Palmer practices, thumb not a problem

  • Print

CINCINNATI (AP)—With a black glove supporting his left hand, quarterback Carson Palmer(notes) went through a full practice on Wednesday, an indication that his sprained thumb won’t be a problem this week.

Palmer hurt the thumb on his nonthrowing hand during the fourth quarter of a 17-14 win over Baltimore on Sunday. He had to hand off using his right hand only for the rest of the game, forcing him to change how he handled the ball.

Palmer said on Wednesday that the thumb was much better—it wasn’t taped when he met with reporters before practice—and shouldn’t affect him on Sunday against the Houston Texans.

The Bengals (4-1) have won three in a row because of last-minute drives led by Palmer, who has been a key reason behind their dramatic rise to first place in the AFC North. They can’t afford to have him hobbled.

“Not an issue at all,” Palmer said.

When a teammate lobbed a ball to him during warmups, Palmer fumbled it and dropped it, an indication that he’s still a bit limited. He worked through his limitations in Baltimore after he hit the ground with his left hand after getting hit, hurting the thumb.

For the rest of the game, he made all handoffs with his right hand, which could have created problems. Palmer showed his knack for improvisation: the exchanges with running back Cedric Benson(notes) went smoothly.

“I broke my collarbone in college one time and needed to do that for a couple of games,” Palmer said. “I’ve done it before and it’s one of those things you do on the fly.”

It’s not an issue when he gets ready to throw. Palmer led the Bengals on yet another game-winning drive in Baltimore, completing a 20-yard touchdown pass to Andre Caldwell(notes) with 20 seconds left. All five of the Bengals’ games have been decided in the closing minute.

Palmer has led the Bengals on winning drives in each of the last three. He’s been at his best under the most intense pressure, completing 66 percent of his throws for a passer rating of 112.8, which is extraordinary under the circumstances.

Palmer also has kept drives alive by scrambling on third- and fourth-down plays when defenses drop to take away his receivers. Although he’s never been much of a runner, Palmer has become more of a pocket passer since he got his left knee torn up during the Bengals’ playoff loss to Pittsburgh that ended their 2005 season.

The 29-year-old quarterback has been playing the way he did before the reconstructive surgery.

“I was told way back when I had the surgery that it was going to get better year after year,” he said. “I was going to feel 100 percent, but would realize I was 100 percent until the following year and the following year. Body-wise, I feel as good as I felt before I tore up my knee.”

Palmer didn’t miss a game in the 2006 season even though the knee was still mending. He wore a protective brace and didn’t move around much. By 2007, he was closer to normal physically, but the offensive line was crumbling. Last year, he missed all but four games because of a torn ligament and tendon in his passing elbow. Without Palmer, the Bengals won only four games.

They got a scare in the first preseason game, when Palmer suffered a moderate sprain in his upper left ankle. He missed the last three preseason games and didn’t move around very much during the first couple games in the regular season.

Now, he’s taking off on a scramble whenever the defense forgets about him.

“I think he’s finally getting over the ankle injury,” coach Marvin Lewis said. “It seems less and less bothersome to him that way.”

Even though he’s feeling better, Palmer would rather not run.

“I’m trying to find a guy open at the last second in those types of situations where the big plays are made,” Palmer said. “Coverages break down after three or four seconds. I’d much rather throw it and get the big-play potential in a throw.”

NOTES: The Bengals aren’t close to selling out Sunday’s game, which would end their streak of 46 consecutive sellouts at Paul Brown Stadium. The last game that failed to sell out also was against the Texans, on Nov. 9, 2003. … Long snapper Clark Harris(notes) looked up at the semicircle of 13 reporters and photographers and laughed. “You guys will never want to talk to me again,” he said. “That’s what I’m hoping for.” The Bengals released snapper Brad St. Louis(notes) on Tuesday and signed Harris. Bad snaps were a part of three botched field goals and two botched extra points in the first five games.

OK Bengals Fans...Some of you are right and others are way off. Carson is a great QB and has a supportive cast. The problem is the O line and the coaching staff. We also need a TE, I have been saying this for five plus years when is the last time you heard of one in C town. Marvin needs to get aggressive in the locker room and on the field. Push these guys and if they don't want it get rid of them. I'm tired of the criminal records, injury prone, and leeting good players go in the free agency...Sign your studs and get rid of the duds. We have been suffering for too long, I enjoyed our fresh breath until the fatal injury..Palmer will be back and this is his year to prove it or we start looking for a vet and draft a solid QB for the future. I feel bad when I wish we had Cutler..Marvin and Carson this is your year to prove to Bengal fans you belong here...As for upper management please they will suck until they're gone.........

