Orton misses 3rd practice with ankle injury

  • Print

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP)—Kyle Orton(notes) missed a third consecutive practice Friday because of a sprained left ankle and has only an outside chance of playing Sunday when the Denver Broncos and San Diego Chargers meet with first place in the AFC West on the line.

Broncos backup Chris Simms(notes) again took first-team practice repetitions, as he has all week in the absence of Orton, who was injured during last week’s 27-17 loss at Washington.

Simms is in line to make his first start since September 2006, when he suffered a life-threatening spleen injury while with Tampa Bay.

Listed as questionable, Orton will be put through a workout before Sunday’s game and how he performs will determine whether he plays, coach Josh McDaniels said Friday.

“If Kyle is completely able to do what we’re going to ask him to do in the game plan, and can do it at a level that allows us to be successful, then we could give him an opportunity to play,” McDaniels said. “If he’s not capable of playing at that level, or doing some of the things that we need him to be able to do, then you go with the guy who practiced.”

McDaniels said Orton “absolutely” still has a chance to play, though he conceded playing him without the benefit of any practice during the week was much less than ideal.

In a somewhat similar scenario a week ago, Simms was thrust into the lineup in relief of the injured Orton with little or no preparation. The backup had a rough go, completing 3 of 13 passes for 13 yards and an interception. In the case of Simms, though, it was his first significant action since undergoing emergency surgery more than three years ago to remove a ruptured spleen.

Simms said Friday he was approaching the game as if he was going to start and he felt better prepared to play at a high level after a week’s worth of practice.

“If needed, I’ll be ready,” Simms said. “I know I haven’t had a great deal of playing time the last few years but I think a lot of guys saw what I did in training camp and the snaps I got in the preseason, and hopefully they are as confident in me as I am in myself.”

McDaniels said he and the rest of the team have a great deal of faith in Simms, who worked through a long, difficult rehabilitation to restore his health to where he could play again.

“I think it’s hard not to have a great deal of respect and appreciation for what he’s been able to overcome,” McDaniels said. “We have a lot of confidence in him and I know the coaching staff does and the players have practiced that way this week. We expect to play well if he’s playing. I think the team feels the same way about him, and we’ll embrace that situation if that’s what we’re doing.”

Tight end Daniel Graham(notes) said it’s not like he and his teammates are starting from scratch with Simms because they got a chance to work with him extensively during training camp. That’s allowed them to quickly make adjustments to his style this week, including getting used to catching balls with the differing spin of a left-hander.

“We’ve had a good week of practice with Chris in there,” Graham said. “He’s been doing a good job of leading this team and continuing where Kyle left off. We’ve all had the chance to catch balls from Chris this week, and if he gets to go on Sunday, we’ll all be ready.”

For his part, Simms would like nothing better than to put an exclamation point on his comeback.

“I’ve been through a lot,” he said. “I’ve always loved the game of football a great deal and to have it almost taken away from me, and then to be back kind of in the mix of things, it’s a special time for me and my whole family. I’m excited.”

32-3 was close enough to my 34-17 prediction......

Donkeys suck ! JMac is a douche.... and once again the chargers own the AFC West !

    Raiders beat Bengals
    Chiefs beat Steelers

--so much for the ACF West being the weakest division......

Wow look at that exactly what I though. At least you guys got a field goal. 26-3 good game. Even with Orton in. So why don't you talk about ten years ago, cause that's all you have left.

post to robbie, you dont know what your saying is right, the chargers have been to the playoffs and thats the only place they have been, in the playoffs and only 1 time to the super bowl, so lets all let
the charges get to the playoffs and lose again before they even get to the super bowl

Post to Buddy, you know your right about the records you have posted and you know one other thing
your right about each of those years the bolts lost in the playoffs and if they get into the playoffs this year they will lose again before they get ino the super bowl, I agree with Suzie this is this year who cares about last year or 10 years ago when TD was runing all over San Diego and Elway was throwing the ball to the best TE and the best undrafted WR, but hey that was 10 years ago and we were beating the bolts 34 to 17 just about every game and I think we scored 34 on your defence
in the first game this year

I am a diehard Broncos fan. Denver won more games this year then I thought they would. I was not really sold on Orton after watching what he did in Chicago, so now its a waiting game for the next real QB in Denver.

    @ jeff ( post 173 )

... and you know how many strippers named Susie? BTW, where does it say that strippers can't be NFL fans?

Give the woman credit; she at least talks football. No, I am not defending her. She does not need me to defend her. I suspect that she is all grown up, and she can more than hold her own in a battle of wits with the likes of you.

