Smith now 49ers starting quarterback
SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP)—Alex Smith is getting a big chance to resurrect his career. All but forgotten, the former No. 1 overall pick is the San Francisco 49ers’ new starting quarterback—again.
“I don’t know if I’d say surprised. I don’t know if I was anticipating it, either,” Smith said Monday after getting the news from coach Mike Singletary. “It’s the opportunity I’ve been waiting for; happy.”
Singletary made the announcement Monday after also sitting down with Shaun Hill(notes), who was benched after the first half of the Niners’ a 24-21 loss at Houston on Sunday.
Smith, who hadn’t played in nearly two years, came in and gave the offense a much-needed jolt of energy and efficiency, and he nearly led San Francisco (3-3) back from a 21-0 deficit.
“As far as will Shaun Hill be back and all this other stuff, we’re not going to be a flavor-of-the-month kind of thing where, ‘Let’s see, this guy will be this week, this guy will be next week,”’ Singletary said. “I wanted to make the decision based upon who I feel gives us the best chance to win.”
Smith completed his first six passes and finished 15 of 22 for 206 yards and three touchdown passes to tight end Vernon Davis(notes). Davis is the first 49er since Terrell Owens(notes) in 2001 to have three TD catches in a game.
The 49ers play at Indianapolis on Sunday, coincidentally the same team Smith debuted against in 2005. This will be his first start since Nov. 12, 2007.
“I think right now overall Alex Smith really just kind of fit the bill in terms of doing the things that we need to get done,” Singletary said.
Smith, the No. 1 draft pick out of Utah in 2005, missed all of last season after reinjuring his surgically repaired throwing shoulder three days before the season opener. He was set to be the backup to J.T. O’Sullivan(notes).
When this season began, Singletary decided Hill was the best man behind center for San Francisco, a franchise desperate to end a streak of six straight losing seasons.
The 25-year-old Smith has shown signs in practice of being more than ready to handle this role. It was Smith who spent several days during the recent bye week working with receiver and top draft pick Michael Crabtree(notes) to get him up to speed on the offense before his debut against the Texans. Crabtree, who finally signed his six-year deal Oct. 7, had five catches in an impressive first game.
Singletary, who insisted his decision wasn’t “premeditated,” sensed a positive vibe from everybody—save maybe for Hill—with Smith’s calm, confidence presence on the field. Not that Singletary didn’t have a feeling Smith could take charge of his unit and lead the team again after all he’s been through.
Singletary has seen Smith’s strides in recent months.
“Let him develop that hunger, let him get excited, ‘Well if I get an opportunity again.’ Let him develop some confidence, ‘I think I can do that,”’ Singletary said of the time Smith needed to evolve. “Rather than just putting him in at the beginning of the season and if you don’t have success right away, then it’s, ‘Same old Alex.’ I don’t think it’s the same old Alex. I think Alex has matured, I think he’s grown and I think he’s ready to play. We’re going to find out. We’ll find out next week.”
Not that Smith needed any more motivation: He knew he’d better take advantage if he ever got another opportunity. He knows he’s done more to earn his spot this time around than as a rookie.
He doesn’t plan to change now. And he no longer thinks about his shoulder.
“I’ve been out for two years now. I don’t know if I was getting any hungrier,” Smith said. “I’ve kind of been waiting. It’s been frustrating and I’ve got a chance to get back out there and make the most of it.”
Hill began the season as a starter for the first time in his eight-year NFL career and led the 49ers to a 3-1 start. He lost his job Monday a year to the day after Singletary benched O’Sullivan in favor of Hill during the coach’s debut against the Seahawks.
Hill struggled in the first half Sunday, when San Francisco had only 50 total yards and he was 6 of 11 for 45 yards.
“It’s frustrating. It’s upsetting,” Hill said. “It’s not going to keep me down. Nothing ever has, nothing ever will. It’s the same thing he went through and it didn’t hold him down, either.”
Texans defensive end Mario Williams(notes) said he didn’t know who Smith was when the QB came out to start the second half. That’s how far he had fallen off the NFL radar.
“When I look at Alex, I really didn’t know what we were going to get when he went in,” Singletary said. “I was hoping we’d get what we’ve seen out here in practice, and that’s what we got. I was excited to see that, the excitement and the enthusiasm on the sideline, the excitement and enthusiasm on the defensive side of the ball, the receivers, the running backs, everybody.”

