Cribbs: it’s ‘unlikely’ he’ll stay in Cleveland

  • Print

CLEVELAND (AP)—Pro Bowler Josh Cribbs believes it is “unlikely” he’ll play another game for the Cleveland Browns. Insulted by the Browns’ latest contract offer, Cribbs intends to clean out his locker.

“It’s unlikely the way they’re talking right now,” said Cribbs, stung by the team’s latest $1.4 million annual offer. “I’m hurt because I don’t want to play for nobody else. But the way they’re talking, they’re leaving me no choice.”

Cribbs, who sat courtside at Wednesday night’s Cleveland Cavaliers game, was the Browns’ most valuable and popular player this season. He played wide receiver, quarterback and returned and covered kickoffs and punts. The former college QB also set the NFL career record for most kickoff returns for touchdowns.

“The season is over, so I doubt they’ll take me seriously now,” Cribbs said. “That’s what I get for playing hard for my team. I don’t want to come off as greedy, I just want what’s fair. They’re going to do this to me?”

Agent Peter Schaffer said that the Browns failed to live up to previous promises they made to Cribbs. Schaffer said there is “no more middle ground” and that he is “extremely shocked” that new president Mike Holmgren would not understand Cribbs’ value to the Browns.

“I have tremendous respect for Mike Holmgren,” Schaffer said. “I know he knows how to put a team together. I was optimistic that with him coming aboard that he would understand and that Josh would be rewarded. To see there is no change in their position is insulting.”

Schaffer said he gave the Browns until the end of the business day to come up with a better deal than the $1.4 million per year they offered. Cribbs has three years remaining on a six-year, $6.77 million deal.

But Schaffer said Dawn Aponte, the team’s vice president of football administration who handles contract negotiations, did not get back to him. The Browns could be excused with more pressing issues since Holmgren just took over on Tuesday and is in the process of deciding whether to bring back coach Eric Mangini.

Cribbs said last month that the team had promised to give him a new contract by the end of the season. Even in the days leading up to Cleveland’s season finale against Jacksonville, Cribbs remained optimistic that something would get done.

Not anymore.

“I did all the playing I’m going to play on this contract,” he said. “I ain’t doing nothing, I’m not showing my face until it’s right.”

Schaffer and Cribbs’ other agent, J.R. Rickert, said they did not want to take things public, but that the team left them no choice.

“He’s not playing there anymore after getting treated that way,” Rickert said in a text message.

On Tuesday, Holmgren said he had contact with Cribbs’ representatives when he was at home in Arizona. He intimated that he planned to take care of Cribbs, but only after fair negotiations.

“I believe players should be rewarded for what they do,” he said. “I have no problems with that at all. What happens though on occasion is our view of how much that should be and the agent’s view of how much that should be differs. We have made an effort.

“We will continue to make an effort to handle Josh’s situation. I want Josh here.”

"You need to fire your dam agents that had you sign that contract
and sit down and tealk to the need front office. "

Ummm, that's exactly what he did-
he FIRED the agents who negotiated that contract!
then he tried to sit down and talk to the team about his contract situation (if that is actually what you were attempting to convey; the lack of any syntax in your statement leaves that somewhat vague...)

Please pay attention before you start trying to make a point
using 'facts' that are widely known to be untrue.

however, I agree with your assertion that contracts in the NFL should be performance based...
unfortunate that those are not currently the norm...

    reply to Thomas:
"I'm sorry but its time for Cribbs to man up. He signed a contract!!!
If he were a ho hum player would the Browns be able to renegotiate his contract to pay him less?
    I think not."

    Actually, they could do better-
they could just cut the player outright and pay him nothing.

Again, people, please at least do some web research before you keep making these incoherent and unfounded assertions. Likewise, you could read the article in question and just a few random comments, and you would quickly find the vital information you lack- before foot goes in mouth. It ain't too difficult now...

"jujst because he is does not mean that you can just throw away a contract that you sign a few years back. "

The problem with that is in the NFL contracts aren't guaranteed. Teams cut players who don't perform all the time and they don't get all the money from the contract they signed only the signing bonus.

In my opinion that's why NFL players have the right to hold out, unlike NBA/MLB players their contracts aren't guaranteed anyways so you have to get paid while you can.

Bill Polian, you want to get the Colts fans back on your side... tell the Browns you will pay the man and trade a #1 for him and you will have the fans back in your pocket. Indy will have one of the last picks of the first round and will end up paying someone in the $2 mill/year range anyways... might as well be someone who is proven and can change games.

Cribbs is one of the best players on the Browns and jujst because he is does not mean that you can just throw away a contract that you sign a few years back. You need to fire your dam agents that had you sign that contract and sit down and tealk to the need front office. 1.4 miillion dollars is a nice raise and see about getting incentives in there for TD's, ProBowl, tackles on special teams, etc. This is the way all athletes should be paid instead of a huge deal then no production. We need Cribbs and he will play here again or we better get somebody good in a trade. GO BROWNS and GO BUCKS!!

