Bills fans rent billboard to advertise discontent

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP)—It didn’t take long for Ryan Abshagen to discover how many Buffalo Bills fans are unhappy with their team and want owner Ralph Wilson to make sweeping changes.

In a little more than a week, Abshagen, an unemployed 18-year-old from New Freedom, Pa., raised enough money—$1,402 and counting as of Wednesday— through an Internet campaign to rent a billboard and advertise a message of discontent for everyone in Buffalo to see.

“I honestly never thought it would ever be this big,” Abshagen said. “Fans are disgruntled. It’s out there. It’s big. People are going to hear about it.”

Starting early Monday and running for a week, the message will be flashed up to 3,000 times a day on a digital billboard overlooking Interstate 190 on the south side of the city, said Abshagen after signing a contract with an advertising company.

The display will feature a message that reads, “It’s time to clean house, RALPH,” referring to Wilson. Next to that will be a checklist of three names: Jauron; the team’s chief college scout Tom Modrak; and vice president of pro personnel John Guy.

The level of fan frustration in Buffalo has been evident since the Bills missed the playoffs for a ninth straight season with their third consecutive 7-9 finish a year ago. It’s reached a boiling point again with Buffalo at 1-4 and coming off an ugly 6-3 loss to Cleveland on Sunday.

Bills fans showed their displeasure by booing the team numerous times during a game in which the team’s offense failed to score a touchdown for the second time in three weeks. Some fans were spotted wearing paper bags on their heads, while one group stood up to display matching white T-shirts with letters on them that spelled: “FIRE DICK NOW!”

Jauron, in his fourth season, is on the hot seat for the team’s dreadful start. Modrak and Guy are being blamed for failing to build a competitive roster.

The Bills declined comment when asked about the billboard.

Jauron has declined to discuss his status, but has previously acknowledged the criticism.

Bills punter Brian Moorman(notes) rallied to Jauron’s support when informed of the billboard.

“It doesn’t discourage me because I know there’s a lot more people out there that wouldn’t do something like that. But it is a free country,” Moorman said. “The important thing is that inside these walls, (Jauron) has our support. We believe in him.”

Abshagen said he first proposed the billboard idea on a Bills fan message board following the team’s 38-10 loss at Miami on Oct. 4.

A few days later, he designed a web site and began seeking donations. Abshagen said the site attracted little attention until several media outlets mentioned the campaign in stories, particularly after the loss to the Browns.

“That was the one that tilted the scales,” he said. “That was embarrassing.”

The response was so overwhelming that Abshagen said he raised the necessary $1,125 to rent the billboard for a week by Tuesday night. He’s now begun a second campaign to raise another $1,125 to extend the rental for one more week or rent a second billboard.

Any leftover money, he said, will be donated to charity.

“We don’t hate anybody,” Abshagen said, when asked about how the message might be interpreted. “The donors and myself included, we don’t mean any harm or wish to insult anyone. We simply just want to get our voice out as fans.”

And he doesn’t think it’ll make any difference among fans should the Bills win on Sunday when they travel to play the New York Jets.

“I think the fans are fed up enough that it won’t even have an effect,” Abshagen said. “We are in too deep at this point.”

Spend the money on a Billboard that asks people to BOYCOTT the home games. No fans in the stands means no money for the owner. This is more effective.

    hey FIZRAANIF....

buffalo loves this team. we have seen them 7-9 for 3 years now and are 1-4 this season. not to mention 0-2 in the division so far, 0-8 the past two years.

we are frustrated because we have the talent and still lose. that comes down to how the team is being run. ie- the head coach.

and arent all these injuries a sign of pore conditioning? who is supposed to get the players to be in NFL condition? whoever the head coach hired....

the sign doesnt mean we dont deserve the bills. it means we know football and know whose fault a losing season is. and it also shows our passion that we raised the money in a week to express our voice. which we have every right to do because our tickets, parking and concessions pay for this team.

Yeah the Raiders do suck as well, and all Raider fans need to step up and do the same thing this guy did. Whether it matters to any one else, who cares. We need a freaking revolution for this team. Not been to the playoffs since 2002, ridiculous. Al Davis sucks and I love the Raiders but hate the way they are playing. J Russel needs out. Put a patch over both eyes. Al Davis let the team go dude. Sorry I too just had to vent like the other Raider fan.

I understand why there's so much talk about moving the Bills to Canada...I assume they would join the CFL, where they only have to play 3 downs on defense. The Bills' D has been doing that for years-great on downs 1 and 2 (in CFL they would force the punt, eh?) but disastrous on 3rd downs, no matter the yardage needed by the opposition. I am a diehard Bills' fan since 1960, but this last run of futility is almost too much to take.

I agree with Bills fans there needs to be change. In Seattle with the Mariners we had Bill Bavasi who took our team down for years. Sold away good players and gave away even worse contracts. In Buffalo you have alot of the same no direction from the GM he is killing your team.

As a SPORTS fan not a hater of any team.

GMs are where the problems always start and end. The Bills O-line is broken the blocking is horrible. Edwards is a very good QB but for the system that hes trying to be force fed he cant with stand it. Garcia wouldnt be dumb enough to sign to play there and it has nothing to do with TO it has to do with the coaching and the talent on the team. When I watch the draft I see Buffalo drafting and I look whos drafting behind them and always think the same thing there gonna get the player Buf should be drafting!!!

Dick is a Def Cord hes not a head coach he sucked in Chicago as a head coach he was great as a D-Cord and will be a great D-Cord to any team but as a Head Coach he is horrible.

Change the coaching staff next year, find a replacement who has been in the game for awhile, bring back Turk who had his plays run during the New England game and we have seen Alex Can Pelt and his ineffective brand of coaching and finding an offensive system. Jauron needed the plays dumbed down because of his own ineffectiveness in Chicago and in Detriot and that says a good measure about how much of a failure he is as a head coach. For consistency hire Gruden and not Jauron the coaches coach is getting to be a pathethic excuse for allowing this to continue. If having a problem having line backers is an issue then have rotating players. Jauron is so thick that the replacement players such as Buggs were hired because of pure blindness and the injury count mounts because he completely ignored what was needed for having a rotating staff. Even Billick is on the market and he knew that right now Buffalo is facing down ownership issues from an owner who continually threatened to move the team the NFL should move in about now, allow Kelly to buy him out, and have Ralph sitting down and watching the games rather then in full control the only attitude problem and the only unproductiveness comes from the ownership.

@1908, if you tried that in Oakland, the players would fire back....
Plus, AL CROOK Davis needs to step down today. I am a Raider fan, however, i have seen better football at a popwarner game. Russel is a flop, his fata$$ needs to go on jenny craig, or something. Sorry don't mean to hijack your thread, but all RAIDER FANS NEED TO BOYCOTT HOME GAMES
DON"T EVEN GO!!!!! Russel = Car Sales Man, hoax, ask any raider player if he cares, they don't . THey are just collecting a paycheck.. Sorry, but i just had to vent....I hate to say this but i don't believe the raiders can climb back up. Raiders = No Expectations, No Heart. I have seen better signs of heart and expectations from the Special Olympics

Trent Edwards sucks yet Jeff Garcia is out there waiting to be signed. TO would welcome Garcia back with wide open arms.

Trent Edwards is pathetic. He's horrible. Terrel Owens on one side Evans on another and they have garbage catches!?!?!? That's one of the best tandems in the NFL it's ridiculous.
