Anderson back at QB for Browns

  • Print

BEREA, Ohio (AP)—Two years ago, the Cleveland Browns turned their woeful offense over to Derek Anderson(notes) and won 10 games.

Eric Mangini can only hope it happens again.

With his first season in Cleveland already unraveling, Mangini benched Brady Quinn(notes) in favor of Anderson, who rode a similar opportunity in 2007 to an appearance in the Pro Bowl. The Browns (0-3) have scored just one touchdown and 29 points in Quinn’s three starts, and Mangini has seen enough to believe Anderson deserves a chance to show what he can do.

Mangini benched Quinn at halftime of Sunday’s embarrassing 34-3 loss in Baltimore. He brought in Anderson, who was able to move the ball with more consistency.

“What I’m looking for is for us to improve offensively,” Mangini said. “I’m not by any stretch saying it’s been all Brady. That’s not the case at all. I just think Derek did some things that were positive, and we need to improve in that area and I think he can help us improve in that area, and that’s really what the decision is based on.”

Anderson lost a summer-long competition to Quinn, the former first-round draft pick from Notre Dame who some Browns fans have been begging to see get a chance since he was drafted. But Quinn has yet to produce big plays or points and Mangini couldn’t wait any longer.

Quinn couldn’t have anticipated losing his job after just 10 quarters. He was asked if he had ever been demoted at any level.

“No,” he said. “Never. It’s tough to deal with, but you have to remain confident in your abilities. We didn’t play well as a team and we didn’t win those games as a team. That’s how you have to look at it, how you have to react to it. I kind of have to change roles a little bit and be the best team player I can right now.”

Quinn may have lost his job, but he’s holding onto his confidence, however shaken it may be. He said he didn’t try to make a case to stay ahead of Anderson on the depth chart.

“Our head coach is the one who makes decisions,” he said. “This isn’t a courtroom, we’re not presenting cases. My opinion doesn’t matter in that case. The biggest thing is we’ve got to do better things across the board for us to win.”

This is all new to Quinn, but Anderson has been through it before.

He lost a training camp competition with Charlie Frye(notes) in 2007, but after the Browns were trounced 34-7 in the season opener, Frye was traded to Seattle and Anderson promptly led Cleveland to a 10-6 mark and barely missed the playoffs.

In his first game, Anderson threw five touchdown passes in a 51-45 win over Cincinnati.

The Browns host the improved Bengals (2-1) this week, a fact that made Anderson smile when he was reminded about what happened the last time he was promoted.

“It’s kind of weird how it happened like that,” Anderson said. “I’m going to go in and I expect myself to play well and lead these guys and do what I can. I don’t think what we’ve done can be fixed overnight, but over time we can. If we continue to do good things, it will all work out.”

Anderson’s return as starter could help wide receiver Braylon Edwards(notes) most. Edwards caught a club record 16 TD passes in 2007 from Anderson, whose high-velocity arm can stretch a defense.

Edwards outwardly downplayed the QB switch, but there’s no hiding his chemistry with Anderson.

“You know D.A., he’s a guy who likes to throw the deep ball, likes to get the ball out,” Edwards said. “I like to run deep routes, so it’s natural he’d look for me in those situations.”

Anderson came in last week with the Browns already trailing 20-0. He forced a few balls trying to get Cleveland’s offense moving and threw three interceptions. Anderson, who has been wildly inconsistent in the past, was asked if he felt he had nothing to lose.

“We were down 30,” he said with a laugh. “Yeah, I threw some balls in places I had no business throwing. If it’s a 7-3 game I’m not doing it. I was just trying to bring some energy and try to be positive with everybody. We talked about it and I made some bad decisions. I thought overall it was pretty good.”

Mangini’s move with his QBs could backfire on the Browns or it could get them turned around.

Edwards is sure of one thing.

“To be honest, we can’t do any worse,” he said. “It sounds maybe bad to say, but I don’t think we can play any worse than we did. I don’t think we can go out there and lose another 34-3 game. I just don’t see it happening.”

Mr Common Sense...it is SO sad that you find the urge to write on any blog about the Browns. It is especially sad as you hate the city and the team and its fans. My recommendation is that you get off your computer, get out of your house, meet some people and get a life.

Hey IceBergSlim, Post 342 - You have your head so far up your ass, you need a glass belly button to see. You better go to the free clinic in your ghetto, and get you blood pressure checked before you have a heart attack or stroke. The Potters field cemetary in Cleveland (where all the indigent ghetto rats are buried) is the biggest one of its type in the country. Even Elliot Ness, once Police Commissioner in Cleveland committed suicide after he left Cleveland. Speculation was that the FBI was going to send him back to Cleveland and he took the smart way out. Face it you potato heads, the potato between your ears is mashed. Your city is the worst, team the worst, owner the worst but some good comes out of everything. Without your city, team, or owner, late night Comedy TV would be boring.