I do, however, agree with her that this year is this year.

I also agree that Orton is not a franchise quarterback in the mold of Peyton Manning, but he can be an effective quarterback with a decent running name and not being injured.

    @ frankiespinosa68 (post 174)...

Sims played and was massacared in Tampa Bay. Their O-Line was so bad that several quarterbacks got severely injured. No one knows what Chris Sims is capable of doing. He was decent in college at Texas which is why Tampa Bay drafted him.

His being a southpaw could have benefits for the Bronco's, but he is going to need a running game to help him out. McDaniel obviously knows something that you don't.

James you are a sharp one. Did you read about how I said the chargers barely beat the raiders twice? Buddy I didnt ignore your comments. Is that your first post? I bet most all girls ignore you anyway. Buddy is a dogs name not a mans name. Thank god that you can do some research and produce facts. Good for you. TD most likely wouldnt of broke 1200 yards for another team and our improved D helped alot with the SB victories. I dont care about the past. Its all about this season. Im sick of the your team always falls apart as the season progresses BS. NEW SEASON. NEW COACHING. NEW LEADERSHIP FOR THE D. I dont care about the Shanahan era or before. I, like all of you thought my team would suck, questioned the new young coach (who has now impressed me) yes he is a keeper, thank you, and thought why in the hell do you get rid of a probowl QB? Well now I know. Cutler isnt a winner. Orton is. Cutler hasnt won anything since high school. The fact is that Orton has a winning % compairable to Tom Brady. Cutler gives you a better chance of a big play or a game changing turnover. He has more than 4 times as many INTS as Orton and about an equal number of TDs. Now im not saying Cutler cant be great but how long will it take him to learn he is on a team and doesnt have to win by himself and not try to force throws?. Jared has eating all the Subway sandwichs affected your intelligence? The only offensive positions the Chargers have that are better are QB TE C and LG. 4 out of 11. Thats just foolish. I was at the Patriots game and I got to tell you. Its not luck to beat 4 great teams in your first 6 games. Its ok. The smack talking is done and in about 11 hours we will all know where we stand. Good luck.

Saying it twice so People can understand. Wow should I say that twice too? Please read back a couple of pages into these comments before you all crucify me for going off on Susie. Susie slammed Charger Fans.(Myself included ) Therefore I felt the need to step up and show her that It will not happen without a fight. (Susie started the Genital comments and then had the nerve to try and cover it up by saying that kids comment on here) Ha Ha nice try Susie.

To Susie: I have been James for 45 years (15 internet years) and I do not pose as anyone else ever. I know who I am and I am damn proud of it.

You may want proof read your last post Susie because is states that if the Chargers get better coaching they might be able to beat the Raiders twice and then they will be respected. These kind of statements only make you look stupid as the Chargers have beaten the Raiders 13 times in a row now.

At least I am honest and will tell you that I am nervous about the Game today. Denver does still have an outside chance of beating the Chargers because of your Defense. The Chargers will have to be on top of their Game both on the Offense and Defensive side of the ball.

Denver fans are hoping that the Chargers go in and start slow. I just don't think that will happen this time. I believe this will be the best Game of the Week.

    Go Chargers!!!

Man, what is with all the hostility? I'm from San Diego and will always bleed blue and gold but I've known lot's of Denver fans in my time and they were always really nice. Let's live in the now people! Who cares what happened last year or ten years ago. This is about tomorrow. If Orton plays my hats off to him because I cringed last week when he rolled his ankle, but does anyone remember how he was doing before that injury? He had at least 200 yards and two td's in the first half, granted it was against the Skins but still. Say what you will about Simms but he is a stud coming back from an injury that could have killed him. Look for Denver to pound the ball with Knowshon Moreno and Rivers to air it out to V-Jack. Either way, it's going to be a good game but anyone's guess as to the outcome. Go bolts!

