49ers adjusting to better use aerial weapons

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP)—Circumstances and personnel are leading the struggling San Francisco 49ers to change their offensive approach.

Proclaiming to be a power-rushing team from the start this season, the 49ers could be going airborne more often now that quarterback Alex Smith and rookie wide receiver Michael Crabtree(notes) have joined the huddle.

Smith sparked a second-half comeback with three touchdown passes and Crabtree made an impressive NFL debut with five receptions last week during a 24-21 loss to the Houston Texans that dropped the 49ers to 3-3 and out of first place in the NFC West for the first time this season.

Offensive coordinator Jimmy Raye said Thursday that the 49ers won’t change their philosophy despite a two-game losing streak and an offense that ranks 29th in the NFL. But the team will adjust its attack and game plan to better take advantage of its passing weapons.

“We’re not going to be stubborn and try to jam a square peg into a round hole,” Raye said. “What we are striving to do all along is to create balance. I think (more passing) is an apt description of where we would like to go with the changes that we’ve made.”

Smith entered last week’s game at halftime in place of Shaun Hill(notes), who led the 49ers to a 3-1 start but produced just 10 points in his next six quarters of action before the 49ers turned to their second option.

Playing for the first time in almost two years, Smith completed 15 of 22 passes for 206 yards to rally San Francisco from a 21-0 halftime deficit. The former No. 1 overall draft pick connected with tight end Vernon Davis(notes) on touchdown passes of 29, 14 and 23 yards.

Smith adds a new dimension to the offense, giving the 49ers an ability to go downfield with their passing game that wasn’t there with Hill at the controls.

“If I can bring anything extra to the table, and I guess I might, then all the better,” Smith said. “We have to be able to throw the ball, but in the end you have to be balanced and able to do everything. But I think we have a big opportunity in front of us with the guys that we have in this huddle.”

Davis has emerged as the 49ers’ top target with 29 catches and leads the NFL with six touchdown receptions. With Houston forced to give more attention to Crabtree and San Francisco’s wideouts, the Texans tried to cover Davis with a linebacker and he was free to roam over the middle and create big plays.

The 49ers also have productive receiving weapons in veteran Isaac Bruce(notes) and youngster Josh Morgan(notes), who has averaged 15.5 yards on his 17 catches.

Running back Frank Gore(notes), who leads the team with 273 yards rushing, was San Francisco’s leader in receptions with 61 in 2006 and 53 in 2007.

The 49ers suddenly have the potential for a quick-strike offense built around first-round talents such as Smith, Davis and Crabtree all players who were among the first 10 selections in the years they were drafted.

“I think we have the full package,” Crabtree said. “We have the talent to be whatever we want to be. We just need to put things together and go out and execute.”

The early emergence of Crabtree seemed to help San Francisco’s execution on offense, opening the passing lanes for other receiving targets and giving the 49ers another option who can produce against man coverage.

Smith developed a quick rapport with Crabtree, who moved the chains three times with third-down receptions and displayed the ability to be the go-to guy at receiver the 49ers have been looking for since Terrell Owens(notes) left after the 2003 season.

“He has good burst off the line and demonstrated the ability to catch the ball when he’s in close confrontation with a defensive back,” Raye said. “I think it will help us on the edge, and the horizontal stretch of the defense will give us another outlet to be able to get the ball and make (opponents) defend the whole field.”

Hey cardinals sins, first off ur points are mute because you clearly are in fear because you are reading our stories,'i have never read any card-hype' secondly our team is being built for the long haul not a one year-mark rypenesque-cardinal luck fest. you barely beat houston at home you beat a giant team clearly hung over from the saints, but we still beat you 20-16. all of which leads to this, not only will we hang the nfc west banner this year, but we will continue to do so for at least the next five years!!!!!!! go 9ers

i like seeing cardinals fans on here. Shows that they're worried about what the best team in the division is doin. I don't think they're going to the rams sites and talkin smack. Anywho... tough game this week for sure. Our offense is definitely going to have to keep the chains moving and keep the ball away from peyton.

