After 2 straight wins, Bills stay with Fitzpatrick
ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP)—Backup quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick(notes) will remain the Buffalo Bills starter for one more week, and maybe longer.
In announcing Trent Edwards(notes) will miss his second straight game since suffering a concussion, coach Dick Jauron on Monday opened the door for a midseason quarterback shuffle by refusing to commit to who’ll start once Edwards is healthy enough to play.
“We’ll cross that bridge when we come to it,” Jauron said, a day after Fitzpatrick helped lead the Bills (3-4) to a 20-9 win at Carolina. It was Buffalo’s second straight victory, and second in a row for Fitzpatrick since taking over after Edwards was hurt in the second quarter of a 16-13 overtime win at the New York Jets the previous week.
The Bills host Houston on Sunday then have their bye, which will either provide Edwards an additional week of rest or allow Fitzpatrick extra time to become more accustomed to the offense.
In another sign that Fitzpatrick may have gained the edge with the coach, Jauron forgot to even mention Edwards when reviewing his list of injured players.
“I’m trying to think if there are any more,” Jauron said, before a reporter reminded him about Edwards.
It was at that point, Jauron ruled out Edwards from playing. He added Edwards has been cleared to work out this week, but noted the team is taking a “conservative approach” in dealing with a player who sustained his second concussion in a little over a year.
Edwards has struggled, going 3-9 in the last 12 games he’s taken a majority of snaps. Fitzpatrick, signed by Buffalo as a free agent this offseason, by comparison has won five straight, including going 3-0 to close last year with Cincinnati while filling in for injured starter Carson Palmer(notes).
Fitzpatrick hasn’t exactly produced eye-popping numbers in going 21 of 47 for 239 yards with two touchdowns and an interception in place of Edwards. But the fifth-year player is being credited for being efficient by protecting the ball, for taking shots down field and producing scoring drives by taking advantage of a turnover-happy defense.
That’s a switch from Edwards, who had difficulty getting receivers Terrell Owens(notes) and Lee Evans(notes) involved, and had produced more interceptions (six) than touchdown drives (five) this season.
Jauron credited Fitzpatrick for how he “managed the game” against Carolina, even though the Bills offense generated 167 yards and nine first downs.
“The key thing in that game for us was that we protected the football,” Jauron said. “I thought Ryan handled the game well. I thought he put us into things we needed to be. They weren’t always successful, but he got us in them.”
Against the Panthers, Fitzpatrick finished 11 of 22 for 123 yards passing and a touchdown, when he threaded a 2-yard pass to Evans early in the fourth quarter. Another key play came on the following drive when Fitzpatrick hit Evans for a 50-yard pass that eventually set up Rian Lindell’s(notes) 29-yard field goal to put the Bills up 17-2.
All four of Buffalo’s scoring drives were set up by turnovers, including both touchdowns, which came after interceptions by rookie safety Jairus Byrd(notes).
A second-round draft pick out of Oregon, Byrd has five interceptions this season to rank second in the NFL, one behind Saints veteran Darren Sharper(notes).
The Bills are accustomed to midseason quarterback shuffles. That’s how Edwards got the job as a rookie in 2007, when he replaced J.P. Losman(notes).
Jauron, coming off three straight 7-9 finishes with Buffalo, is not afraid to make changes. In the two weeks leading up to the start of the season, Jauron fired offensive coordinator Turk Schonert and cut starting left tackle Langston Walker(notes).
NOTES: Jauron said starting defensive tackle Kyle Williams (knee) and fullback Corey McIntyre(notes) (ankle) are having more tests to determine the severity of their injuries after both were hurt against Carolina. Starting safeties Donte Whitner(notes) and Bryan Scott(notes) have a chance to play this week after missing Sunday’s game with ankle injuries.

Did you seriously just compare Ryan Fitzpatrick to Jim Kelly? Seriously? It's not like Fitzpatrick's a rookie. He has had previous opportunities and failed to succeed in them. What is there to make you think this guy has potential?
He's completed 44% of his passes for a little over 200 yards...IN TWO GAMES!! Just because the Bills happened to win doesn't mean that Fitzpatrick is some kind of football God sent here to save the Buffalo Bills.
Trent Edwards isn't great, he hasn't played well this season. But both QBs plays are comparable and I think Trent's stats speak for themselves. He is the more productive QB despite the nickname.
As for the "at least he knows TO and Evans are there" comment. How so? Evans caught a couple good passes. However, TO has had, statistically, his two worst games of the season besides the New Orleans matchup.
My point is. Just because you want Fitzpatrick to be successful. Just because you want the Bills to have a successful QB. Just because you expect better play than Trent. Just because you want Evans and Owens involved more. Just because you really hope the ship gets turned around. Doesn't mean it's actually happening. Watch the game, folks. Pay attention. Look at the stats. Fitzpatrick's day minus the 50 yard pass to Evans...10-21 for 73 yards...really? That's a successful QB? Please.

I like the RB's, but the offensive line isn't creating holes and running room for Lynch or Jackson so to speak, all their yards are after contact and the grind it out variety. It is sad that with those two backs, Evans, T.O. and rookie Shawn Nelson at TE (the most athletic TE the Bills have had in my years of being a fan, I'm 24 just for an idea of how long I've been watching) the offense is so putrid. Really though, and I've said this for years, it all starts up front. A spectacular offensive line can make an average player look good and a good player look great.
The defense has been ravaged by injuries like seemingly every other year, and has been terrible against the run, but there bend but don't break approach thus far, and their ability to force turnovers really has me excited about them going forward. Jarrius Byrd was an absolute hit in the 2nd round this year and looks to be the ball hawking safety to pair with Dante Whitner. It's unfortunate Leodis McKelvin is on IR because I think he could be a number 1 CB for the Bills shifting McGee to the number 2. They need another LB to replace Ellison, and it would be nice to see an upgrade from Kyle Williams (who I like, but more as the 3 DT to rotate in for Stroud and someone else).
As far as QB's, this isn't the draft to get a franchise signal caller IMO. Tim Tebow will not be a good NFL QB, his windup delivery, and ugly duckling balls won't fly at the NFL level. Sam Bradford is a huge red flag due to his shoulder injuries and upcoming surgery, not to mention the fact he's played out of the Shotgun almost exclusively at OK. Jevon Snead has been very inconsistant (but is probably the guy I like the best in this class given his physical tools) and I'm not sold on Colt McCoy the NFL QB as being anything better then average ish. If Jake Locker were to enter the NFL draft this year he'd be the guy of interest to me, or if Ryan Mallett were to leave after only 1 year of starting at Arkansas he'd be the guy to get (he is a redshirt sophomore and after this season will be three years removed from HS making him draft eligible). Unfortunately the Bills may be looking for the future franchise signal caller a year or two early for the trully elite as I think both Locker and Mallett will return to school, and the other guy I like is only a true Freshman in Matt Barkley of USC.
Perhaps the Bills will bite the bullet and pass on a QB in this coming year's draft and sign a 1 year stop gap, or give Trent one more year at the helm and shore up some other positions (perhaps draft a top notch OL or LB). Final thought, I'm glad T.O. is a Bill, I wasn't when he signed, but he's behaved, and from what I've read worked with James Hardy. Hardy is a project, but his size and skills make him a potential WR1 down the line. If he develops, I think the signing of T.O. was worth it.

I'm not try to say Trent is good, either. I think they're both putrid. Let's just let the season play out. Hopefully Fitzpatrick or Edwards can do just enough to win a few games. But let's not start a QB controversy by thinking that one is better than the other. Let's face up to the fact that they're both terrible. Play out the season and draft a QB with some potential.
