Bears feel need to improve despite routing Browns

  • Print

LAKE FOREST, Ill. (AP)—Jay Cutler(notes) was on the run and bleeding for much of the game, yet he insisted afterward he was fine. No reason to worry.

Even so, the Chicago Bears did little to calm their anxious fans in a 30-6 win over the Cleveland Browns on Sunday. Lopsided score aside, it was far from a perfect performance by a team that had dropped two straight and was coming off a 45-10 beating at Cincinnati that ranked among its worst in years.

But the Bears weren’t about to be picky. Not after what happened the previous week.

Linebacker Hunter Hillenmeyer(notes) was quick to acknowledge Monday that the Bears’ confidence was “definitely” shaken after that blowout by the Bengals.

“Even though Cleveland’s struggling on offense, it felt good to go out there and execute defensively,” Hillenmeyer said. “I’m sure when we watch the tape, we’ll realize that we didn’t play perfect football, but especially with some of the teams we’ve got coming up in the next month, we need something to build on. This is definitely a good start.”

Defensive end Alex Brown(notes) insisted the team’s confidence never wavered.

“We don’t lose confidence whether it’s one play or one game,” he said. “If we had a stretch of playing like we did earlier in my career where we’d lose eight or nine games in a row, then I guess your confidence can be shaken, but not from one game. So it’s just like your confidence isn’t built overnight, either. So you don’t just regain your confidence after one game, either.”

What they did get was a much-needed win, no matter how ugly it was, and a big lift from a defense that got run over by Cedric Benson(notes) and the Bengals.

They picked off Derek Anderson(notes) twice and recovered three fumbles while allowing a season-low 191 yards against the Browns after giving up 448 the previous week. Whether that was the result of a juggled lineup or Cleveland’s ineptitude is open for debate.

Either way, the Bears (4-3) will take it.

Beside having Tommie Harris(notes) back from his one-week benching, the Bears went with Marcus Harrison(notes) over Anthony Adams(notes) at nose tackle and moved Hillenmeyer from strongside linebacker back to the middle in a flip-flop with Nick Roach(notes).

“I don’t want to make too much of that,” Hillenmeyer said. “We were both still on the field. I haven’t seen the film yet, but it seemed like Nick had a great game. I think it’s always the coaches’ idea to keep the players out there that they think can help them win. Nick is definitely one of those guys.”

Three of the next four games are against division leaders, starting with Arizona this week and finishing with Minnesota at the end of the month. That means the Bears’ margin for error figures to be slim, and if the Cleveland game showed anything, it’s that there’s plenty of work to do.

Cutler again was running for his life behind a struggling line and got sacked a season-high four times while absorbing several big hits, including one in the second quarter that left him with a bloody mouth. He said afterward he felt fine and added: “I’ll be ready to go.”

On Monday, coach Lovie Smith said, “Each game, you have 22 guys that get roughed up.”

Yet only one of them is carrying the franchise’s long-term hopes on his cannon-like arm.

“Jay’s a tough player,” Smith said. “Some games, it’ll be that way. That’s why you need big, strong, tough guys playing quarterback for you to be able to handle those things. Again, that’s not ideal an ideal world for us to be in.”

Nor is this: An offense scoring touchdowns on just 2 of 7 trips inside the 20, bringing its red-zone conversion rate to 44.4 percent this season. Although Smith acknowledged a need to improve, that grim number didn’t stop the coach from painting a brighter picture.

“I’m pleased with us continuing to get down in the red zone,” he said. “Whether it be us protecting the football or just making a play from time to time, it’ll come as long as we just continue to maintain what we’re doing and continue to get down there.”

Leave it to a fellow Marine to tell it like it is! Semper Fi and a Happy 234th Birthday joecold2002. Dont need no bandwagon Bear fans post #2 and #3. The only true Bear fans are passionate, loyal and standing behind the team thru thick n thin! Born and bred in Cali but I have been a Bear fan since I turned 12 back in 75 and I am just as frustrated as the rest with the Offensive line and coach Turner! The O needs to step it up bigtime. There hasn't been one game in the enitre year where the Bears have controlled the pace of the game. The O controls the game and the D when rested will do the rest! 3 and outs suck Coach Turner and you either need to pull out all of your playbook or step aside. I think whats frustrating is the team, even with all the injuries is close but that so called "window" of opportunity is slowly closing. Brian, Wally and the rest are not getting any younger before the D needs replacing! There has got to be a couple diamond in the rough lineman out there right? This team is too talented for another 7-9 or 8-8 season. 10 or 11 wins are easily do able and than the playoffs are another season. Lets beat AZ and Frisco in the next week and prep for Phily and Minn at the end of the month. Go Bears!!!!!!

