Bengals WR Henry has surgery on broken arm

  • Print

CINCINNATI (AP)—Bengals receiver Chris Henry will miss the rest of the season after having surgery Monday on his broken left forearm.

The Bengals put Henry on injured reserve and brought back offensive guard Scott Kooistra(notes), who was released a week ago. The Bengals needed another offensive lineman after left guard Evan Mathis(notes) injured his an ankle Sunday during a 17-7 win over Baltimore.

Henry is in the final year of his contract with the Bengals, who let him go after his fifth arrest following the 2007 season. Owner Mike Brown(notes) changed his mind and brought him back a few months later, signing him to a two-year deal.

Henry has stayed out of trouble since his return and has been used primarily on passing downs. He was fourth among Bengals receivers this season with 12 catches for 236 yards and two touchdowns.

He was hurt on his only catch Sunday, landing on his back while cornerback Fabian Washington(notes) made the tackle and came down on his arm. Henry said after the game that he could tell the arm was broken when he looked at it.

Henry has been bothered by a thigh injury that improved during the bye week leading up to the Baltimore game.

“He was excited to play yesterday,” coach Marvin Lewis said. “I don’t know that I’ve ever seen him that excited to play, and it’s unfortunate he got hurt. You could tell he felt good after the time off and getting his legs back and under him.”

The victory kept Cincinnati (6-2) in first place in the AFC North, headed for a showdown next Sunday in Pittsburgh against the defending champions. The Bengals could replace Henry by elevating receiver Maurice Purify(notes) from the practice squad, which would involve another roster move.

Purify, signed last year as an undrafted free agent from Nebraska, spent most of last season on the practice squad. He has played well on special teams, which gives him an advantage.

Jerome Simpson(notes), a second-round draft pick last year, has been inactive for all eight games this season, still struggling to make the jump from Coastal Carolina to the NFL. Simpson played in only six games last season and caught one pass for two yards.

“We could move Maurice up,” Lewis said. “We’ll look at the best options because with that, it’s a matter of who can I get the most snaps out of on Sunday. That’s the important part.”

Mathis hurt his left ankle during the first quarter on Sunday. Linebacker Keith Rivers(notes) hurt his right calf and was on crutches after the game. Lewis said on Monday that neither injury appears to be severe.

    @ Black & Gold...

You have to remember that the Steelers are the reigning SuperBowl champs, so a lot of trash talk will be directed their way. The furst game the Steelers were all talking about this was not the Cincy team of prior years. Actually, it was the Steelers that were a tad unsure. losing Troy was a big liability, and the new guys were learning.

This time, it will just be Troy, James, and Ward saying welcome to our house ~~ what are you doing sitting on the field.

    @ Jackie...

Randall could be saying with his eyes that he wants to live next door to you so that you can educate him.

with 5 arrests he should not have had the chance to get hurt on the feild. He should have been out of the league not get rewarded with a new contract.being in the nfl or any other paid sport is a privlidge not a right,He should be getting a real job not rewarded. No it does not matter if he has been a good boy for two whole years or has just not been caught again yet. Way to show the young people that crime does pay!

You had 282 yards of total offense. Incase you do not remember, you got lucky! You were dominated and lucked out on a bad choice by Ben. You will have your a$$e$ handed to you again on Sunday.

    JPenis,
I have 3 authentic jerseys and none of them are Kordell. I have #92 Harrison, #7 Roethlisberger, and #34 Mendenhall. I realize that you can't afford that or that they do not even stock that many bungles players. So put away your 1982 Cris Collinsworth jersey and come pick you mama up. I am done with her, I will tell her to look for your 93 Cavalier in the drive way. By the way, self proclaimed intelligent one- "To talk about smacking someone's mom around. High school bandwagon punk. " are not complete sentences. My two Master's degrees and six figure salary let me know that. Don't you hate the truth? As far as targets go, retarded people like you with little intelligencia and no great knack for humor are easy targets, being a bungles fan just makes it better. Would you like me to keep hurting your feelings or are you done yet?

Bengals win in a blow out and exploit the secondary with lots of play action and bootlegs. Don't forget the boys in orange and black have a bit of a running game and even with Henry lost for the season, they do have a fluid passing game. I respect the reigning Super Bowl Champs, and they are rolling, but you don't win the war until the last battle is over.

Black&Gold Somalian. How is your iron city hangover????????Remember this, because Monday morning you will feel worse!!!!!!You are an easy target!!!! Your talk is cheap. To talk about smacking someone's mom around. High school bandwagon punk. It shows through your lack of verbal and or writing skills. The only thing getting smacked around is the steelers and your 16 yr old ego. There is not one thing that you can say that brings fear or any other emotion. If you didn't have your false bandwagon bravado, you'd be the typical drunken jerk that you act like. So, when you put on that old worn out Kordell Stewart shirt that you got from Goodwill, on Sunday, remember the derilict they got it from was a steelers fan as well!!!! Who-Dey...Not-Dem..............Roar on Bengals........Roar on!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What is Bungobrownulosis? It is a Virus which was found in the stuff left under the Dawg pound and now its spread to the major sports teams in Ohio. Hey Gov, Don't you think you better call the CDC....and we don't want the people that work at the Hall of Fame in Canton to get sick because thats the best thing that Ohio has in football....

wow, malcolm can spell. it seems steeler fans have a huge fan base. my only question is why do they spend so much time commenting on how great their team is... kinda seems like napolean syndrome. maybe compensating for something. like what they lack in intelligence, a job, in their pants, i dont know. i was listening to ken broo's radio show after the bengals game and some guy named rufus called in, and between incoherent babble he got out bengal fans are drinking the kool-aid. i dont know but unless the steelers sign kimo to take out carson, i like our chances in pittsburgh this weekend, and again in the playoffs when, we play them at home(because lets face it with our remaining schedule the worst we can do is 10-6). id also like to remind you steeler fans that when you come to cincy we dont harrass you at our stores or diners, so if you could find it in your neaderthal brains to offer the same courtesy. also i'd like to remind you that roethlisberger, holmes, and harrison all came from ohio schools. so b&g italian, you might wanna take that into consideration when you call ohio the butthole of sports... also when the bearcats beat pitt, just remember there's a reason your "top recruits" leave pennsylvania for ohio.

"if i ever said i wanted to live in pittsburgh, please punch me. because i would be lying"

You're just pissed because the Bengals beat the Steelers in Cincy, which you essentially called a Pittsburgh home game. I can't wait for this Sunday when the Bengals roll into Pitt for a real Steelers home game and break Hines Ward's jaw. Little @#$% hitting people helmet-to-helmet when their backs are turned. Bengals 1st place AFC North!!!!!! WHO-DEY!!!!!!!!

Wow Black and old! I didn't know there was something as great and magnificent as you! You know everything but the use of the English language and how to write. Blockbuster really got ahold of a top notch employee. Remember, movies that start with "A" go in the beginning. Take note because you'll be renting them (with your employee discount) come playoff time. Maybe you can get one with a girl in it.It'll be helpful while you smack yourself around. Just let Sunday do the talking!! Who-Dey.......Not you!!! We will see!! Have a nice evening Buddy :)....Who-Dey
