49ers offense looks to get on track

  • Print

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP)—Frank Gore(notes) has a straightforward offensive strategy: make positive yards every time.

That’s what the running back regularly reminds his San Francisco 49ers teammates about—small gains are better than no gains or negatives.

“We’re getting better,” Gore said Wednesday. “Like I keep telling my guys, ‘We’ve got to get positive yards every time we run the ball.”’

Sounds simple enough, yet the 49ers have been inconsistent on offense all season and are still trying to find that identity repeatedly mentioned by coach Mike Singletary since the start of training camp. He is standing by coordinator Jimmy Raye, strong running game or not, spread offense or not, criticism or not.

The Niners (3-4) know they need to get the offense back on track in this Sunday’s home game against the Tennessee Titans (1-6), who snapped an eight-game losing streak by beating Jacksonville last week.

“We will,” Gore said. “As long as we do our job and everybody’s on the same page, we’re going to be a good offense.”

It hasn’t helped San Francisco’s cause that the offensive line has changed so much. Right tackle Tony Pashos(notes) went on injured reserve last week with a broken left shoulder blade, and left tackle Joe Staley(notes) is sidelined for six weeks with a sprained right knee that he hurt in last Sunday’s loss at Indianapolis. Staley will miss the first game of his career.

“We’re not down at all,” said tight end Vernon Davis(notes), who has been a big bright spot with 32 receptions and an NFL-leading seven touchdown catches. “We’re just looking forward, trying to keep our confidence. We know we have a championship team.”

While San Francisco has had success in the spread offense the past two weeks, Singletary isn’t ready to make it his primary attack and put that kind of pressure on quarterback Alex Smith considering the former No. 1 draft pick has been back as the starter for only one game. He took over for the demoted Shaun Hill(notes) after halftime at Houston on Oct. 25.

San Francisco has lost three straight and is taking some heat about its offensive plan. Singletary is still focused on running the ball, but also wants more balance—and Smith has shown he can effectively throw the ball. The 49ers produced only 297 yards in a 24-21 loss to the Texans, then just 295 in an 18-14 defeat by the Colts.

Raye is the team’s seventh offensive coordinator in as many years, and Singletary insists it will still take time for him to get accustomed to just what he can expect from his players in various situations over the course of a game.

“I 150 percent back what he’s doing, absolutely,” Singletary said. “There’s not one iota that I’m wavering here or there, whatever. Jimmy knows there are some things going forward that he has to learn about our players, what they can and cannot do.”

The team passed on 36 of its 54 offensive plays against the Colts. A three-receiver formation worked well as the Niners tried to rally back from a 21-0 deficit at Houston, but late in the game last week it was primarily Isaac Bruce(notes) and rookie Michael Crabtree(notes) as the lone wideouts on the field.

San Francisco finished with 113 rushing yards, better than the 59 it gained against Houston.

“When you’re lopsided either way, I think it makes it easier on (the defense),” Smith said.

Singletary certainly believes in his personnel, with Smith, Gore and Davis leading the way—and top draft pick Crabtree making strides each week after missing 71 days during his contract impasse that ended Oct. 7.

Singletary never said a turnaround would happen overnight. He points to small improvements each game and finds plenty of encouraging signs.

Smith is “ahead of schedule” according to Singletary, and the coaches will keep adding to his offensive load as he gains more experience.

Smith isn’t picky about running or throwing the ball.

“Winning,” he said when asked what he favors. “Whatever it is, whether it’s Frank running for a bunch of yards, or us throwing for a bunch of yards or both. In the end, that is what is going to change things around here.”

Smith’s teammates have all the faith in him he can get this offense going and get the Niners back to winning.

“Right now we’re doing everything we can to get our playmakers the ball,” Davis said. “We’ve just got to take advantage of it.”

How are some people already calling for a qb change? Smith looks to be on the up n up and Nate Davis is not ready. We don't want to happen to him what happened to Smith. I think everyone is in agreement that the O needs to change it up. That's starting to become the most irritating thing to me. The team begins to show flashes and then our playcalling stalls it. I do agree with coach Sing that the team is improving. I'm hoping it's obvious to everyone. This team would not have hung with Minn or Indy these past years. And let me echo what I'm reading and hearing from other Niner fans: CHANGE IT UP JIMMY!

Frank Gore is right. Execute the game plan to perfection and all is well again in Niners land. This team has the 2nd ranked run defense and a 30th ranked run offense. This team has an identity, but a poor ability to execute on both sides of the ball. Most fans can see the real potential for success from this team, but can also see a young ball club that makes mental errors at critical periods. Look at the Minnesota game...they let that one get away with: 03 seconds left.

If they execute on offense in that game and close out the game by running the ball, Brett Favre never gets a chance to take the field. Also against the Colts, if Shawntee Spencer or Deshon Goldson plays pass on the back 7 like they are suppose to they win that game possibly. The team is young, but headed in the right direction.

No excuses for Jimmy Raye. Jimmy hasn't lived up to his,” Everything flows through #21!" comments that he was preaching in August. Jimmy Raye's first option needs to be Frank Gore, but Frank Gore must also stay healthy. In order for Frank Gore and Alex Smith to stay healthy the offensive line must become viable again. Pasoh is out. Staley is down. That doesn't bode well for a run first offense, but then again this gives Adam Snyder and Barry Sims the chance to become viable again.

This team is physical with an F, but it needs to win 7 out of the next 9 games to become winners with a W!