"That part of town in one big barrio out to W96th Street." WRONG AGAIN!!!!, and you have the nerve to call my post indefensible. Actually there's alot of diversity on the west side of Cleveland. More whites have moved into that area. Do your research before you sh!t on my city, that's all I'm trying to tell you. You're entitled to your opinion. Grow a set of balls and stop crying because I corrected you. " You positions are always indefensible, so you (like all your ghetto trash welfare Democrats) resort to character attacks and swear words." CHILD PLEASE!!!, then you tell me to jump of the Valley View Bridge? "WHY NOT DISPUTE THE FACTS LOSER." Take your own advice. Just because you read about Cleveland on Wikipedia and can name a few landmarks, doesn't prove anything. You're still a crackhead!!!!

Who cares who lives in Cleveland, I thought our society had Matured enough to aleast keep your racism to yourself. The fact Cleveland is one of many cities around the country hurting economically, Goes to show how much the goverment has failed it's own citizens. Maybe the fact that so many kids drop-out, is a reflection of the lack of funds going to education. We do have a never-ending war for those fortune 500 companies to benefit from, so health care and education are just not important enough. As for the QB's - do you want a QB that can scramble, complete passes, but can't move the offence because of poor play calling - and a lack of weapons. Or, DA who might get you down the field alittle more - but you have to add in all the int's he will throw, lack of touch on the ball, and a sitting duck in a pocket that slams shut faster than the owners wallet. It's either go and buy a team that can win, or rebuild. This patch work we try every year is just making the holes in our team bigger.
So which will it be?...... I'm guessing since attendance will be poor, and we will have local black-outs for home games. Lets start trading for some picks. First round, not this trade down and we will throw in a 6th round pick. As far as the Kosar comments, It's just a stupid comment. His analysis during pre-season games is good, Yes he sounds drunk. But to see DA come in for the second half - I had to get wasted.

Hey IcebergSlim, Post 338: Another class response from a ghetto rat 3rd grade educated moron. WHY NOT DISPUTE THE FACTS LOSER. You positions are always indefensible, so you (like all your ghetto trash welfare Democrats) resort to character attacks and swear words. Do you want to talk about the West side of Cleveland (little Puerto Rico). That part of town in one big barrio out to W96th Street. Then we have the very large section of town, where the Barney Franks, and Ellen Degenerates live. Finally you get to Westlake, where there an no ghettos or barrios. Or do you want to discuss the I77 south of Cleveland corrider that looks like the movie "Escape From New York" was filmed in. Do us all a favor. If you cannot comment on the facts of the articles and postings, jump off the Vally View Bridge. Face it, Cleveland is on life support, and the Browns will be pronounced dead after Sundays Game. The autopsy on the Browns will reveal they died of no talent, aids, no class, no coach, and no owner.

Hey IcebergSlim, Post 332: Thanks for the history lesson. History of what - Clevelands east side ghettos? I comment primarily on Browns articles because of the whacko responses from their faithful under educate fans. Another US Dept of Education survey stated that of the top 50 American Cities, Cleveland had the lowest percentage of college graduates, and the highest percentage of high school dropouts. FACTS ARE FACTS. You meat ball browns Fans have got to eventually accept reality. Imagine your home town being worse than places in Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, West Virginia, and Tennessee. Do not criticise me - ALL YOU BROWNS LOSERS SHOULD TAKE A LITTLE WALK IN THE PARK (IF YOU CAN FIND ONE OUTSIDE A GHETTO AND NOT GET MURDERED), AND CLEAN UP THE CITY FIRST. START BY PICKING UP ALL THE TRASH ALONG I 90 EAST ANS WEST OF TOWN. IT IS LIKE DRIVING THROUGH A GARBAGE DUMP.

To: Browns Fan, Post 335: Real imaginative post moron. CANNOT TAKE THE HEAT ABOUT YOUR RATHOLE CITY AND LOSER TEAM. To bad weasel, you and you alternate life style partner Barney Frank will just have to tough it out. Sooner or later, the Browns will have a winning record, just like they did when the had that "special draft" to get that loser Bernie Kosar. The NFL and Art Modell fixed a draft so the loser Browns could get Kosar (another idiot Cleveland resident like Baby Quinn), and how many champioships did he win? NONE YOU EINSTEIN! Criticise me because you cannot accept the facts. Except the reality that the Browns and Clevleand are the afterbirth of an atomic war and move on. It will help you deal with your mental illness because recognizing your limitations is the first step on the road to recovery.

Browns should draft Jahvid Best......they need running backs bad!!!!

They could have had Ma'aluga (sorry i butchered the spelling), but instead they drafted Robiske, who has yet to be activated. Give away draft picks, then get a center and two wide recievers. Nice

Get a linebacker id say if they don't get Best. Of course, they guys are probably all prima donnas, so they will draft a guard in the first round.