With that said I hope Alex doesn't always lock in on Crabs as his target and instead just looks at his options or reads and sees what options are available. If its Crabs then throw it to him and I'm sure he'll take it to the house before the season is over but for now just focus on moving the chains!!
Alex I have faith in you this time. The first time around it seemed like too much was placed on him without being given any tools to work with!! This time hopefully he has something to work with.... However, one thing that hasn't changed is the O-LINE!!
Man somehow SF's gotta do better in protecting the QB and opening holes for Gore!!!!! Someone earlier said it.... why not WRAGGE!!

One mistake is all it takes to lose in the NFL
Smith is not the answer
Offensive Coordinator is terrible, 3 winning seasons out of 12
Offensive Line is swiss cheese
Pass Rusher is not anywhere on this team
These are GLARING concerns....

Smith's problem has always been mental (possibly brought on by being throw to the wolves as a rook, other than David Carr I've never seen a QB get hit so much his first couple of years). In the past he's had a tendency to make bad passing decisions and put the ball on the turf.
He looked real sharp in the game last Sunday, but I'm not sold on whether his success came from the Texan D loosening up a bit having a big lead, the Texan D not scheming for the spread offense they set Smith up in, or that he's better than Hill. In any case, we have to start Smith, Coach Singletary doesn't have a choice. The guy came in and threw three TD's (all to Vernon...) and Hill hasn't thrown one last week or in the first half.
The real problem is the defense specifically the secondary... Owen Daniels shredding us for 100yds and 2 Td's at half? Roddy White is one thing but we have to be able to cover a tight end. Alarming to say the least.
Big Mike, we got a little bit of pressure on Schaub and got to him a bit but he's a Pro Bowl type guy, our secondary has got to take care of business. Crappy play calling in the first half and no coverage lost us that game.

I was so impressed by the velocity of Smiths throws. I never saw him just let it fly like this. And how about the command he showed? I was simply floored by this perfrmance and really wana know why they didn't turn to him last week vs ATL. Alex is just 25 years old and sunday may be the turning point of his career. I sure hope so.

go get your bet back! i will be at that game telling your old QB to go back and back groceries! you aint getting no wins from us this year, tweedy bird!

He missed Gore on the sidelines all alone (Gore was flapping and waving his arms like crazy but Smith didn't see it at all!) , that would have gone for 20+ yards INSTEAD Smith threw into a crowd of Texans, there were 4-5 Texans right where he threw the ball!!!! TERRIBLE TERRIBLE
Smith will stink it up...Niners season is done folks, give it up....
Until they get a decent:
Offensive Coordinator: Raye sucks
Offensive Line: Its swiss cheese
Pass Rusher: there is none
There is a long season left and these 3 glaring problems still exhist, on top of that the schedule is getting tougher....
I hope to see Nate Davis before long...

Alex Smith can throw the ball, unfortunately, he likes to throw the ball whether a player is covered or if the player has on a different jersey. I know what he can do when you allow him to throw, but he doesn't have the discipline to do it over the course of an entire game. Shaun might not have the dynamic abilities to play QB, but he's not going to kill you by fumbling, throwing interceptions, or throwing downfield on 3rd and short, when the underguy is open for an easy first down.
Besides, Singletary likes running the ball and using standard sets, which wouldn't play towards Alex Smith's abilities. Basically, Singletary has to change who he is in order to accomodate the new quarterback. Sounds like the Niners (and Singletary) are still searching for an identity.

Don't Fret ..49er/Hill Fan... Indy will crunch Smith, and Hill will be back out there leading the team down the field like he did before.
Like he did against the Seattle SeaGals, and the Lambs, like he did in Minnesota, and yes, sorry Tonya my Luv... Like He Did in Da ZONA..! (btw all super tough away venues!)
Folks, least not forget the Sunday night game in Arizona last year. Where Hill did an end around to the left side, got hit by three huge Zona defenders (Helmit Ripped Off Of Head), and still lunged four extra yards for the first down.
If I see the ball slip outta Smith's hand (while going back to pass) one more time.. EVER.. I'm throwing my boot threw the television..!
Hill's My Guy..!