Scotty, how about we get some Raider fans in here and have them talk about Tom Flores and their run to the title in '82? Or when John Madden was their coach? In RECENT history, the Broncos have started HOT and faded fast. San Diego has gotten off to horrendous starts, even the 14-2 team started 2-2, and finished strong. Honestly the Chargers are a Marlon McCree Interception away from winning the Super Bowl in 2006, damn idiot thought he could return it for a TD instead of taking a knee and watching the Patriots head home for the summer, he tries to run the score up and fumbles it away, allowing Tom Brady and Adam Vinateiri a chance to win with no time left.
The Bolts may have come up short in recent years, but that speaks volumes to the talent, I mean come on Norv Turner is the Head Coach! Ted Cottrell was the D Co-Ordinator! Come on people, the players step on the field handcuffed and at a huge diadvantage EVERY game! Well except the ones vs. Oakland!
Regardless, Denver had their annual early season run, and now San Diego will return to their rightful and annual spot atop the division the remainder of the season.
And as for this column, I honestly want Orton to play! Chris Simms has something to prove to everyone and nothing is more dangerous then a man with nothing to lose, Orton just sucks, if it wasn't for that lucky swat Wk 1 the I wonder if Denver gets to 6 wins at all this season. McDaniels is a good young coach who knows how to motivate an outmatched team, he is a keeper, hopefully that is another fact that the Bronco faithful will miss!

Buddy, you've also incriminated the Chargers as not being able to win in the postseason. In your comparison years, the Chargers have gone to lose. The Broncos went to the bowl a number of times with Elway, and even though they have only won twice, they have been there far more than the Chargers have in their history.

the last time i checked the Broncos lost last week to the Redskins haha that same Redskins team that lost to the Lions. Chargers overall are better on offense at every SINGLE POSITION even WR, Vincent Jackson is better than Brandon Marshall and Im not even a chargers fan. The Broncos should have never gotton rid of Cutler u cant win with Orton your season is going to descend now that everyone figured Denver out. They wouldnt last against the Colts Steelers or Pats when its playoff time. So have fun Denver when SD takes the division yet again

Susie, how come you seem to avoid my comments? How come no Bronco fan wants to challenge me? You pick on poor helpless Charger fans who swear but seem to pass right on over my comments that destroy the fabric of your team.
The Broncos are a good team in the early stages of the season, when it comes time to tighten the belt and make the push for the playoffs the Broncos become soft and overmatched. It happens every year recently, just face it you are the NY Mets of the NFL! You had a nice run with Terrell Davis, Elway didn't win those titles TD did (he was awesome and unstoppable), when it was Elway's team the Broncos lost 55-10 to the 49ers it's a fact look it up kiddies, Elway has the numbers that are impressive but when the big game was there the Broncos never won. Mr. TD shows up and thaty Mile High Salute took control of the team and boom! Back to back Super Bowl victories, thank you TD for the rings, let's praise Elway forever and you get to drift off into the sunset with migraines for the rest of your life!
Again I will end on this:
2008 Denver stormed out to 4-1 and 8-5 only to finish 8-8 at home; San Diego 8-8 wins Divsion, loses in Divisional Round
2007 Denver started 2-0, ended 7-9 at home; San Diego 11-5 wins Division, loses in AFC Championship
2006 Denver started 5-1 (7-2) ended 9-7 at home; San Diego 14-2 wind Division, loses in Divisional Round
2005 Denver put it all together this year and won the division at 13-3! Jake the Snake Plummer threw for 3000+ yds and a 90+ QB rating with a 18-7 TD-Int Ratio. But what does that get Jake, the Arizona hero turned Bronco mountain man? Nothing, Elway won Super Bowls why can't you? But as you remember from earlier in this post TD won those Super Bowls, so let's see who did Denver pair up with Jake? Mike Anderson (a FB), Tatum Bell and Ron Dayne!
Bronco fans will not enjoy another Super Bowl because they place unrealistic expectations on a QB, Elway was great but even he needed a super-star RB to get a title! I hope you all never realize that and continue on your current path!
    2004

And Suzie there was no prediction for the chargers to win the super bowl, and if you knew anything about the chargers you would know we are a second half team, meaning we are just hitting are stride. The only prediction made was that since the chargers have WON the division so many times in the last couple of years they have a great chance of making the super bowl. That's it. If you want to look at predictions, look at it as the steelers look the best on paper therefore the steelers should be in the superbowl. Same as the chargers have made the playoffs so many times in the last couple of years they should be a contender for the super bowl.

Suzie your @#$% retarded, we are talking football and your making @#$% up in your head and talking about crayons. Look the broncos are playing like @#$% right now and the chargers aren't. bottom line, so say what you have to say, but the fact is. The Broncos just aren't that good THIS YEAR... So I get it when you don't have a come back you start making up stupid ass @#$%. But face it your broncos aren't the same team they were in week two or week three. Half your team is over thirty and can't keep up with the rest of the players that are in their prime. You guys are starting to get injured and it's getting worn down and it shows. Your offense hasn't showed up to a game since your bye week, and your defense is getting really tired of doing all the work.