Thanks phillip e for bring me back to reality. I've been a Browns fan since I was 12 years old (1965), I've seen the first Super Bowl, I've seen, I quess, every bad thing that can happen to a cities sports teams. I'm just tired and frustrated. I'm not able to switch loyalties to another team, I tried and it did'nt work. So, if I stop supporting the Browns, I'll just be watching football. This truly is a sad situation that the Browns are in.

This is the 2nd most depressing day in Browns history, 2nd only to moving the team to another city and winning the superbowl there. /yes the bandwagon fans will remember the careless season of throwing deep passes to edwards who suprised most teams. Well teams are not fooled any-more. And the 3 int's DA threw proves that. If we are going to throw the season away, lets see what Ratliff can do. I know what DA can do - throw the ball a 100 MPH into thriple coverage or on a screen, Almost as imobile as Kosar, and never learns from his mistakes. Quinn did not have bad numbers, just nothing to work with. And the same retarded play calling as last year. Why did we fire one belichick wannabe for another. How does throwing for acouple extra yards, but 3 ints make DA the better QB. Atleast Quinn could run out-of the pocket alittle. All the Browns fans that said Lewis still had a couple years left in him, and we didn't draft someone like wells - Lewis will be injured on and off all season. DA when not throwing a int, will be sacked because he has not learned to just throw the ball away. I knew it was not going to be a great year, but we skiped practicing a entire game with both QB's because our brillant coach thought he was holding some Ace card by playing neither. Well that preseason game was obviously well needed. I really hope Mangini enjoys his short vacation spot in Cleveland, don't forget to visit the Rock and Roll Hall of fame on your way out.
I've not missed a Browns game since 83'. I'm so jaded by this organization from head to toe, I think its only fitting that the leage will black-out the home games when they don't sell-out. After 10 seasons of waiting for that magical play-off rush again, the fans will finally speak - I will not pay a ridiculous amount of money to see what I believe to be the worst team in the NFL. That kills me to say that. I don't think we have the worst players, we are just worst coached team. From all positions minus the special teams. We may as well pretend we are in 99 again, Accept we are over the fact we have a team again, and will not spend money just to be grateful. This is the most depresing news since the browns return. I love you brownies, but It's time for some tough love if changes are going to be made. Good-luck Vs. the bengals, a team of intrest to me now. I will cheer you on for our steeler weeks. But I will not support this organization anymore. I might still enjoy the tailgating, but I think I'll just stay in outside till we have something more than a exsperiment every week. Go Brownies, I wish you the best.

I just want to know why is this being ignored? Who made this call: 1st and 10, on the Baltimore 47 yard line, a quarterback sneak? This play show that the Browns coaching staff has no confidence in Quinn at the helm of this team. If you can't trust the quarterback to throw down field why is he at the position? I've seen enough of Quinn in Cleveland, possibly, he'll be a good QB somewhere else. However, it's already time for a change in Cleveland, it can only get worse with Quinn at QB. At least with Anderson we could get a few more yards. Maybe even TD. Obviously, this organization has been pretty bad at choosing first round QB's. Change stratgy, pick one in the second round too. Please draft Tebow with your 1st pick in the NFL Draft next year. I must be crazy, they'll proberly mess him up to.

What has Eric Mangina done to my damn browns now? Fire him , fire everyone, trade DA, trade Brady, Trade B.Edwards, Trade J. Lewis, if Shaun Rogers wants to complain trade his fat ass to. Get as many draft picks as you can. Hire a Cowher or equivalent coach. Too bad we got rid of our only play maker Winslow, he seems to be doing great in Tampa that has mediocre at best QB's throwing to him. Get A. Boldin and Brandon Marshall so we can have some guys that can catch a ball. Then draft all Defensive players and some prospect Qb's. Something's gotta get done I need a team to root for in the NFL and I'm unable to jump boat. If they lose to the Bengal's this weekend I'll blow my head off

I watched Quinn play every down at ND and his biggest problem is that he has never been able to look off of receivers very well, and secondly throws a poor long ball. He was lucky at ND, he had two very tall receivers that could go up and get his ally oop long ball throws. You can't get away with that crap at the level he is at now. He also hangs onto the ball way too long because of his indecisiveness in looking off the receivers. He is a tough kid, but definitely not improved yet at this point in his career.

Quinn will be back. He is a top notch quarterback who has been held in check not just by a lousy offense but the coaching staff. He completes 6 - 8 passes but is not allowed to throw down field. He can move much better in the pocket than Anderson and should be allowed to throw while rolling out.. Anderson comes in firing and throws 3 interceptions. Look at Aikman, or whoever. They were allowed to play and grow with the team. They were not under a microscope. Again he will be back, maybe not with the Browns but he will be back. Finally for the guy who mentioned Jurgensen how soon he forgets Billy Kilmer keeping him on the bench. Throwing deep does not win Superbowls (e.g. Ken Stabler vs the Mad Bomber Daryl Lamonica).
