Bears LB Urlacher out for season

  • Print

LAKE FOREST, Ill. (AP)—Finally healthy after two years, Bears linebacker Brian Urlacher(notes) launched his regular season by making a run at Aaron Rodgers(notes), lowering his shoulder and plowing over the Packers quarterback in the first quarter.

His 10th season was off to a good start. And then, it was over.

Chicago’s star linebacker went on injured reserve after having surgery Monday to repair a dislocated right wrist and will not be back this season, a major blow for a team with high expectations.

There was no immediate word from Urlacher other than a text message to the Chicago Tribune that said simply: “season is over.” But coach Lovie Smith said Urlacher clearly was disappointed.

“He had put himself in position to have an outstanding year,” Smith said. “He was playing well in the game before he went down with the injury. Even after the injury to his hand, the competitor in him wanted to continue to play. It’s a tough break. There’s no way around it, but he’s been injured before and he’s come back before.”

With Urlacher out, Hunter Hillenmeyer(notes) is expected to start at middle linebacker this week when the Bears host defending champion Pittsburgh. Chicago also signed linebacker Tim Shaw(notes), who got cut by Jacksonville this month, to a one-year deal on Monday.

The injury to Urlacher occurred in the first quarter of Sunday night’s 21-15 loss at Green Bay, though it was not clear when. Urlacher briefly shook his wrist after tackling Packers running back Ryan Grant(notes) late in the period, though Smith said he wasn’t sure when it happened.

Urlacher played in the second quarter, but left on the Packers’ first drive of the second half.

“Talk about a guy that’s a great leader,” said Hillenmeyer, who replaced Urlacher on Sunday. “First, he plays an entire half of football with a dislocated wrist. I don’t think there’s many people who can do something like that.”

The arrival of Pro Bowl quarterback Jay Cutler(notes) sent expectations in Chicago soaring in the offseason, though he threw four interceptions and looked average at best in the loss.

Now the Bears are without the longtime face of the franchise and a stalwart defender in a division with top-tier running backs in Grant and Vikings star Adrian Peterson along with elite quarterbacks such as Rodgers and Minnesota’s Brett Favre(notes).

The 31-year-old Urlacher, a six-time Pro Bowler, appeared to be in better shape after being limited by a bad back and neck the past two years.

He looked like his old self midway through the first quarter when he flattened Rodgers just as the quarterback released a pass downfield that a leaping Donald Driver(notes) juggled and dropped. Later, with about four minutes left in the quarter, Urlacher took down Grant for one of his three tackles and Packers guard Josh Sitton(notes) landed on him.

Urlacher got up and briefly shook his wrist before walking away with what looked like nothing more than a minor injury.

“No one knew the severity of it,” linebacker Lance Briggs(notes) said. “We knew that it had to be checked out. Now we know.”

Smith dismissed the idea of moving Briggs to the middle, meaning the job is Hillenmeyer’s for now. He also did not rule out bringing in help from the outside, which they did with Shaw, a third-year pro out of Penn State.

Veterans like former NFL Defensive Player of the Year Derrick Brooks(notes) and Zach Thomas(notes), who was cut by Kansas City this month, are still out there, too. The 36-year-old Brooks, who was cut by Tampa Bay in February, has a good relationship with Smith dating to his days on the Buccaneers’ staff.

“Derrick’s been a great player for a long time in the league,” Smith said before the Bears announced they signed Shaw.

Chicago could also be short-handed in other areas, too, with Pittsburgh coming to town on Sunday.

Tight end Desmond Clark(notes) took a hard hit after making a catch in the third quarter and left the game with a rib injury. He had little to say Monday, other than this: “Report that to the fans—I’m OK. Just got a little shot to the back; I’m all right.”

Smith simply said Clark has a rib injury that will be evaluated. Left guard Frank Omiyale(notes) also went down for several minutes moments after spraining his ankle and limping off the field.

Linebacker Pisa Tinoisamoa(notes) and cornerback Trumaine McBride(notes) also suffered sprained knees, but the biggest hit for a defense looking to regain its dominant form after two mediocre seasons was losing Urlacher.

“It’s disheartening, but we’ve still got a job to do,” defensive tackle Anthony Adams(notes) said.

You could cast a broken wrist but not a dislocated wrist. If you were to cast a wrist with a lunate dislocation without fixing it several horrible things could happen. If the lunate is dislocated the ligament is more than likely torn and will have to be re-attached immediately or it will deteriorate. Secondly there is probably a loss of blood flow to the bones in his wrist that can also cause those bones to die. Thirdly there is probably nerve damage since there are two main nerves running directly next to your lunate. I speak from experience. Brian get this repaired now or you will regret it forever. I know the injury doesnt sound bad guys but it is horrible. Hands are used a lot in everyday life.

Damn. The Bears really could have used him healthy this year. Well the question now, is who is going to step up and make the plays? After Urlacher went out it was clear that the defense was not even close to the same. The second to third level area was wide open for those crossing routes. The Bears have to get that issue fixed with either someone stepping up and minor changes in coverage, or some big changes in scheme.

Brooks is just a big name. He has his chances and teams said, thank you but no. He is too old and has lost a step..add into the fact that he isn't a MLB..lacking both size and the speed required. The Bears can manage with Hillenmeyer/Williams.

Herb you must have a stump for a brain--Urlacher is certainly NOT one of the best to ever put on a Bears jersey. It's emo fanboys like you and the media who blow so much sunshine up his arse--Urlacher can't tackle and overruns about every other play, he's all hype. When was the last time Urlacher led the team in tackles? When was the last time he forced a fumble? Recovered a fumble? I couldn't care less about fantasy football and I'm not playing this year but all that's irrelevant--the fact of the matter is Urlacher is overrated and best LB on the Bears roster is Lance Briggs--if JA has any brains he'll give Derrick Brooks close to what he wants to come to Chi-Town and if that happens we'll see how much the Bears miss Urlacher

Agreed piper although instead of signing Tim Shaw I would have put a call into Derrick Brooks agent--sure Brooks comes at a much higher price but he's familiar with the D and you could put him on either side. Also, you would have 2 fast backers covering the area Hillenmeyer can't. Urlacher has been the most overrated player in the NFL for a few years now and his injury forces the Bears to stop relying on someone who can't tackle and overruns every other play...and they may just come out of this for the better...although...they don't have a snowball's chance in hell of beating Pittsburgh

Oh yeah and another thing. Do you think Dick Butkus would of come out of the game never mind be out the whole season because he dislocated his wrist? I don't think so he would of wrapped it up and then had a cast put on it and played the entire year with it. Boy now that was a linebacker. Not like that overrated pretty boy Urlacher.

Da Bears will be fine. Brian Urlacher is the most OVERRATED player in NFL history other than Bret Farve. This could be a blessing in disguise for Da Bears. They can now play better team defense without him.
