Portis’ start streak ends for Redskins vs Broncos

  • Print

LANDOVER, Md. (AP)—Washington Redskins running back Clinton Portis’(notes) streak of 40 consecutive starts came to an end when he was inactive against the Denver Broncos because of a concussion.

Portis held the longest active streak among NFL running backs. He was injured in last week’s game at Atlanta.

Ladell Betts(notes), who had been questionable with a sprained ankle, was active for Sunday’s game and was expected to start in Portis’ spot.

Also among the inactives for the Redskins were tight end Chris Cooley(notes) and offensive lineman Mike Williams. Both have ankle injuries.

Denver’s inactive list included defensive lineman Ryan McBean(notes) (knee), safety Josh Barrett(notes) (hamstring) and right tackle Ryan Harris(notes) (toe).

Here we go again...the Broncos start out strong and seemingly find ways to lose games that true playoff contenders are expected to win. Granted, nobody really expected the Broncos to compete as well as they had with the 6 - 0 start; but, it is really hard as a Broncos fan to keep seeing their team once again squander opportunities or fold in the second half of the season. Some people may argue that key players got injured; however, come on....really? Trick plays? Really good teams have depth or find ways to compete and still win games. You can't keep relying on the arm strength or throwing game and put the pressure on your Defense to play spectacular ball every week. NOW is the time when good teams rise to the challenges, find balance in both running and throwing, keep the games close, and finish strong or at least demonstrate they deserve to go to the playoffs. Based on recent results, the Chargers are going in the right direction and the Broncos in the opposite! Sorry to the faithful, but this Broncos Team have shown their vulnerabilities, and will be lucky to finish at 500 if they keep playing at this level.

Well, they beat my (former) 6-2 Broncos today. The Skins weren't the problem today, my Broncos were. We already had a slap in the face (actually three in a row from Ravens, Steelers, and Redskins)---now our QB is hurt?!? Terrible....just a sad day for Bronco fans everywhere.

I agree with post number one...unfortunately, Snyder will make sure to draft somebody horrible at quarterback like Clausen, they will pick up Larry Johnson to answer their runningback problems (and overpay him), and then hire Charlie Weis as their coach.
