49ers sign cornerback Smith to help secondary

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP)—The San Francisco 49ers have signed cornerback Keith Smith(notes) to a one-year contract, boosting their secondary a day after learning Nate Clements(notes) would be sidelined up to eight weeks with a broken shoulder blade.

San Francisco (3-4) also released receiver Micheal Spurlock(notes) and cut tight end Carson Butler(notes) from the practice squad.

Smith was released by Detroit before the season. The Lions selected him in the third round of the 2004 draft. Smith has played in 71 career games with five starts and 118 tackles, four interceptions, a sack, a forced fumble and one touchdown.

it would be great if the niners could get an offensive coordinator schooled in the old way that walsh set up the offense. the defense looks like it"s close to the 1994 group. all they need is for the "O" to catch up.

It's time for the Offense to open up and let Smith pass and pass a lot to set up the run and watch Gore tear it up. I recall the ol days when YOung would spead t he ball around and that opened up the running game. It's soo easy - we have the talent - just pull the trigger!!
    GO 9ers!

It wasn't Jimmy William's character or his weight, it was reported as his failing a drug test (by the league, not SF). and being suspended. That is not what you want in a player.

I'm glad to see the 49ers going back to basics. NFL training camps are nothing like they use to be. I like the guys in full pads, getting after it. Put some competition back in training camp and get the most out of your guys. If they get hurt, they get hurt. Jimmy Williams didn't fit into what our defense is trying to do. We have two pretty good corners in Clements and Bly. Spencer is looking to make a strong come back after being hurt most of last season. Mr. Tarell Brown put in some quailty minutes for us as well. I think the 49ers will make the playoffs by winning the division with some old school hard nose play.

I can't believe the 49ers waived Jimmy Williams. Jimmy is one of the hardest hitting DB's in the league. I wish all you gossip hounds would get off the attitude stuff. There is nothing to question about Jimmy's Character. Jimmy is a stand up young man, who is very discipline and loves the game of football. In addition, He could have attended VATech on an his academics alone. The problem is teams don't know where to play him. HE IS NOT A CORNER. He is 6'3 212 pounds. Put him at safety and wolla you have a replica RONNIE LOTT. Hey, but what can I say, we are talking about the 49ers. Considering the talent that they put on the field in last few years, they would not know GOOD if it smacked them upside the head. I hope someone like the RAMS or CARDS pick him up so he can make SF regret that stupid decision. Better yet, I hope we(World Champion Steelers) can pick him up.

Thats crazy this guy use to be an animal in his college days but thats the results you get from a lot of these@#$%y athletes that feel they cant be told anything and then they turn out to be a waste in life because off of all the film study and everything doesnt turn out to be much of anything . Idk its something about virginia Tech corners and atlanta they always turn out to be some @#$%s De'Angelo Hall sounds familiar his stay in atlanta wasnt that great either and his cover skills was always questionable he was just very fast and hard to get away from.

why even bother to sign williams and get his hopes up? evidently hes not all that and more than likely he needs an attitude adjustment.

Jimmy Williams was supposed to be a steal as a second round pick by the ATL.
He didn't pan out and his character was always called into question.
