still treat us all like Satan even though the NFL made sure you got a new team 2 years later and your ugly colors and stupid name back. I guess 40 years of consistently lousy teams (with a couple unfruitful playoff seasons in the 80s) will do that to you. I hope the clowns continue to suck forever so I can go to the Ravens games there for $10-20. That's quite a creative offense Mangina put together Monday night. We're playing the Colts this week. Even though they stole our name and colors, I still don't find it necessary to treat their fans like crap. I guess that's what winning a Super Bowl and being consistently good does.

I'm a Bengals fan & my fear is that none of the Bengal's issues will be confronted due to having a sucessful season. I still despise Mike Brown & we still need a GM.

While I admire someone who will show up good or bad, what is wrong with showing the ownership you as a fan have had enough? If enough people join the protest, he will notice it on his bottom line. You wouldn't go to a restaurant over and over that serves bad food would you? Why should you blindly keep spending your money to watch bad football?

The state of ohio is a football state and its a shame to see the browns basically used as AAA team type organization. Leadership starts from the top down. Therefore if randy lerner doesnt want to win sale the team. Get out of the way and let someone else who obviously care try to win. People say that the fans shouldnt of protested....What?! Are you crazy?! Why not protest?! obviously nothing else has worked so why not protest. Being a Browns fan is like standing next to a door and banging your head against the door thinking you can open the door that way eventually your gonna be so stupid and get a concussion or you can use your hand and open the door. Stop abusing yourselves for an organization that doesnt truely care about the fans or winning. Be honest look at the plays being called do you think theyre honestly trying to win? There are more steeler and bengals fans in Ohio...I wonder why.

Im sad to say that I have never seen a good browns team. I thought the draft lottery was supposed to eliminate the problem of a team being terrible forever. What are they doing with their draft picks and trades. How do you end up wit nothing? Maybe Quinn was tired of getting pounded on all game and decided he needed to hurt someone too. I can't wait to see Lions vs Browns. Go Colts.

Cleveland has a rich historic football heritage. IT WILL HAPPEN. We need to put strong leadership in place to turn this around. If Mr. Lerner would read this I would beg him to fire MANGINA and open the wallet for Holmgren to come in and build a team this fine city deserves!!

Heidi Nicklaus summed it up perfectly. go find another team to root for, lousy boycotters. you're used to losing, so a transition to the Oakland Raiders would fit you boycotters quite nicely.

Walking out on the team is stupid, Protest the owner, the coach, But the players are the ones taking the beating for piss poor management and crappy coaching. The Mangini hire was as dumb a move as I have seen. I see Falcons fans cry about losing a game and wonder if they understand what it is like to be a Browns fan, Or lions, Or Raiders, Or Bucs.......Try that and than complain. The Browns have some of the most loyal fans around.

I lived in Cleveland in the late 80's. Kosar, Mack, Byner, The Cube, Slaughter, Langhorn, Matthews, Hairston. Those Were The Days. Would love to see them get back to that level because Cleveland truly has some of the best sports fans in the country.
By the way Greg #566 it was the lake (Erie) that caught on fire
