Bears, Cutler agree on extension
CHICAGO (AP)—The Chicago Bears and quarterback Jay Cutler(notes) have agreed on a two-year contract extension that runs through the 2013 season.
A person familiar with the negotiations said the deal includes approximately $20 million guaranteed and roughly $30 million in new money. The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because the terms were not released.
“Thanks to the Bears, the McCaskey family and all the Bears fans for the support,” Cutler wrote Tuesday night on his Twitter page.
Acquired in a blockbuster trade from Denver in the offseason, the Pro Bowl quarterback has completed 110 of 172 passes with 1,201 yards, 10 touchdowns and seven interceptions while leading Chicago to a 3-2 record. With a 64.0 completion rate and 240.2 yards passing per game, he is on pace to set club single-season records.
Considered to be one of the Bears’ best quarterbacks since Sid Luckman, Cutler got picked off four times in the season-opening loss at Green Bay but has since lived up to his billing. He led the Bears to back-to-back comeback wins over Pittsburgh and Seattle the next two weeks while completing more than 70 percent of his passes and has nine touchdowns with three interceptions over the past four games.
Drafted 11th overall by Denver in 2006, Cutler has thrown for 10,225 yards, 64 touchdowns and 44 interceptions while completing 872 of 1,392 passes.
He made his first Pro Bowl last season while setting a Broncos record with 4,526 yards, but a falling out with new coach Josh McDaniels ultimately led to the trade to Chicago. In return, the Broncos got quarterback Kyle Orton(notes) along with two first-round draft picks and a third-rounder.
Cutler’s relationship with the Broncos started to sour when they fired Mike Shanahan, and he wasn’t happy when his position coach, Jeremy Bates, left for Southern California.
Just when things were starting to smooth out, Cutler found out in late February that the Broncos were trying to trade him to Tampa Bay in a three-way deal that would have sent Matt Cassel(notes) from New England to Denver.
Cutler and his agent didn’t think McDaniels was up front with them about the trade talks and asked to be dealt; McDaniels, however, insisted he informed Cutler the morning of those discussions.
Either way, the ill will escalated.
Cutler stopped returning calls from the Broncos and they eventually dealt him in April.
In Chicago, there have been some rough moments despite the warm welcome from the fan base.
When he reported to training camp, Cutler and linebacker Brian Urlacher(notes) found themselves denying reports of a rift. Devin Hester(notes) was also offended by comments Cutler made after the first preseason game, when the receiver failed to break up an interception against Buffalo.
Otherwise, teammates and coaches have staunchly defended Cutler.

Kyle Orton was a solid QB last year with bears, but I would take Cutler over him any day. Cutler is one those guys who can make plays that very few others in the league can do. He makes the players around him better. They would not have beaten the Steelers or the Seahawks without him.

Post 171 is right about both teams benefitting from this.
I think it is too bad that so many Bears fans are dogging Kyle Orton though. He did fantastic as a bear qb and is currently 27-12 for his career. He is more than a game manager he is a winner. And he would have had the Bears winning too. There is way more to Orton and I am glad he is finally starting to get some respect in the league.
However, as a Bears fan, i have never had the pleasure of watching a quarterback like we have now. His skill set is amazing, and I can not wait for the relationship with the receivers to get more in synch as the year goes on, and as the next 5 years go along. He will be fun to build around on offense.
Both teams benefited from this, and it will come down to the extra picks to see finally who got the better end of the deal. Right now Cutler and Knox are looking pretty solid and both came directly from the trade. Orton and Cutler are both 2 very different quarterbacks, but they are both have certain skills that set them apart from the rest. Neither will be a backup for years to come, or possibly ever again.
Ok continue the idiotic posts about how terrible they both are and how they both will be backups, and that your daughter can out throw them etc...etc... Please keep wasting everyones time.

Cutler has never had 20 INT's in a season. Nice try though.
Because 18 INT's is a lot better?
2007 = 14 picks
2008 = 18 picks
2009 = 7 picks, and the season is still young!
Guess you can't blame him, he is drunk half the time...

I honestly wouldn't want Cutler or Orton. Both quarterbacks will be back ups within the next couple seasons. Mark my word……
Cutler has already made a pro bowl and you are saying he's a backup at best? Despite playing awful against the packers and playing so-so against the Falcons, Cutler is the by far the best QB I have seen in Chicago in my life. The way he moves around in the pocket, accurate (for the most part), can run when he needs too, and can lead a team from behind (led them from behind in every game this year). He won't be a backup any time soon (or probably at all). His passer rating has been close to 90% every year. That's pretty good.

Why isn't Marshall a traitor? He wanted out of town b/c of money, or did you just forget about that?

All the people whining about his extension etc. Why would the Bears give up Orton, and 2 first round picks and NOT extend his contract? Seems like a waste. The Bears made a commitment that he will be the franchise quarterback and are following what they promised. I do not see many Bears fans upset with this, only Denver fans which lead me to believe no matter how happy they say they are, they still can't get over it and are probably mad their Broncos Cutler jersey is unusable now.
Heck if nothing else the Bears received Knox in the trade deal also so that is a bonus. The Broncos will get behind in a game and learn Orton, while a great guy is only a game manager, not changer. Wait until he has to throw the ball and you will see the true Orton, a guy who cannot complete a pass beyond 15 yards.

Where Denver got the edge is in the future draft considerations. That may or may not make a difference, but with McDaniels as the judge of character, there is a good chance that those draft picks, or further manuevering with the picks, could help the Broncos more over the next few years, hence my edge to the Broncos.

Orton looks good now because he has a great team around him. Once the talent around him dwindles even a little, Orton won't look so good then.
Cutler has great potential, but too high maintenance.
Orton is simply just an average quarterback playing on a very talented team.

The Bears are 3-2, that's not exactly a losing season. And the two teams they lost too (on the road) are pretty good teams.
Enjoy your 6-0 start. Half your wins came against awful football teams, and the jury is still out on the Bengals (nice win on a luck play btw). The AFC West is awful, so awful that I shouldn't have even used caps when typing out the name of the division.
We'll see how you do in Baltimore against the Ravens and then at home against Pittsburgh.

Blah Blah....thats all i hear. Just because Denver is 6-0 doesn't mean its all due to the out standing performance of Orton. Alot of it has to do with their defense that has help them win. All i know we will see who makes it to the play-offs. GO BEARS!!!!!!
As a Bears fan I will tell you right now that the Broncos have a much much MUCH better chance at making the playoffs than the Bears. (we don't have the luxury of having of getting to play the Chiefs and Raiders twice). Not to mention the 6-0 start, and us having to catch up with the 6-0 Vikings. The Bears could win 10 or 11 games this year and not make the playoffs. All the Broncos have to do is go 9-7 and they'll probably make it. Hell, 8-8 could win the AFC West (next best team is 2-3 at the moment). So all they would have to do is go 2-8 the rest of the season and they'd probably STILL get in.
I'm a Bears fan, but shut the f*ck up!!! You make the rest of us look retarded, and I would hate being lumped into the same category as you.

However as far as people saying this is a poor decision and they should have waited to extend contract... Why?
He has already proven he can make it to the pro bowl, he is already set to break several (to say the least for the bears) team quarterback records, and he as already proven he can stay cool when the game is on the line. Like #155 said, he has brought them back every game, losing on 2.
Wait until he makes the playoffs or the superbowl? Why, so that $30 Million becomes $60 million?
Sign him early when you already know what he is capable of before he can make legitimate arguments for it to be a LOT more money.
