Bills QB Edwards reclaims starting job

  • Print

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP)—The Bills are going back to quarterback Trent Edwards(notes), who will start against Tennessee this weekend after missing two games with a concussion.

Coach Dick Jauron said Wednesday that Edwards has “earned the right” to start after the offense continued to struggle under backup Ryan Fitzpatrick(notes). The Bills (3-5) opened the season 1-4 under Edwards, before he sustained his second concussion in a little over a year in a 16-13 overtime win at the New York Jets.

Fitzpatrick rallied the Bills to beat the Jets, and then went 1-1 in two starts. Buffalo’s offense has sputtered for the past six games, and ranks among the worst in the NFL.

Edwards has been cleared to play after three weeks of rest, including the team’s bye last week.

    LOL @ 66.

I think Edwards is better than Fitzpatrick, so I think there could be an upside. Man, I keep wishing this offense would perform to it's talent level.

#88, when did the Bills leave meltdown mode? It seems they always are. They seem to pull themselves out of total destruction just to get our hopes up.

Bills are in full melt down mode again. No playoffs in 1999, that is just sad even the Browns, Lions and Raiders have made the playoffs since then.

    This is a story?

He was having a pro-bowl year before he was injured right?

No one can save the Bills unless they are dismantled for the 2010 uncapped season and can spend some money.

To Q #75 the offensive line is decent and will continue to grow... the team had the same results with Jason Peters, Langston Walker and Derrick Dockery on the o-line in 2006-2008.. same results with JP Losman as the starting QB and the same results now with 3 different OC's in Jauron's 3 1/2 years in Buffalo... the coach is the real problem, the o-line looks bad due to the joke calls being called.. like i said the o-line is decent but Captain Checkdown, Lynch Dancing all the time, the OC being a first year OC coach and a head coach who career loser makes it look even worse... the team has talent, Evans, TO, Hardy (if he can develop) the TE's are coming a long, Freddie Jackson played very well when he was the starter over Lynch who IMo isn't running nowhere near the way he's capable and you can't blame the o-line since it's been a tread with Lynch since 2007... the o-line isn't the main problem.. it's the Head Coach, Owner, GM, OC who lacks due to the head coach having to much control and the lack of QB play at a high level, until the team gets a good head coach we'll just continue to complain of this and that.. the franchise needs an overhaul

But they got T.O.! This wuz suppose to be their break out year. Hey did I catch the Bills players watching the Pats game on the jumbletron? Even their not interested in playin for their team. Sounds like someone needs some new coaches. The last time they had a winning season is when the Buffalo was still on the nickel. Yeah they beat the Sescatchewan sea Dogs by a field goal. What you mean they didn't have field goals back then?

I have endured the up's and downs of the Bill's for 40 years. I can't run much anymore and I can't throw the ball. But I am going for the try-outs next year! I have alot of fans in Buffalo!

Rumors that Vick might end up in buffalo next season, bad news. Edwards is a solid QB Its hard to run or throw when you have a paper bag for an offensive line, Go Bills!

when the defense knows they can get at you before you can even make the first read the CBs press and are all over the receiver, leaving nothing to do except an occasional lucky play, doesnt this make sense to anyone? its football 101, build a run game, build a rep for making deep plays when it count and then comes the modest 10-15 yard outs. all of sudden things start clicking.... it all starts with the linemen, they have to find a way to keep the rushers out of the backfield. you think with the productionless talent at RB and the QB concussions that it isnt a problem? dont give tom brady sole credit for SB's and wins just like dont blame a single QB for an entire teams poor play.

@64 Brian - The O-line is decent? Your kidding or talking about another team. In a couple of years they'll likely be pretty decent. Right now they're a mess and the cause of our offensive problems. Unless you count not having a GM and having a lousy headcoach.

What did the Bills expect after bringing in the trash from Dallas? The cowboys are on their way now with the young receivers getting a chance and no locker room distractions. When you inject yourself with poison expect to die.

Amen #69. I think you're right on. I like the idea of Buffalo's QB (whoever it may be) of getting into a rhythm by throwing the short passes, and giving the receiver an opportunity to make a play. It's a start. But I also think that every once in a while you have to take your shots downfield as well, to keep the linebackers and the safeties honest. As it is, it looks to me that opposing safeties are only playing about 12 yards off the ball at best, because they know that Buffalo will not take their shots downfield. This does not help the running game out at all with defenses playing 12 yards and in on you. I do believe that you have to keep the defense honest and take your shots downfield and stretch the defense out, so they're not playing up on you, and wreaking all kinds of havoc by stacking the box, and blitzing from all angles on the field, on a young, inexperienced offensive line, that I do believe, in time, will come together. And do we even have a tight end on this team??? If you are going to be throwing a majority of passes short, it would be nice to get a good pass catching tight end into the mix.