The Bungling Bengals,, wow showed toughness playing through that sprained ankle Carson. Every year Palmer gives some diatribe bout how tough the Bengals are and how they can take the Ravens and the Steelers, then he gets hurt. You know, want to slam Palmer so bad but reading some of the comments on here and I have to respect what some of you said. Maybe thats the Bengals real problem,, they should listen to their fans.

I totally agree with KeithS. When Paul was still around he built everything up from the offensive line, anyone remember the line they had at the two superbowls. Yes the Bengals got beat in each, but they were the only real games of that decade and played SF twice and lost both times to the mastermind of Bill Walsh and in '88 we had no Stanley Wilson to crack alley and then Krumrie went down early with a very severe tibula and fibula breaks. But most of you want to blame the QB. How did Aikman and Elway look when they had no protection?? Build an organization by having a GM that actually knows football and not just business. Mike Brown knows how to build his own empire by robbing not only Cincinnati but also Hamilton county and the surrounding area of funds. Paul Brown built two teams that were legendary. Mike has built a bank account. Get a line that can block, receivers that will catch and run and keep their mouths shut and keep building the backfield.

Put the blame where it belongs. Right on the back of one Mike Brown. I am willing to pay for a DNA test on Mike to prove that he DID NOT come from the genes of Coach Paul Brown. Palmer is like Bradshaw, a Good QB but showed as a Great QB because he had a line to protect him and give him time to find a 2nd or 3rd receiver. Get the wad of $'s out of Mike's pocket, pay the boys and have a Championship Team.
Get off Carson's back and put the blame where it belongs - - - ON MIKE BROWN!!!!

some of you people are killing me i mean you dont even deserve to be watching football let alone talk about this subject. How soon we forget that palmer from 04-07 was talked about among the elite quarterbacks. You know brady, manning, brees, anyone herd of them.He has an elbow injury and a high ankle sprain and people want to write him off,i just dont get it.Cincy could have the rough problem cleveland has and have to decide on two terrible quarterbacks.

I'm concerned that it really might be an elbow injury, and the Bengals organization doesn't want to admit it to the public. Big Spike

All i'm gonna say is that if this were Pittsburg Ben would miss a chance to pratice with the first team against other NFL teams. Yes Palmer will be healthy for the opener, BUT he wont be sharp. He's not even practicing now. We will have to hear about how he's gonna need to knock the rust off in the first 2-3 games and we will be 0-3 to start. Nice hole M. Brown. Your a DumbA$$, not a businessman. Anyone can make a profit when your garanteed revenue. You should thank every ohter NFL team that brings people in; even Detroit. LAME. Go Bearcats!!!!

Palmer would not be vague about returning to the lineup if he played anywhere but that crap hole Cincinniti, or Cleveland. Anywhere else, he will be healed. Imagine a man with that talent stuck in a rathole, redneck, no class, no nightlife, no good looking women, city like Cincy.

I am so tired of hearing the pundits saying how great Palmer is. It isn't even a question of who he has ever beat but is becoming who has he ever played. And btw, the shot that took him out against the Steelers wasn't dirty, get over it.

Ben Roethlisberger (yeah so worthless he has won two Super Bowls) never missed a game thanks to the motorcycle accident. I love how you threw that in there. Palmer is a damn pansy, put a pink skirt on him.

How quick you clowns forget that the Bengals won the north a few years back when Palmer was healthy. They even went into Blitzbugh and whooped on them boys and used the terrible towel to clean their cleats after the game. Ever since that shot to the knee Palmer took from Blitzburgh in the first round as he completed a 70 yard pass to Henry they've been down. So show the man a little respect while you guys sit on your fat butts and blog about any and everything.

It's not like Palmer's getting injured shooting himself in the leg, or dogfighting, or riding motorcycles (Ben Worthlessberger) He's getting injured on the field. What can he do about it? A fraction of an inch here and there can be the difference between a broken leg or a small bruise.