    GO NINERS!

    Return to champions!

Watched a replay of the Indy-S.F. game last night.

There were a few plays Alex made that made me take notice: maybe he CAN be a quality starting QB in the NFL. One in the 3rd qtr, he was rushed, backed away, spun and threw a reception...very impressive.

His accuracy was very good too.

Things I see need improving: more shots taken down field for more than 25 yards are lacking. I don't care if we miss 3 or 4, throw 3 or 4 more. Gotta get that average yards per game total higher. Completing 20 passes for 200 yards ain't going to cut it.

Gore made some fine catches, and I think that hit he made on Hagler when Hagler was trying to tackle him put Hagler out for the season....remember how Tom Rathman would level DB's and safeties catching swing passes out of the backfield? Well, Gore fits that bill, and it gives him room to break long runs....I'd like to see 3 or 4 of those, please.

Throw on first down, 5 or 6 yards, to get us in short second down situations....then run it.

Make sure we get Crabtree past the first down marker on his routes, have him run some 'come back" patterns to set up the long out routes.

This is not up to Alex, btw: The offensive play calling must improve.

But I admit: Alex showed me something I missed the first time: I grade him at B+ for the Indy game.

Alex has showed a lot in the games he played so far. The coaches need to adjust to his skills and let him be a throwing QB. Let him do what he knows and everything else will open up! It’s really that easy!!
    GO 9ers!!!

[Singletary never said a turnaround would happen overnight. He points to small improvements each game and finds plenty of encouraging signs.] Huh? What?

He promised this team would make the playoffs every year, Janie: where the heck were you? How did my 9ers get stuck with this woman covering us for AP?

The only thing we lack is a quality starting QB. Will Smith become the talent Nolan thought when he made him the number 1 pick? Nolan has a knack for picking great defensive players...offense? Not so much. Alex had two seasons of starting to show it: he did not.

Example: much is made of the 49ers weak O-line protection. Yet, Aaron Rodgers of G.B gets creamed every game, yet still puts up excellent stats. Smith has to start utilizing his mobility and ability to throw on the run, avoid the pressure, take the burden of his now injured O-line, and find a way to succeed. The contrast will be on exhibit when we play G.B. Now it's up to Alex to improve and make me a liar. I think Alex is more mobile than Aaron, now USE it!! Don't be afraid to run for 5-6 yards when your protection breaks down, and fersrissakes, THROW IT AWAY instead of taking sacks!!

Since we have no choice, all I can do is hope he amazes and surprises me, and shows me something he never has before: the grit and determination to lead us to wins in the 4th quarter.

That drive against the Colts right before the half? Very promising. Let's see if he can expand on that.....

I didn't realize we have two #1 picks next year. With the talent Vernon Davis is now demonstrating (like I thought he would if given the opportunity Martz never gave him), with Crabtree looking very decent considering his lack of practice and playing time, with Gore still a threat, and with Coffee available out of the backfield as a fourth receiver, if Smith doesn't show some spark behind center the next two or three games (like 2 or 3 wins), I say bench him, start Nate Davis, see what he has....and get ready to use one of those #1 picks to get Sam Bradford, if he's available. Then cut Hill and Smith.

Best case scenario if Smith fails (again?) We trade him with a number 2 and number 3 pick to Cleveland for Brady Quinn. Or trade same for Troy Smith of Baltimore.

Then use those two #1 picks on the OL lineman, some very good ones available next draft. Oklahoma's tackle looks killer.

Sorry, I hope like heck Alex does well...and we can use all our draft picks to strengthen the O-line and get another deep threat (retire Isaac, retire now....)

Hint: don't be real surprised if the 49ers trade away one of those picks for two or three lower ones...signing two number ones is a TON of cash....and the Yorks seem like fools paying Bruce and Clements and Smith so much for so little results....go to "roster" on Rival's (Yahoo) "team" above, be amazed at how much the Yorks spend on some of these players...then go look at what Baltimore pays their roster, their starters....amazing. Hill makes as much as Flacco.....

Should've kept Martz...at least we can rely on him for calling a good passing offense, cuz the running game can't carry the offense without a decent O-line.

good call warren w. problem i have is when the dumbasses drafted smith, who did the scouting? he is clearly a good quarterback, he just needs to work in the spread offense that he excelled at in high school and college. this nickel and dime running game which amounts to less than three yards a carry weekens the team; both offensively and defensively. i'm not buying this sales pitch on jimmy raye....either way, niners finish 10-6

We need to use what we have right now and go spread offense. Alex has been great in that set and the receivers have been open. Bruce,Crabtree,& Morgan with Davis in a slot or at TE is a dangerous set. they could not cover it in Houston so why not go back to it. That will open holes for Gore to keep the Defense respecting the run. Singletary has to get away from that basic I formation its killing us more than helping us, we just do not have the O-line for it. Lets use what we got.

Changing offensive coordinators every year has been our team's biggest issue. Norv Turner was the best coordinator we had, Alex Smith really started to develop into a good QB under him then he went to San Diego. We need an offensive line that will protect and pass block for our guys, and yet we still struggle on offense. This year will show some hope, but we are still several pieces away from being a contender. O-linemen, an animal at D-end to compliment Justin Smith, and another stud receiver to compliment Crabtree will put us to the next step! Go Niners.

Use the spread with more screens and short dumps to Gore. Get Crabtree and Davis more involved. Smith... do some of that quarterback sh*t!