I like how all of a sudden Alex Smith is Peyton Manning status and is the answer to the '9ers woes. Keep crying 'frisco, he's still Alex Smith. lol

    GO CARDS!

I'll take the 12-13 points because the niners will win without the points. Alex Smith, 3 TD's second half and now Crabtree, 5 receptions 1st game playing, and a healthy Gore, look out West.

hey cardinal fans on here talking @#$%. I hope you know that we beat you 20-16. In YOUR house with a quarterback that can't throw the football further than ten yards and a 40 year old wide receiver lining up as our number one. Since then, not only have we gotten younger, but instantly better, and much more balanced than the team that you saw in week 1. Trust me, The crushing defense is still here and our Power running game isn't losing power. we are just adding a vertical element to keep defenses honest, which actually makes our running game more powerful. Think of that tonight when you go to sleep and try not to have nightmares of Frank Gore trucking the @#$% out of your whole defense. 6-0 in division this year is going to be a cake walk.

The San Francisco 49ers and the Indianapolis Colts will both be trying to pick up a WIN this coming Sunday.

NFL Week 8 Prediction is showing Indianapolis Colts -13 point favorites on the road against the San Francisco

I'm a fan that believes her 49ers team. I know that they will break all odds against them and come home with a WIN.

    Go 49ers!

All I had been hearing from niner fans after week one is how they were going to dominate this pathetic division, now all I hear is desperation. Good news!!, your rookie reciever thinks you have everything in place to make a come back! Since when are 1st game rookies supposed to speak about such things?.... "We have the dominate running team in the NFC West.... wait no we are going to air it out.....wait no crushing defense....oh wait no, cut the quarterback." ....Sounding worried....What about Singeltary, when does he go on the block?. You took AZ in the opener but face it the Cardinals are playing better football and have been for a while. Ya'll niners fans need to recognize, your team has potential but you are looking up for a reason. Tired of hearing you talk like the niners were last years champs and how you can't believe that you can be 2nd to AZ. You should hope your team has more respect than you fans or your just gonna keep on slip'n. AZ is 4-Real, playing solid ball with the best in the league .ESPN SUCKS!!! GO RED!!

niners have all the pieces but are not in place. Aldx Smith can try to put the pieces together. HE will hill Gore in the running game because @#$% Hill can through deep at all and all of the defenders are playing tight cause of his short passes. Smith can through deeper hopefully. LEts go NINER$ 4 life

The 49ers pick a bad time to be disorganized as a team, especially with their suspect offense. The defense is good, but it can't carry them if the offense hurts them. If a team is going to engage a top-notch team like the Colts, they have better come prepared, otherwise, they're going to get wiped out. Right now, the 49ers are looking up at the Cardinals, who've reclaimed the lead in the NFC West. the 49ers can turn things around, but not this weekend.

Yes, when somethings not working, it's time to make some changes. I want to see some aerial bombs.

I think we should wait a few games after the Colts game before we make any criticisms.

Hopefully Alex has had time to mature and develop his reading of the defenses. There are enough weapons on offense to have a consistantly score 20+ points a game. That should hold on to the ball and give the defense time to rest making the team better in all phases.

With the offensive line beat up, quick passing seems to be at the top of the menu. Not at all a bad thing though, look back to the Joe Montana days, 5 yard slants all day! To me that means less sacks and a very busy chain gang, in turn, Gore will then have more room to run. This is the brand of Offense I think most Niner fans are wanting to see.

Pass to Run= Balanced offense, time of possession, scoring drives, WINS.
Run to Pass= Predictability, 3 and outs, very low scoring, Losses.

I'm glad that Singletary finally realizes that we need to open up our offense. We have the weapons and now that we have a half decent arm at QB hopefully we will improve. The game at Indy is an automatic loss but i'm interested in seeing how we do for the rest of the season now that we're FINALLY changing our offensive approach. GO NINERS!!!