Well the contract he signed before wasn't good. what ever happened to honoring your contract. I think he probably should be making more money, but he signed the contract.Come on is he really going to sit out and not get paid for three years ,i don't think so. Give him a five year deal worth 4 mill ayear then cut him after two years when he starts breaking down.

I'm sorry but its time for Cribbs to man up. He signed a contract!!! If he were a ho hum player would the Browns be able to renegotiate his contract to pay him less? I think not. If he does not want to play for what he agreed to be paid then I think the Browns should just let him sit and make nothing. The Browns have had enough of those kind of players. The Browns need to spend money on players in other areas not waste it on a player all ready under contract that wants to cry he is underpaid. I guess it must be tough to live on a million plus year. I feel real sorry for him.

$1.4 million / year going forward for someone of Cribbs talent (especially when you consider how underpaid he's been the last couple years) is a completely ridiculous offer, and I can understand where Cribbs statements are coming from. However, Cribbs has almost no leverage. He either plays for the Browns for the next 3 years or he sits out completely. The Browns can replace him with someone else, even if that person is only 50% the player that Cribbs is. What other job and Cribbs get where he's be paid even 10% the amount the Browns are offering? He won't be traded and he can't become a free agent. He signed the contract. And while I'm sympathetic to NFL players contract situations since they are non-guaranteed, its still up to the players to weigh these risks before signing long term contracts like Cribbs did. Hopefully both sides will come to their senses and the Browns will get him a $3 - 4 million / year deal that will at least satisfy him for the last 3 years of his deal.

Forgive me if my blogs came across a little harsh. It was not directed at all Browns' fans...just the ones that do not understand how much Cribbs is worth to your team. Without him, at least three of their wins this year would have been losses. He's a very talented player and would be a great addition to any other offense in the league. (I'd hate for him to end up in New England or Indy)

Although he may not be a #1 or even #2 WR just yet, he still has a great sense of awareness in the open field. That's an attribute that usually comes natural and cannot be easily taught.. Once he's given the right direction (Holmgren), he should transcend the status of great kick returner and become an equally elite WR as well.

Vincent Jackson of the Chargers is a perfect example. Granted, V-Jax (what we call him here in San Diego) was never a kick returner, he still took a few years to get his game together. Now he's a viable threat to every defense the Chargers face. With the right leadership (and kept content), Josh Cribbs could be considered the same someday.

I was insulted when i read this article,if he leaves i will be disgusted!believe me we recognize talent, its easy to see talent when we have 1 superstar on the team.all im sayin is dont direct your hostilities towards the fans because anyone who thinks #16 is expendable is not truly a Browns fan.Front office,u better make this right!

I agree with everyone else......pay the man!!!!!! My question is where were his agents 3 years ago when he signed the contract? They didn't do their job. They thought that was the best deal Cribbs could get. Granted, Josh Cribbs has turned into a great special teams player, but that is it. He is NOT a receiver, he is NOT a runningback, he is NOT a quarterback. I think the new regime should build the offense around getting Cribbs the ball. Let him run out of the wildcat the way they ended the season. Let him throw a little more out of the wildcat and for the love of all that is holy in this world will someone, anyone teach him to be a receiver. He is listed as the number 2 receiver and he had only 20 catches this season. How many times was he targeted? Pay the man, but first create the player worthy of the contract you are giving him. Devin Hester is OVER PAID. Don't compare Cribbs to Hester. There is no comparison. Coach and create the player for all that follow to say "I want Josh Cribbs money"

This is total BS...they're going to draft some unestablished punk in a few weeks and pay him more guaranteed money in one year than Cribbs is asking for for 5 years....screw the Browns, no wonder they suck harder than a Dyson Vaccuum.

I put it in a different perspective.

I would rather pay a player (still in prime) who has proven themselves in the NFL as Cribbs has than the way it is right now wit all these Drafted Rookies getting the Big Pay for College play. Cribbs I understand wasn't even drafted.

You know what jac4075? With attitudes like that...Cleveland will continue to draft in the top 5.

Cribbs is not your average, run-of-the-mill player. He's a game breaker and a game changer! Just ask the other 31 teams that would gladly pay him at least $2 million/year for his services. Have you ever heard of Momentum? Even his returns that don't go for TD's are encouraging. His teammates get fired up from it.

His returns also helps with field position...a key component to winning close games. Example...if it wasn't for Mike Scifres spectacular punts pinning Indy down (in the Charger/Colts playoff game last year) inside the 10 yard-line, they probably would have won the game. Cribbs does the same with his kick returns by giving Cleveland a short field to work with. It makes a big difference to only go 30 yards for a score (FG or TD) than it does to drive 70 yards for the same points.

And he's not Boo-hooing as you put it. He's just asking to be paid fairly. And your example player should probably be compensated also. However, leading the team with 91 tackles isn't very impressive. Some players have 15-20 tackles per game. So much for making your point with that guy...