I agree with 95 percent of the posts on here.I don't blame Cutler for any of the Bears B.s on offense. Some ignorant people are gonna assume that since we give up alot to get the guy, he is gonna take us to the promise land. Like I've said before, he is one of the big pieces of the puzzle, the problem is that the Bears management address only one piece and forgot about the rest of the team. The offense line is one of the worst I've seen from the Bears in a long time. I don't get it, we have max protection for quarterbacks like Orton who dink and dunk but now that we have a gunslinger, the guy has zero time to throw the ball. Folks, these are teams that are not good at rushing the passer as well. I really shudder to think about that trip to Baltimore, poor Jay is gonna get his ass kicked. Give this guy some time and he is lights out, plain and simple. Give Forte some holes to run and we can open up a more effective passing game. AS for th defense, yeah, there are issues there as well. Sorry, we cant sack Derrick Anderson once, thats pathetic- this cover 2 scheme is old and tired and needs to go, we don't have the L.B that are needed to run this and we are gonna keep getting torched for it.

I'll say it again--it sure is easy to beat up on Cutler and Forte and their "lackluster" performances, but when you are too busy getting knocked on your @$$ to do anything, it's much ado about nothing. Fix the lines and the atrocious play calling, and do it fast. I liked Cutler's play call in the broken headset game in Seattle far better than anything Turner's done all season so far.

The bears will work on the o-line in the off season. Hopfully there will be some young talent to hit the FA. Other then that our team looks good, when cutler has time to throw he's as sharp as a razorblade. Our D is looking above avg with a bunch of back ups playing. Hofully in the offseason the bears can find a sucker 2 trade tommie( do what ever I want) harris for a 1st and a 3rd.

Post 9 James..........Good comments.........Joecold2002 only 40 years eh? good comments with feeling there.......I think this Bears team has good potential and finally a QB............offensive line is in dire need and very evident in the Atlanta game...geeze....sometimes the play calling reminded me of those just awful 1960's Halas "play it safe" play calling even when behind in score..........I seem to remember that line plunge was a common call on 3rd and longs..........I agree we are looking at 9-7 or 8-8...could have been better if the defense was healthier and.........the loss of Urlacher, though up there in years, has exposed lack of D depth on this Bears team..........I am also still pissed about that Packer game...coaching lapse caused that..........the Bears D allowed the Pack to resort to sandlot long bomb desperation play calling and be SUCCESSFUL.......yep 9-7 or 8-8 this season....

How a super bowl appearance a few years ago can determine today's ability is beyond me. Lovie Smith was the coach then too.

I don't know what to make of this team, beyond the fact that it is inconsistent...and the Oline and Turner stink. Gave the packer game away, gave the falcon game away, didn't even show up to the cincy game. Beat the Steelers, did what they were supposed to do against Detroit, ok against Seattle, unimpressive against the absolutely horrid browns, an organization ready to implode. This looks like a 8-8, 9-7 team right now, and that will have us sitting home for the playoffs. If they can manage a split with Minn and GB, maybe there's a wildcard shot...but that's a tall order right now.

O-line is terrible. Definitely needs to be upgraded next season..Cutler is basically in the same situation that he was facing last season in Denver where he basically had no run game & had to attempt 40-50 passes every game for his team to have a shot at winning each week.

I am a Bear fan and it's clear that Andrew Seligman doesn't cover the Bears or he wouldn't be calling us anxious fans.

What we are is tired of mediocre teams in a top tier market, we tired of clumsy looking performances game after game even after we traded our future for a supposed franchise QB who just so happens to have as many TDs as INTs and just got a 2 yr extension.

The Bears looked just as bad as the Browns. We can't run against the worst run defense means that we can't run at all. Our O-line is only an O-line in name. They are fat, old, and talentless. Cutler will get hurt sooner or later and it'll be the end of the seaon. The defense can't sack Derek Anderson?

This team sucks and will continue to suck as long as Lovie and Ron Turner are running the team. The owners need to stop being cheap and give us the team we deserve, and since they won't I will never buy a ticket to any games let alone a jersy or cap or bumper sticker.

I'm a Bears fan who has to root for the Patriots or Colts to see what a real franchise with real owners looks like.
